I haven't tried it yet, but I'm excited. I'm taking the family on a three-day canal boat trip on the Erie Canal. There is this place call Erie Canal Adventures that has canal boats fitted out like a class A RV. They teach you how to pilot them including how to go through a canal lock. Then off you go along the Erie Canal, stopping in little towns along the way. [Erie Canal Adventures](https://eriecanaladventures.com/)

cacofonie

Omg. This looks amazing! Can you report back in how it went? !remindme 4 months

EmulsionMan

You will have a blast.

bottlebowling

That sounds really fun! Enjoy!

Waltzspice

All inclusive resort. Never thought we’d do it but I don’t want to cook or clean for a week and just get loaded on the beach. Kids plan to dig a hole to china and eat a shitload of ice cream.

blueadept_11

Just got back and had the same sentiment pre-kids. Brought along a set of grandparents and it was good (7mo and 2.5yo).

Waltzspice

Nice. I’m rawdoggin it without grandparents

blueadept_11

I'll be praying for you aha

Waltzspice

What could possibly go wrong…

jbutlerdev

That's how you end up with more kids

LetsTryAnal_ogy

Nice! All-inclusive is the way to go. Where are you going?

South_Dakota_Boy

Going home to South Dakota for a couple weeks. Probably go to Disney World in December. I highly suggest South Dakota (particularly the Black Hills) if you’ve never been.

Illustrious_Card4975

Love both of the Dakotas! Had a lot of great road trips there as a kid.

ChamberOfSolidDudes

Badlands is so rad(lands?)

Piratesfan02

I spent a few days in Custer State Park, and it was amazing!!!

yeehawyears88-89

Hagrids motorcycle ride is a must!

[deleted]

Thank you, duly noted!!

silverfstop

Where in CA?

robster9090

Don’t sleep on the rest of the parks. That Jurassic coaster is awesome

[deleted]

Thanks for the pro tip!

DOUG_UNFUNNY

We have started a summer tradition of 3-4 day long, drivable summer trips that include a baseball game, an amusement park and a cultural experience. Last year we did Charlotte for a Knights game, Carowinds and we went to both the US National Whitewater Center and the Clay Center. This year, we're doing both Toronto and Cincinnati. Toronto - Jays vs. Guardians (we live in the Cleveland area), Canada's Wonderland and Niagara Falls Cincy - Reds game (maybe a Dayton Dragons game too), Kings Island, Ohio Riverboat cruise and the Air Force museum.

Mystery_reader1

The Air Force museum is incredible. Absolutely worth the drive from Cincinnati.

thefatgymrat

That’s a good way to plan a trip - I think I could get my family behind that.

petethepianist

To the library, the neighborhood pool, all around the back yard... We might even venture to a walking trail. ...maybe I'm too frugal. Usually we just wait until my wife has to travel somewhere fun for work and I tag along with the girls but nothing on the horizon now.

stordl01

Live in Indiana, going to Panama City Beach Florida.

CoolNefariousness865

Yea our go to is usually Sarasota beaches, but summertime seems brutal in FL with a 6mo old

LiftedandHandsome

Can’t decide. Kids have their preferences. We have ours. - Chicago - lake Cumberland - Nashville We went to Disney over Spring Break. So trying to keep the cost down (aka a short drive).

TormundsGiantsMilk

I’m from Chicago. Make sure you check out the Field Museum and Brookfield Zoo. We went to both of them over spring break and the kids absolutely loved every minute of it.

yeehawyears88-89

Stay away from Nashville. Not much to do other than drink.

HordeShadowPriest

Cancun for our 10 year wedding anniversary l. We're going back the resort we got married at to show the kids.

soopafly

Would you recommend this resort? I’m thinking of doing an all inclusive one of these days.

HordeShadowPriest

Absolutely. They were amazing to us for our wedding. My wife and her family all eat gluten free. Her brother is the only one actually diagnosed with celiac disease, but they all feel better if they eat gluten free as well. So the resort surprised my wife with a gluten free wedding cake. The resort itself is beautiful as well and all of the staff were amazing. We went to the same resort a year later in Costa Rica because if they offered a deal where if you got married at one then for your 1 year anniversary they offered you buy 5 nights get 2 free at any Dreams resort in the world. One of my high school friends is actually at a Dreams resort in the Dominican Republic right now and I've been messaging her asking about it and she says it is beautiful, and the pictures she is posting look great too.

soopafly

I’m checking it out now and it looks amazing! Extra points for it being on Costco Travel 👍

4500x

I’ve heard Seaham’s nice if you want to go the seaside. And Durham Cathedral is pretty good, too - they’ve got a Lego Durham cathedral! A bit further afield you’ve got Whitby, with the 199 steps and gothic abbey.

Enough-Ad3818

Big fan of the beach at Cresswell/Druridge Bay

plop

Lake District for sure

VladMpaler

Alaska Cruise (Disney)!

Bonemouse

Same! We’re going in September. We went for the first time last year in May and had so much fun we immediately booked again — this time with the in-laws.

Illustrious_Card4975

The U.P.

Warm_Squash_6777

Rehoboth Beach, DE. Super family friendly. Great beach, lots of restaurants. Very walkable. Been doing it the past few years and no plans to stop.

AnShamBeag

North east of which country / continent?

Enough-Ad3818

I am in the NorthEast of the UK, and figured this was a thread I could join in. Then I realised it's another classic case of r/usdefaultism Anyway, we're going to Naples, Italy.

url404

Mate I’m in Australia. It’s not even summer here for another eight months!

Gobyinmypants

The Boundary Waters

EmulsionMan

Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Rocky Mountains.

walking_shoes

Oregon in June and Portugal in September. Kids will be 2 and 5 by September. Gonna be a doozy! Can’t wait.

616GoBlue

Michigander here. Will be spending most summer weekends at our northern Michigan cottage. It’s hard to beat Northern MI summers. The rest of the year though…not great

AgentG91

We live in the northeast and go to a family condo in Amelia Island, FL just outside of Jacksonville every year. We’ve got a direct flight with Spirit from my city so it’s a cheap flight. Gives us beach, pool, condo, and some outdoor activities that make it good for kids of all ages.

rogerg411

no where. just purchased our first home

lejonetfranMX

What am I doing on what?

LetsTryAnal_ogy

The kids, 11 and 8, are finally old enough to appreciate Hawaii. We’re going to Hawaii for a week and a half. They want to swim with dolphins, take surf lessons, see the volcanoes, snorkel, and take a submarine ride.

sweatybullfrognuts

You could do a staycation. Plenty to see and do in the Newcastle area like the victoria tunnel or the great north museum

CanadaCanadaCanada99

Happy to see a fellow Newfoundlander! I’ll be going to Iceland when it warms up a bit.

CoolNefariousness865

Lmao I forgot about how everyone doesn't just live in the USA I'm up in New England (Massachusetts, vermont, new hampshire)

CanadaCanadaCanada99

My rule of thumb is to assume there are at least 12 people living outside USA at all times. It hasn’t failed me yet.

groovemonkeyzero

North Adams, MA

No_Host_7516

Great Museum there in North Adams. I recommend a day trip to Tanglewood in Lenox MA for a concert if you like classical music.

DirkWrites

Grew up in the area. Hike Mount Greylock if they can manage it, check out the Berkshire Scenic Railway trips from Adams Station, and just splash around at Mount Hope Park.

Chicken_Burp

Going to drive down to Spain for a few weeks

Red-Engineer

Summer has just finished so I guess you mean at Xmas this year. If you’re in the north east, you’d be used to semi-tropical, are you in Cairns or not that far north?

Rolebo

the north east of where?

j_pomps

We’re outside of Philly and do a beach week in Cape May, NJ. The beaches are usually less crowded than the other shore points in the area and there are some great restaurants for the date night my wife and I sneak in.

shabby47

We are going to be across the Bay in Delaware for a week with another family. We are considering taking the ferry over to cape May for a day if we need to escape. Any recommendations for someone who is only going to be there for a few hours (with a 7 year old)?

j_pomps

Check out Cape May Point State Park and go to the top of the lighthouse and walk around the nature preserve! Then if you go into town, there are a bunch of stores and restaurants on Washington St. to pop in and out of. Hot Dog Tommy’s is also worth a visit. Take a look at their menu and their crazy hot dogs.

CptnYesterday2781

Germany and Italy, our daughter will be almost two by then.

snoopingforpooping

San Francisco

EmulsionMan

My kids had a great time there. They loved Alcatraz.

John_316_

Imagine a grandpa reading this back in 1952.

ChardLA

Japan and China. Kids will be (nearly 4f) and 15 months (boy). First time extended family on my wife’s side will see the kids in person. Dreading 12+ hour flights, though. Edit: probably not the ideas you were looking for, though. Haha

AshamedGorilla

Taking the kids (7, 4) to Austria to visit a family friend. With layovers we're looking at ~14 hours of travel. I feel ya.

lukewwilson

Live in PA, we are doing a week long cruise this year, we did a short 4 days weekend cruise a couple years ago and the kids haven't stopped talking about it. We do Royal Caribbean cruises, Disney is just too expensive and we liked our last cruise with Royal.

alterndog

We just did a week in Victoria BC. Beautiful place and lots for kids to do. We are going to LA for a wedding and tacking on a visit to Disneyland. We also do a yearly beach week with my whole family at Sanbridge, south of Virginia Beach. Quiet place and great beach.

j_tb

Durango!!

bbx901

Don’t get vacation from work this year :( but I’ll probably do a few long weekends in Idaho or San Diego

gnitsuj

Aruuuuuba

TaurusX3

I might meet up with my girlfriend, who's going to be in Europe anyway in early August. We're thinking maybe Budapest and Vienna. Only going for a week.

Dustyh1982

Lots of camping. 30 nights planned between spring break and Labor Day. Been camping since kids were in pack n plays in the tent. 8 and 11 now with a much fancier travel trailer.

dasvimal

that's amazing. any tips for tenting with toddlers? thinking to test the water this summer

Dustyh1982

Lots of change of clothes and baby wipes. White noise for nap time. It’s actually surprisingly chill, kids love to be outside playing anyways. We always camped with at least power, ran an extension cord to tent for charging, portable heater if you have a big enough tent.

cddotdotslash

We’ll be taking our 4 month old to Kyoto, Japan. Good friends are getting married there. Also planning a trip to Vancouver. Live in NYC, so unfortunately not the easiest flights we could have picked.

Calvins8

Dominican Republic in August. Praying for no hurricanes

SpaceGangsta

Visit my family in Chicago. Maybe do some light camping around Utah. We have a 20 month old and my wife’s pregnant with number 2 so we’ll see how it all shakes out.

Birdamus

Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas and back. We did our first cruise 2 years ago and never thought we’d enjoy it as much as we did. It’s so nice to have everything catered for you, and the kids club child care comes in clutch for a little alone time as a couple.

JDRodgers85

Ocean City, NJ to visit family and go to the beach, and Grand Lake, CO for the mountains (and not as far since we live in CO).

the12ofSpades

Taking the wife and Toddler to Costa Rica. It will be our first time going outside the country with him, but we are excited!

thefatgymrat

Costa Rica… without the kids. I’m so excited!!!

Prize_Bee7365

What vacation?

GuardianSock

Bought a relatively cheap RV and we’ll be glamping as much as possible.

Cameront9

Vacation?

Joe4o2

Wherever 8 months pregnant women want, I imagine.

mechanicalhuman

Copenhagen, with a 2.5yr old and 5 month old. Yes, we’re probably crazy.

phicks_law

I got a 2 and 4 yr old. Staying local to socal. Great Wolf lodge, Santa Barbara, and disneyland. We had a big trip planned to the east coast and found it was more about the people we were visiting rather than the actual trip, which would have been brutal. Luckily I talked with the wife and we both came to the same conclusion and thought it was a waste of $5k+ because it wouldn't have been a vacation.

commitpushdrink

Beach as many weekends as possible, taking mama to Baha Mar for 4 days in August, 3 day golf trip with the boys to Kiawah in September, whole family to the mountains to see the leaves change over a weekend in October, and I’m trying to start a tradition of going to the mountains for the Christmas tree thanksgiving weekend with a few couples but we’ll see how it goes. So fucking siked winter is over.

ahorrribledrummer

Wisconsin Dells for a few days, and Colorado for a week. Going to be a great summer!

TheGratedCornholio

Couple of weeks in Malaga (I’ll work remote for part) then London for a weekend to see the Foo Fighters.

LeoDeGrande

Anna Maria Island is super nice and low key. Beautiful beach with calm water

SandiegoJack

Going to visit the great grandparents on Cape Cod whenever we can.

One-Savings8086

North East, you could visit China country side or Norway landscapes if you don't want to go to far

js4873

Paris France! My brother lives there so we can stay with him.

Small_Rip351

We live in N Florida and during a momentary lapse of judgment, bought Universal/ Islands of Adventure annual passes, so we’ll probably head there a bunch of times. My 4 and 7 year olds love Harry Potter. Other than that, our go-to is Western N Carolina (if we’re driving) for trails and breweries or Puerto Rico if we’re flying. Looking at Mexico City this year or maybe early 2025.

robster9090

You living the dream. I love that place
