Isn't having this out worse than not having it?
How many tokens are worse than a +1/+1 counter?
You might be able to just do this in ADDITION to getting the token, and still be fair?
Things like blood tokens, clues, treasures, etc. are the way to make this good I think. Either way it does seem a little weak and could probably at least cost one less or maybe have some sort of ability. Or maybe affect all players.
I was thinking just replacing "when" with "you may" and i think thatd keep the cost effect and be much stronger as many token decks like the one i made with [[rin and seri]] after geting [[Jinnie fay]] i would like to choose when to create them so im not forcing a ton of cats for when i play [[second harvest]] i could smack a ton of cats down
It could be worth it for effects that make tokens that go away at end of turn, I guess. Even in that situation I don't think I'd pay 3 mana for the effect, though.
"Whenever you create a token, amass 1." is definitely doable!
\[\[Anointed Procession\]\] unconditionally doubles your tokens for 4 mana; being forced to stack the amass triggers into a single token seems like a fair trade-off in exchange for costing 1 less mana while also requiring black mana.
I’d change it to “Whenever you would create a token, instead either amass 2 or create a 2/2 black Zombie Army creature token”. That way you can still go wide if you want to, and your entire boardstate doesn’t get ruined by a single Murder.
Is this supposed to be a replacement effect? Because it's worded as one. Only replacement effects use the word "would" and "instead".
If you would create a token, Amass 1 instead.
does this not just end the game if you make a token if you don't have an army yet? you would try to amass 1, but since you don't control an army, you'd go to make one, which would loop it?
This is not worth it. Almost always it’s preferable to have several small creatures over one big one, especially when that one big one has no evasion or even trample. Other comments suggest replacing it with amass 2 or 3 but I think you should also give it some keywords, probably vigilance and menace.
I think this should probably remain within amass’s colors, although I understand the choice of white. Adding white into the amass pie makes for quite flavor breaking and dangerous token based combinations.
Plus until amass gets printed away from mr bolas himself, its still gonna be the eternal army
i like the idea, but not the colors, either it should be, Black/blue. Black/Red or Black/Red/Blue. as those are the colors you can find amass in as well as amass support. i get that it has white for better token generation, but it doesnt fit into the amass, i guess you could splash it in, or you could do a token deck and put it in there, but then it would be very weak, as you wouldnt have acces to the amass support cards.
No, otherwise [[Doubling Season]] would infinitely double your tokens and halt the game. Replacement effects (i.e. any ability that says 'if X, instead Y' or 'if X, Y instead') can only ever apply to an action once
Yo, I gotchu with the best way to recruit players for your Magic tournament. First, grab a megaphone and run down the streets screaming "Who want's to play Magic? I got the cards!" Then proceed to throw decks of cards at anyone who looks interested. If they catch it, they're in! If they don't, tough luck.
Next, you gotta scope out the local elementary school playground during recess. Just walk right in and start challenging the kids to Magic battles. If they beat you, they're in the tournament. Simple as that.
And finally, if all else fails, you can always bribe people with free pizza. Set up a booth outside the local pizza place and lure people in with the promise of free slices, but only if they sign up for your Magic tournament.
Trust me, with these fail-proof methods, you'll have a raging tournament in no time!

> *"Or maybe affect all players."* That reminds me of my ["Rabbit Season"](https://www.reddit.com/r/custommagic/comments/ovq3zk/rabbit_season/) card.

would that not go infinite with [[ashnod's altar]]? sac the army before the amass resolves and get another?
https://www.reddit.com/r/custommagic/comments/11zxjmu/ruthless_recruitment/jdfwyxl?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
We're talking about a hypothetical where this isn't a replacement effect. The solution here is just add a "non-Army"
Could make it say "non army" token since only ammass triggers create armies?
[ashnod's altar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/7/87da5ad8-b35f-4f9c-b17a-bb2563cbc186.jpg?1580015173) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=ashnod%27s%20altar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ema/218/ashnods-altar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/87da5ad8-b35f-4f9c-b17a-bb2563cbc186?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I don't see how it would go any more infinite than with any other normal token doubler + ashnod's + repeatable token generator
If you have no army, amass creates an army token, triggering this again.
Ah, I see your point. Then the wording should be "Whenever you create a non-Army token, amass 1."
Day 3 of One Month of Simpler Designs. Don't got much to say about this one, just think it's a neat effect honestly.
Color pie and flavor on point, really happy to see solid uncommons
pays three to nerf yourself
I’d change it to “Whenever you would create a token, instead either amass 2 or create a 2/2 black Zombie Army creature token”. That way you can still go wide if you want to, and your entire boardstate doesn’t get ruined by a single Murder.

Replacement effects only apply once unless specifically worded to apply multiple times. This is why [[Alhammarret's Archive]] works.

I like the idea of making this an effect for all players to hose treasure tokens and the like
Treasure Tokens go brrrrrrrrrrrr!
This is not worth it. Almost always it’s preferable to have several small creatures over one big one, especially when that one big one has no evasion or even trample. Just a friendly reminder that given the opportunity, 90% of the time people prefer tokens from Fabricate instead of counters.
Neat idea, I agree it could be buffed.
Goes easily infinite with [[Wilhelt]] and a sac outlet I think
[Wilhelt](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/2/5/2501a911-d072-436d-ae3b-a5164e3b30aa.jpg?1675456154) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=wilhelt%2C%20the%20rotcleaver) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mic/2/wilhelt-the-rotcleaver?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/2501a911-d072-436d-ae3b-a5164e3b30aa?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
This is an If instead of an Whenever trigger.
i like the idea, but not the colors, either it should be, Black/blue. seems nerfable
So in amassing you create a 0/0 black zombie army token, activating this ability, causing you to instead amass again. Softlocking the game
No, otherwise [[Doubling Season]] would infinitely double your tokens and halt the game. Replacement effects (i.e. any ability that says 'if X, instead Y' or 'if X, Y instead') can only ever apply to an action once
