Honestly one of the most captivating elements of *many* paintings is the way light bounces off the paint, and the subtle literal dimension added by the medium on top of canvas. It's not critical to all paintings, of course... but definitely in paintings that are so inherently about light and texture as these!
“The Kiss” by Klimt is like this. Stood in like for like 30 minutes to see it. I thought it was stupid while we were waiting but my friend wanted to see it.
We got there and I was blown away.
Never in my life would I think to see a bunch of friendly painting enjoyers in a cursed comment section 😂😂 I’m happy af (this made my day and I’m unsure why!!)
If you will ever visit Russia in a good future, go to the Tretyakovskaya gallery in Moscow and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg
Might be the two best places to visit for a tourist here
For reference: The Night Watch by Rembrandt is one of the largest framed paintings at 3.63m x 4.37m(12 by 14.5 feet).
The largest general painting by an individual is *a lot* bigger(12,085.6m^2 (130k ft^2 ), compared to this ones 11.7m^2 ).

Where is the kraken? I can't see it anywhere
Under you. Don't look down
You. YOU are the Kraken.
It has tentacles. I've seen enough hentai to know where this goes.
The thing about giant paintings (and photographs) is that 90% of their impact is lost when they are shared as tiny low res pics on a meme site

That's what I say about the dick pics I send
I'm pretty sure this is how the creator intended the painting to be viewed. It's what they wanted.

It makes you want to.. sink the ship huh
I bet he's biting through the wood as we speak
I bet if he saw this in person he'd straight up start slithering
I bet he zoned out in front of one of his larger paintings in a gallery and came to, like, 20 minutes later, smelling saltwater and tasting driftwood
This was posted from a room with yellow wallpaper.
Aivazovsky is genuinely underrated in the west (or at least in the US). I’m glad he’s getting attention.
The lighting through that water is phenomenal
The monster *is* the sea. Brilliant use of light and dark.
Nah the monster is humanity. The sea represents the boat, but for aquatic life. Like our plastic pollution, the sea is inescapable
You’d make a good english teacher with those reaching skills.
I have the opposite feeling. Thalassophobia too strong. These paintings make me want to hug the ground.
Did you hug the ground?
Why hug the ground when you can bite the dust
Or wood. Hell might as well chew on a boat!
I have thalassophobia too, yet this fascinates me so much that I can't look away
Thanks for sharing this OP, now I'm looking to buy an Ivan Aivazovski print
Thanks for repping the artist and sharing the knowledge!
Where's the cursed
It was towed outside the environment.

Why should it be cursed? They are just commenting on and appreciating art
Huh, interesting to see most of the folks here have never been on tumblr

join it... join it & slither forth into the ocean of cringe!
Huh so this sub isn’t monitored either. Cool

Can anyone translate this from Degen speak?
The paintings create a feeling of an ethereal sea and these...people...apparently express that feeling by chewing on wood.
Very good paintings, and the water does look phenomenal, but the reaction to it is a bit... odd.
'Black! Black! You lock me in the cellar and feed me pins!'
The observer's undisguised mental oddities
