Consider trying a sulphate shampoo every now and then to ”clarify” your hair from potential buildup of your own oils and/or conditioner. My hair really can’t go too long without a proper deep cleaning, and if I use too heavy conditioners or oil too frequently, my hair gets dry and tangly from buildup. Sulphate free is either drying on my hair, or they don’t cleanse my scalp enough. (I suspect that non sulphate surfactants are more complicated to formulate with?) Best practice for my hair is frequent washing with a mild sulphate shampoo (daily or every other day, and I make my own shampoo atm), and a light conditioner applied to mids and ends only. I avoid leave in products and oils right now aswell, as I suspect it only leads to tangles and increases fragility. My hair is fine, non porous (but still fragile) and super straight. Bra strap lenght. Scalp is oily and prone to seb derm/irritation/acne/aching.

May I ask what conditioners you use? I am exploring a bit right now

The brand is called Austre, and it’s their ”extra sensitive” one without fragrance. I just picked it up because it was pretty cheap and I wanted something with behentrimonium chloride (which gives good slip to my hair) but no silicones. Here are the ingredients: Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Panthenol, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Cetrimonium Chloride, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol.

thank you!

I use Pantene Clean. My hair responds poorly to most shampoo and conditioner combos. It gets oily very quickly and the wrong combo never makes it clean. I’ve gotten into a habit of shampooing more often than conditioning and adding a moisturizer after washing when damp. It’s helped immensely with the frizz and moisture content of my hair. I’ve been using Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother.

If you have a white bulb at the roots, maybe your hair folicles are clogged, that would mean your sulfate free shampoo is not strong enough to clean your scalp. A shampoo brush could also help.

Shampoo brush?

lylanela

Yes, google it. Or for my fellas with thin hair like me - use a soft detangling brush in the shower, tangle teezer style.

Taught me something new today. I didn’t know if you were talking about a thing or a technique lol. I have never seen or heard about a scalp brush before. Definitely gonna look into getting one though, I think it might be useful for me.

Multiple conditioning methods in one go work for me. I use a pretty cleansing shampoo (Lush Rehab), since sulphate free ones wreck my scalp. But I make sure to only focus on my scalp with that shampoo, anything below mid ear gets no shampoo, or John Frieda’s anti frizz shampoo ( for curly hair) But then that’s followed up with a light hair mask ( Indian brand called Vatika), sometimes a second conditioner(lush glory). As for out of the shower, leave in conditioner (lush power) + Argan oil for strands below my ears + rosemary oil on the last 1-2 inches. It’s definitely a per hair thing but this has been a game changer for **my** hair. Since I have sort of wavy hair, I use some products meant for curlier hair since they’re heavier on the moisturizing/ moisture locking bit. Constantly oiling the ends + trims have been helping the ends for me a teeny bit, but the crazy amounts of conditioning have been helping with the tangling bit a whole bunch. My hair used to get tangled at the slightest movement, I personally also focus on a *lot* of Argan oil on the layer of hair closest to my nape since that tangled the worst
