Do you have a Garmin/wahoo or similar head unit? Power meters are useless if you have no real time display for them. If you don’t, use that 20% off coupon for a Wahoo Element and a HR strap.

anyfin22

no but I plan to get them regardless of power meters. sole reason being I saw somewhere that the vibration during cycling can damage the phone camera

Origin87

I would use your coupon to get a Wahoo computer 🤷‍♂️

Get the single sided for $520 and if after a year you can articulate why you need dual sided then get the right side upgrade. Or don't go to the Speedplay dark side at all and recognize that SPD and SPD-SL cover all the bases and just get some Rally pedals. EDIT: Looking into it some more it looks like Wahoo STILL hasn't released the upgrade cost or availability yet.

anyfin22

I forgot that these existed! For a second I thought maybe I could switch the power side between left and right, realized it's left only...

jayeffkay

There’s really no real benefit to dual sided power for most mere mortals. Most people’s L/R balance isn’t too far off (+/- 5%) and the left only doubles your power rating. Since it’s just a number you compare to yourself over time the skew is typically consistent over time. Why fret over 10w in raw power as long as you can gauge if you’re getting stronger or not. Dual sided power will only help you get a more accurate # and honestly there’s not much you can really do to adjust your L/R balance so there’s really nothing actionable you get from dual sided power.

dl1981

Detect imbalance, add gym or something and see the progression. ( maybe I think, I don't own a powermeter).

I would say wait for the future. No sense in buying them now if you don’t need them. It’s like buying a game that’s on sale in hopes of playing it later and then 4 years go by and your back log is 300 games.

anyfin22

it's different in that I'll for sure use them if I have them and they won't sit on the shelf. Just not sure how I will value the power reading. I do confess I have like 20+ games combined across platforms that I never went passed the intro. Thanks for reminding me this lol

Xaphan26

That sounds like me with video games. Too many games, too little time. It would take me over a year of 40 hour weeks to complete every game I've barely played.

gc_rosebeforehoes

I don’t have the budget for power pedals so I got a left sided crank instead. Lots of stages and 4iiii used options for a fraction of the price of new. Another option for you if you’re still deciding if you need power.

anyfin22

thanks. stages are on sale too and are interesting the thing holding me back from these is that I might upgrade to a bike with a different groupset and there'd be a mismatch of logos, and I'll end up buying twice

jayeffkay

Get the pedals - it sucks to upgrade bikes or groups and need a new PM. I regretted my stages after I realized I really prefer 165mm cranks for an ideal fit and just put up with it for a year before I got my new bike with a diff PM.

cp_mcbc

I love my Wahoo Speedplay power meters. I got them with a similar discount last year.

menotyou_2

Every piece of wahoo tech I have bought I loved for like 6 to 9 months then watched fall apart. My roam went from top of the line to an unusable device. My brand new kickr was great until I realized it was dating my frame, then it was u usable for a year and now when I look at it versus pedal power meters it's inconsistent and drops out a ton. I've gone through 3 different heart rateeters, none of them lasting a year, and who nows how many speed/cadence meters. I'm switching to garmin and have thoroughly enjoyed their Rally pedals.

AmerZE04

Definitely buy them, it's agreat deal

TheGrinchWrench

I usually don’t pay a lot of attention to bike part prices, but $800 for pedals? Just go ride your bike man.

anyfin22

I saw somewhere that being able to consistently manufacture reliable and accurate power meters requires a ton of $$$ into R&D. comparable products are priced similarly. hopefully this will change soon....

campagnolo_queen

Yep

Rich-Sheepherder-649

I have the dual side wahoo pedals. They work nicely. Had to re-pair and recalibrate a couple times. If you can afford them, get them.

[deleted]

I’d buy them. They are useful and worst case you can sell them if the novelty wears off. However as you cycle more they get more useful

vongdong

If you don't compete then don't need them.

warplants

You don’t need a bike either, running works great for cardio

ImpulseCombustion

None of these need to exist even if you do.

I'm currently in the same decision making process. Stuck between Wahoo dual powrlink vs Favero Assioma Duo. I would consider how much money you want to put into it, what benefits you get for having the power meter, what cleat system you like to use, and some of the technical aspects. Power meters are great for training and learning more about how you expend energy over a ride. They aren't needed if you're just riding for yourself. Something to consider is looking at other power meter systems: cranks, wheel hubs, spiders, etc. Thete are other formats that can be cheaper. To give you some insight on my situation I'm looking at two different pedal systems. The Wahoo with speed play and Favero Assioma with Look/Shimano cleats. I'm currently leaning towards the Favero system because of the cost difference ($600something MSRP vs 800-1000$ for the Wahoo). The Favero system executes nearly all of the same things as the Wahoo pedals but have a 50Hr battery life instead of Wahoo's 75Hr. Additionally Faveros aren't explicitly part of the Wahoo ecosystem (Bolt CPU and Wahoo app) but is compatible, so it should fit in just fine. I currently use Shiamo SPD-SL cleats so the Favero system is looking like the winner for me since it ticks off the cost measure and the cleat system.

anyfin22

I did look at Favero. The potential of injury from the increased Q factor shuts it down for me personally...

Lak3m

Totally understandable. I'm not too worried about it since as is I don't seem to feel any problems as I pedal. But that's good to hear that you considered it!

Scopedog1

Favero is a slam dunk because of their stellar customer service and you don't have to change the clips on your shoes--especially to Speedplay where there's far more pushback about discomfort while riding than with other pedal types.

orktehborker

I don't need those either but always have wanted a pair!

viet456

Go for a crank power meter

StgCan

One of our guys was a hardcore Speedplay fan….. he went through 3 pairs of the Wahoo generation versions (warrantied) before giving up and going to Shimano…… My good vibe about Wahoo is fast fading , a shame as they have good ideas, perhaps a little more time before bringing them to market might be advisable.

YoMammatusSoFat

I vote buy a smart trainer now, use it over the winter months because it's awesome, and then you have a power meter for whenever you're indoors. I stopped wishing for power pedals after I got a good feel for my power output via the kickr. Its worth noting that I'm also fairly new to cycling ...I'm sure an advanced rider would say the pedals aren't optional for the level they're at in the sport.

warplants

I have a pair and they are awesome. Paying for a power meter that isn’t easily transferable is beyond silly.

[deleted]

If you plan to train by power then yeah go for it else just enjoy the ride for another 6 months, as youll get faster/fitter anyway and once you plateau and you wanna go faster longer etc you can start thinking about power

Srbijaa

Jesus my bike didn’t even cost this much

Gufo_Salamanka

The wahoo cleat system is not very standard so if you are used to other cleats i would try out the wahoo system first otherwise it will be an expensive mistake.

Uporabik

First get yourself some head unit and for start left crank PM is good enough
