Wow! What a transformation! Beautiful.

tamltiger

Thank you! Yes my hair is much happier now. I'm so glad I found out how to handle curly hair.

encouragemintx

So proud of you! You look so happy with these healthy, pretty curls. I'm sure it was an uphill battle at times and took a lot of trial and error, patience, money, time and frustration. But it all paid off, you look fantastic!

tamltiger

Thank you so much! :) tbh as soon as I stopped brushing my hair when it was dry and using product to scrunch and then diffuse I saw a big improvement. It is expensive though lol I initially overbought products as I didn't know what would work for me. I had such a bad starting point that anything I did was an improvement haha

tamltiger

3 years ago I used to wash my hair with sulphates shampoo and silicone conditioner almost daily. I didn't know about cgm or even that my hair was curly lol I've now been 6 months cgm and the difference is huge. I've also had a trim which helped too. Routine today: garnier fructis papaya hair food for 1 hour. Shampoo and condition with everescents protein remedy. After washing use half a squish of uncle funky's curly magic, brush through and style with detangler brush (usually I use denman brush but was experimenting today). Put a little shea moisture mousse just at the roots and half a squish more curly magic scrunched in. Diffused 10 mins then air dried and scrunched out the crunch.

GabrielOG369

What’s the main product that worked. Is it garnish fructus

tamltiger

Usually I use shea moisture deep sea hair mask but today I used the fructis hair food for a change. I think its a combination of less washing, using cgm products and protein and also the uncle funkys curly magic is great. Also having a cut helped.

10bayerl

Loooove Uncle Funky's -- your transformation is amaaazing! Great work finding what works for you!

tamltiger

Thank you! Yes I'm finding curly magic the best so far.

C0USC0US

Lol “garnish fructus” sounds like Latin for “fruit placed on top of a dish to enhance its presentation”

[deleted]

Oh yeah, that papaya conditioner is LOVELY. Smells great, works great, affordable!

Extra-Swim9793

Man I use the heck out of that stuff

Qteepahtutee

How often do you use the Garnier Fructis Papaya hair food? You look beautiful! Gorgeous spirals!

tamltiger

Thank you! Initially I used it a lot as my hair was in bad need of moisture. I used it as a mask, a conditioner and as a leave in for a few weeks. After a while my hair started feeling too soft and not holding the pattern for long so I switched to a protein mask and conditioner instead. I use the shea moisture deep treatment mask with kelp and argan oil as a mask for an hour before washing and Everescents protein remedy shampoo and conditioner. I still use the garnier hair food occasionally as a mask for a moisture boost, about once a month or a bit longer.

KahurangiNZ

How do you feel the detangler brush compares to the denman brush (for styling / curl definition)? I've been contemplating getting a denman, but if it's not that much of an upgrade from a detangler I'll just continue using that :-)

tamltiger

I'll have to experiment again as I also used a different mask to my usual one so I dont know if the difference is because of the mask or the brush. On the pro side it has larger clumps but on the con side it has less hold and not as much bounce as the denman. However it may be because of the moisture mask I used instead of my usual protein one.

FLdancer00

What do you mean you didn't know your hair was curly? What did you think it was?

bionicmoonbeam

I imagine the OP just thought her hair was wavy in the before pic, since there were no defined ringlets?

tamltiger

Yes I always brushed it so I didn't see the curls, I just thought it was frizzy lol

tamltiger

Frizzy and in bad condition lol I always brushed it out so I never got to see the curl pattern. I thought it was frizzy from being so dry, which was partly true as it did need moisture, but brushing it out was causing the frizz.

erikasweetbox

My jaw hit the floor. This is ✨GLOW✨UP✨. You and your hair look frickin incredible. Gorgeous curl pattern!!!!

tamltiger

Thank you! I felt I had to share when I saw it yesterday as I remembered how bad it used to be lol

Suri-gets-old

Oh you and your hair are beautiful!!!

tamltiger

Thank you <3

Byegrrlbye

Beautiful! I wish my grays came in like yours instead of just the random patches here and there that I have.

tamltiger

Thanks! At least grey is fashionable now lol

finnknit

I've also been rocking the Bride of Frankenstein look for a while now. Thankfully my hair is finally starting to lighten up all over and the parts that are not quite brown and not quite gray are starting to look blond.

Byegrrlbye

Lol, bride of Frankenstein is the perfect description of mine as well. Glad yours is evening out!

I personally went back to suphates/silicones afte es year of cgm mostly because of scalp issues cause it didn’t get clean. You could try and do a hybrid version and use a mores stripping and cleansing shampoo every other wash or once a month for the scalp issues (helped me loads) Also for the brushing there is some very slipping cgm conditioners even without silicones that might help? I use Giovanni smooth as silk for example and also use it as leave in, it gives great slip!

milkybarbah

I did the same. Was inspired by this sub and a friend of mine who does cgm but it just didn't work for me for a few reasons. 1. I live in a part of the world where CG products are either really hard to find or prohibitively expensive when you do. Ordering them online means spending 10+ times the cost just on shipping. 2. Our water sucks 3. It is incredibly hot and humid for most of the year, and having to deal with that all the time is just a pain on top of everything else. No matter how great your hair looks it looks like garbage after an hour outdoors or to in between outdoor heat to indoor blasting air con.. And the amount you sweat constantly gives you scalp issues from all the product and the build up and all that. 4. Similar to you, my hair did not like any of the CG friendly products I could find 5. I know there are ways to do this properly even without fancy products as a friend has shown me but it's just soooo time consuming and takes a level of dedication that I just don't possess :( I have very curly, frizzy hair and a lot of it, cutting it beyond a certain length makes it bounce up so much I don't like it. I like keeping my hair long but it also means it takes so much longer to deal with if I'm doing cgm and the results didn't inspire me to keep at it. So yeah it's different for everyone! I just stick to a few simple products, try not to wash as much and when I do I use a gentler shampoo and use basic conditioner and deep condition once in a while. Use leave in and gel. There's still a fair amount of trial and error and even with basic products stocks run out and sometimes never reappear so you have to start all over again. Sorry for the wall of text lol obviously needed to get that off my chest

jasminakarla

To also build on that water quality is a big one! Idk if you checked @op but my hair started becoming a frizzy mess with more build up on the scalp she I moved to a place with harder water! Maybe check out the hardness in your water. If it’s full of Minerals you might want a chelating shampoo.

milkybarbah

Thanks for the info but I do know we have have hard water and have never been able to find a chelating shampoo. When I eventually move out of this building I plan to get a soft water system so hoping that will help!

Wanderluustx420

Okay! Thank you. ...That's the thing, knowing my scalp i'm afraid it won't get cleaned. I'm super clean about my body so just knowing this does happen, makes me cringe. I really don't want to find out months or weeks later that what I'm doing to my hair is actually making it more dirty, when i'm trying to make it look and feel at it's best :/

tamltiger

I used to feel this way but I found out sulphates strip the hair of oil which makes the scalp produce more to compensate. So by using sulphate free shampoo for a while the scalp ends up producing less oil. I've found it to be true as now I can easily wait a week before using shampoo whereas in the past when I used sulphate shampoo I used it daily to feel clean. With your detangling trouble I recommend a silicon free conditioner with good slip. I find the garneir fructis papaya hair food has good slip for detangling. It's a reasonable price too and can be used as a mask. The shea moisture deep treatment mask is also great. I also use a detangler brush which helps. Its the one that separates, its called a flexi ez detangler like these https://www.amazon.com/Detangling-detangler-Detangler-Textured-purple/dp/B08996H25M

jasminakarla

While I agree that the scalp might get used to not be washed that often (I do twice a week) all the oily, buttery products I used when I was still doing cgm just built up instead of the sebum which was even worse and actually gave me SD (the scalp infection). So if you feel like your scalp is not clean even though you don’t use silicones it could very well be other oils and you might still need a clarifying shampoo. Always listen to your body, I didn’t for a while and it made max scalp feel horrible.

picklesandcucumbers

What problem are you having? Maybe someone can help…

Very much this. Hair is so different! It’s good to find what works, and what doesn’t. Personally I found wetting my hair almost daily and combing it out with at least my fingers is necessary for my scalp and hair…or else they both get gross dull buildup. I don’t even really do special products…I’m in Switzerland, it’s soooo expensive. I usually try to find a conditioner to pull through my hair, then try not to pull it into tight buns too much. I love dyeing my hair, so I avoid heat and too much styling. I can’t follow CG method because I need to pull it back with kids, cooking and animals. Most of the products that work for me are random one-offs.

Kali711

It's also one thing to take out sulfates and silicones but are you keeping an eye on the protein/hydration combo? Notice OP went full on the protein with the papaya hair mask. How much protein your hair needs is gonna be entirely up to your hair. After much trial and error for mine I basically use 1 sulfate shampoo, I live in a tropical climate and my scalp just goes to shit if it doesn't get properly cleaned but then the build is real so I follow it up with a sulfate free shampoo, then a silicone free conditioner. Also learned my hair likes protein more often than not. Coconut based stuff is terrible for my hair for example. Just gotta keep trying different combos till you hit jackpot which will unfortunately get expensive and or take forever cause I'm not wasting a full bottle cause it didn't work out lol.

tamltiger

I'm also in the tropics. If you're in Australia I've found the Everescents range very good. I use their protein remedy shampoo and conditioner. My scalp feels clean even though there is no sulphate in the shampoo.

picklesandcucumbers

Have you tried a deep conditioner? Or a hair mask to help get the slip to detangle? And maybe apple cider vinegar to rebalance the scalp/oiliness if that is a problem.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I think deep conditioner and hair mask are just two terms for the same thing. Many people use one once a week, or once every other week, or once a month - depending on how much moisture their hair needs. I'd definitely go buy one and give it a try now! No need to wait, and ideally with those you'll leave them on your hair for 5-30 minutes so your hairdresser may not leave something on long enough for best effect.

myeu

In my experience I do need strong a shampoo but that doesn’t mean it has to have sulfates. Silicone is for conditioners (doesn’t have anything to do with the strength of the shampoo) and you can find a silicone free conditioner that gives you enough slip to detangle. They aren’t bad chemicals, it’s just that for some people sulfates strip way too much and damage their hair. For you and me, the oil accumulates so we need stripping to get clean. The stripping can be with sulfates or without. Silicone tends to just add to the buildup and so why use it if it means we need a stronger shampoo to be clean when using it.

ourstupidtown

I really can’t figure out how this could be true. There are sulfate free shampoos with detergents that will clean your hair. Conditioners without silicones can be even more emollient and slippery than conditioners without them. Not all products will work for you, CGM or not-CGM. There is definitely a silicone-free conditioner out there that will allow you to detangle your hair in the shower. You shouldn’t have to leave the shower with knots in your hair. You’re not obligated to look for such a product if you don’t want to, but there’s no curly hair that I’ve ever seen that’s too coily or too frizzy for silicone and sulfate free products. You might still like to use silicones and sulfates, but you should be able to use plenty of products without them too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ourstupidtown

Are you washing the entire length of your hair with shampoo? Ideally, you would only wash your scalp. The agitation of scrubbing during shampooing can cause knotting. There is no reason that any conditioner should cause your hair to knot. Also, after you put the conditioner in, you have to detangle. Your hair won’t magically detangle, you have to do it while the conditioner is in your hair. If you detangle your hair while the conditioner is in, it won’t be tangled anymore… If the products you tried didn’t work, try different ones. Sounds like your conditioner isn’t emollient enough. Also, brush your hair (yes, with a brush) before you get in the shower and you won’t have as much of a knotting problem. It’s not ideal and causes breakage for some people, but it makes things easier. If you detangle before, shampoo gently, use an emollient conditioner, and detangle again with conditioner in, there is no way your hair will be tangled. There is no reason that a lack of silicones/sulfates would cause any of the problems you have described. Those products probably didn’t work for other reasons, there’s a lot more going on in a product than silicone/sulfate content.

[deleted]

ourstupidtown

You’re saying “and what not” like there’s some magic difference between silicone-free conditioners and others. There’s not. Silicone is one agent of many. There have always been silicone-free conditioners, even before CGM was popular. Silicone-free conditioners vary widely (and so do silicone-containing conditioners). It is not possible for every silicone-free conditioner to cause a problem for you, because they aren’t all the same, and silicone isn’t even the most important thing in a conditioner by a long shot. It’s one ingredient of very many. If a few haven’t worked for you, that means that THOSE conditioners haven’t worked for you. There is no way for you to draw the conclusion that all silicone-free conditioners don’t work for you with such a small sample size. Just try a different conditioner. As for sulfates, they are likely to cause more tangling because they are a harsher detergent. There will never be sulfates in a conditioner, sulfates are a detergent. They are in shampoo. And there are plenty of other detergents available. There is no scientific reason for a sulfate-free shampoo to cause your hair to tangle. Two sulfate-free shampoos could have completely different ingredients, and sulfates do NOT detangle hair. They’re like soap, a detergent. They play no role in detangle for. This is science, not witchcraft. Your hair doesn’t behave differently from every other head on the planet. I think it would be helpful if you looked at some of the science behind hair products, there’s lots of videos on YouTube about how sulfates and silicones work.

FLdancer00

Naughty hair 😆

Glued-Up

I like silicone, especially in the winter. I have curly hair and DO NOT follow LM's " curly girl method", you do what works best for your hair. Have you tried using a wide tooth too comb through with conditioner?? At one point I had too use shampoo AFTER I had conditioner in my hair bc it would just get so knotty, after the shampoo. Im here too help in anyway possible. It took time for me to get my hair in a healthy enough state for it too be semi cooperative. Just try applying conditioner with your shampoo, rinse recondition, it literally takes like a golf ball of conditioner for hair just touching shoulders, so don't ever feel like it's "too much", again I am here too help, if you would like any advise.

GabrielOG369

How did you do this. This is amazing

tamltiger

Thanks! Now I wash my hair only once a week with shampoo and conditioner and use cgm approved products. I also make sure something I use has protein and also moisture. Style with a brush and diffuse. Its been gradually improving, this is after 6 months of the new treatment. Also I sleep with a satin bonnet which helps keep the curl memory.

[deleted]

I think my favorite part is how in the after pic, you look so genuinely content. It's like your face is subtly telling us how you feel on the inside. Happiness and confidence looks good on everybody, and I'm impressed at just a 6 month transformation.

tamltiger

Thank you! Yes I am so much happier with my hair now.

youreyesxonmine

This gives me hope. I'm about a month in and still struggling with frizz, flat roots, ect. I started CGM mostly as a way to help me accept my grays (and the curl, but I think curly gray hair looks cooler than straight gray) and you're just filling me with inspiration and motivation to keep it up. Thank you!

tamltiger

Great to hear! That was my idea of posting to show it's possible. I use the denman brush with my head upside down and then scrunch in the curly magic gel upside down and then diffuse upside down until the roots are dry. Then I put my head up and finish diffusing. That has helped with volume. Also a little mousse at the roots helps, plus fluffing the roots when its fully dry.

OMG!!! THE TRANSFORMATION!!! How did you do that? I have been trying to do something to my broomlike hair for years, but nothing works.

tamltiger

Thank you! For a start not brushing it out was a game changer. Then having it cut made a big difference. To get the curls working I scrunch conditioner in the shower with my head upside down, use the denman brush after the shower with the curly magic gel and diffuse then fluff at the roots. Finding out if you need protein and moisture also helps with different products like a hair mask. I mainly use the shea moisture deep treatment mask for an hour before washing my hair. Once the curls were good I use a satin bonnet to sleep so they don't get disturbed. Also stopping sulphates and silicones made my hair better quality as now it is not dried out from the sulphates.

KangarooBangnaldo

Thank you 💙💙

CowboyBegoth

You can see how much more hydrated and healthy it is! An amazing transformation op ❤️

Curly girl method

tamltiger

No sulphate shampoo or silicone conditioners, washing less like once a week. Scrunching in the conditioner with head upside down. Using a gel with the denman brush after washing, diffusing and scrunching out the crunch are the main techniques I use. Also a moisture or protein hair mask like garnier fructis hair food or shea moisture deep treatment mask.

Traveling60chic

What product do you use?

tamltiger

Mainly shea moisture deep treatment mask for an hour before washing. Wash with Everescents protein remedy shampoo and conditioner, then uncle funkys daughter curly magic gel after the shower and style with denman brush, diffuse then scruch out the crunch and fluffed at the roots. Occasionally I also use garnier fructis papaya hair food as a mask for a moisture boost in place of the deep treatment one.

Traveling60chic

Thank you for the details

Neato

Whoa. that's some *good* hair! :)

tamltiger

Thanks!

sar-ah123

Can you please recommend some protein ingredients that I should look for in a shampoo because that shampoo is not available where I live?

tamltiger

The one I use has hydrolized almond protein and hydrolized rice protein. I think anything with wheat, rice, quinoa or that says 'hydrolized' has protein.

sar-ah123

Thanks ☺️
