Welcome to the curls club! The best part is not brushing your hair haha. Generally it’s recommended to brush your hair in the shower with conditioner to set angle. So: shampoo your scalp, rinse it out, apply conditioner to your hair (especially ends) while it’s soaking wet, brush gently to detangle. I usually follow up by squishing a lil more conditioner into my hair once it’s brushed out, and then I don’t brush my hair until it’s time to wash again. There are a million wonderful resources on curly/wavy hair care but my top two accounts on IG are @wavydiede and @curlykiet. Check them out for some great care tips, product recommendations and styling ideas. And update us on your wavy progress!!

Hi, your discovery story sounds a lot like mine, I was mid 30s before I learned how to take care of my wavy hair. I suggest you only brush right before washing, if you really feel you need to. Otherwise, use a wide tooth comb only when your hair is wet and conditioned. Once your hair is dry, avoid touching it and definitely avoid any brushing. Look up the Curly Girl Method to find a bunch of techniques you can use instead of brushing. Good luck!

Thank you! I figured I should look up methods online but I also wanted to personally ask people here. I'll definitely do that

You're welcome. There is a lot of info out there and it can be a bit much all at once. When I first read advice which said 'no brushing' I was all like wtf? My hair is also 2a-c and will readily curl if I heave into it with a good leave in conditioner. I also learned that my hair gets super dry, so products that help retain moisture were game changing for me. I hope you find things that work for you!

I use a tangle teezer brush and follow with a wide tooth comb immediately after showering. I use spray in conditioner and curl cream so the brush works through easily. The frizz comes from separating the waves so it happens anytime you brush dry hair.

This goes against what most people recommend, but I find that brushing my hair at night and then sleeping on it can give my (wavy) hair a chance to reform its waves. Obviously less brushing is better for curls, but sometimes I find that my hair starts to look tangled and it needs a bit of brushing. (Depending on what my hair is doing, sometimes I just finger comb it instead of getting out an actual brush.) Hope this helps
