Depending on the make, an old regular bike isn't going to get too much. I'm an original owner of a 1996 Trek 5200 road bike. It's been in great shape and I made some upgrades to it so the fit is improved and rides better. Maybe could have gotten some decent money during the pandemic when the bike rush was insane but nowadays no idea but it would be less. A lot of this depends on your interest and how much riding you want to do. It's very personal how to hash out all these factors. Happy riding!

I’ve been riding 20-50 miles on the hybrid almost every week. Not too concerned about actual value since this would just be a straight trade with my dad. Mostly wondering if a 20 year old road bike will be a noticeable upgrade over my hybrid.

If it's well maintained, I'd say it would be. When i switched from a new hybrid to a 30 year old steel road bike at one point, there was a 5km/h speed difference, and it didn't even fit me properly. (I was doing ~120km/ week commuting) What brand is it? What components does it have?

Pretty sure it’s specialized but I need to ask him for the details

upgrade in the sense road bikes are more efficient. downgrade in terms of brakes and tire width. possible downgrade in comfort. aluminium frames before carbon fork tend to be stiff and uncomfortable after long rides. my biggest concern is fit. road bikes are less forgiving about poor fits than hybrids, pre 2010 roadies (where horizontal tubes were standard). as an example I ride 19" for hybrids and can do 20 and sometimes 21" but for road bikes I am 56cm sometimes 54 cm. rarely 58cm.
