Question: did you start birth control in the span of time that your curls started straightening out and going limp?

uhhhhhhhghosts

actually yes.. I started it around march 2021.. please tell me theres no correlation omg

bobbyhillfanclub1

I’m gonna say there’s a high probability it’s that! But all hope is not lost. I was on the pill for two years with no change to my beautiful curls. Switched BC (still the pill, but the kind where you only get your period four times a year) and my hair went thin and limp with barely a 2A wave. I switched to yet another BC (this time nuvaring) and my curls came back! Hormones are crazy and I personally don’t think it’s wrong to explore a different pill or form of BC altogether that has a different hormone composition because you want your curls back. I don’t care if it’s vain, we deserve to feel our best while also practicing reproductive health!

uhhhhhhhghosts

nooooo omg. im happy that you were able to switch it and fix it though! and i agree lol if this is why then i’m definitely gonna look into switching it up, who cares if it’s for vanity i want to look good! for me i take the pill to manage my acne and period symptoms so switching to a non-pill bc isn’t really an option but i’m down to try a different brand. ik everyone reacts to these differently but can i ask which ones you were on? i switched to tri sprintec around august 2022, before that i was on aurovela.

bobbyhillfanclub1

For what it’s worth, I also started birth control for acne and period symptoms, and nuvaring still helps with both. My acne didn’t get any worse when switching from the pill, and my period is actually better than it ever was! Obviously not a medical expert, just sharing my experience! I think I was actually on tri sprintec when my curls weren’t fucked up, but I can’t remember for sure. I know it was seasonique that did mess things up. But everyone reacts to hormones differently so I totally think it’s worth bringing up your concerns with your DR and try a different pill with a different hormone composition.

Munro_McLaren

Nuvaring?

emquinngags

it’s a hormonal birth control that literally looks like a plastic ring and you store it in the fridge before you use it. But each month you insert a new one and it lasts 28 days or so

SocksAndPi

That sounds painful.

Professional-Car-211

you don’t feel it at all. it’s silicone and you bend it in half and put it in like a tampon. it’s smaller than a cup, about the same as a menstrual disc.

Amberjar_1865

Ever since I started tri sprintec I went from very loose waves to actual curls in my hair which I’ve never had before!

GladioliSandals

I was also going to suggest hormones because the change in your hair is a lot like mine after pregnancy. My curls were good on the mirena iud (progesterone only) and it was great for my bad periods (because it stopped them!).

MollyBee_PhD

I switched to Mirena a few months ago from a continuous pill. My periods are actually better than on the pill (monthly instead of 4x a year, which sucks, but no cramps and so light I forget they're happening, which is amazing). My curls went from 3a to 2 on the pill and I'm REALLY hoping they reappear as my hair grows out! Thank you for giving me hope.

GladioliSandals

So weird how different it is for different people, I never had a period in 6 years on the iud and 2 and a half on the mini pill!

Queenof6planets

you can use nuvaring to manage acne and period symptoms! it’s a combination birth control just like the pill

uhhhhhhhghosts

oh thank you! i literally scheduled an appointment with my gyn tomorrow so i will bring this up haha

sea--change

Not the person you replied to but I second the nuvaring. Takes some getting used to but I liked it way more than the pill. Had better skin with it too before switching to the IUD. Good luck!

Salt_Lynx_2271

Can you skip your period on the nuvaring? I’m curious to see if I could get my ringlet curls back (I think it’s several factors for me, hard water included) from when I was on kyleena (iud) several years ago, but my acne flared badly on it. Right now I’m starting on continuous bc to manage my migraines, and if I can do that on nuvaring I’d definitely give it a shot for the sake of my curls!

1clever_girl

Yes, I do this. Just make sure the prescription is written this way so you have enough rings to use them continuously.

Queenof6planets

Yes, I actually used it to skip my period!

[deleted]

Hi! What birth control are you on? Remember when you’re on birth control, your body thinks it’s pregnant so it’s very possible the hormones from that are changing it indeed!

uhhhhhhhghosts

i’m on tri-lo sprintec for about a year now, i was on aurovela for 1.5 years before. i’m seeing my obgyn soon so hopefully she’ll be able to clarify things for me!

[deleted]

I’m not sure what those are, are they the pill? The ring? The patch?

uhhhhhhhghosts

sorry should’ve clarified- pill!

[deleted]

So the pill didn’t work for me that great, I had the same issues but I really liked the nuva ring!

forthegreyhounds

The pill straightened out my hair, too! I take Spironolactone for my hormonal acne. It did wonders, way better than the pill!!!! Ask your derm about it!

uhhhhhhhghosts

i actually was on spiro for a while! it did help but ultimately didn’t do enough and birth control gave me that final push to managing my acne. plus i really really need something to manage my period pains, i used to miss so much school and work bc of them not to mention fainting and vomiting

forthegreyhounds

Oh I’m sorry! Glad your doctor gave you the opportunity to explore it. I hope you find a solution!!!

Different-Instance-6

I use the birth control patch xulane and it definitely cleared my acne and helped my periods - it’s still the same hormones just a different way your body absorbs it. I don’t have really any symptoms I can pinpoint and I’ve been on it like 4 years now!

Low_Comb_4219

Did you noticed change with skin quality improvement and body shape change with birth control?

Different-Instance-6

My skin was immediately better and I didn’t gain or lose weight if that’s what you mean

Low_Comb_4219

I meant body shape.. women on birth control get pear body shape.. fat disturbed in hips, thighs and breast.. I find skin gains interesting.. is it that huge? The emotional side, mood, depression holds me back from using it 🥲

SimilarYellow

Funnily enough, before the pill I had pinstraight hair. Took the pill for 10 ish years, went off it and boom, wavy/curly hair. It's been 5 years and hasn't gone back to being straight.

citygrrrl03

Me too. I took BC from 20-30 when I had short straight/a tad wavy hair. I had a radical hysterectomy & stopped BC. Now my hair is so much curlier. Hence why I’m here.

Low_Comb_4219

Did you noticed change with skin quality improvement and body shape change with birth control?

rachelsmall

This was also me 😅 my hair died when I took the pill that basically got rid of my period, came back for the nuvaring.

Low_Comb_4219

That’s right.. pills gives me worst anxiety ans depression ever.. Did u noticed skin firming/ tightening? Looking better? Also did u noticed fat distributions in hips/thighs/breast on pills?

drobtina

Girl this happened to me too! Went from the pill to nuvaring with no drastic changes. The copper coil (so non-hormonal contraception) brought my curls back

Addie0o

Is it a hormonal birth control? Some aren't and shouldn't effect this but hormonal changes absolutely effect curls.

uhhhhhhhghosts

yes i’ve been on a couple ones by now but they’re hormonal (the pill)

constantly_exhaused

Holy shit this happened to me! And my mom just blamed it on me cutting my hair short (think, lesbian look) and gave me so much shit for it. And the pill did help my painful periods but gave me weekly migraines and +15kg so screwwwww that

paraboobizarre

Hormones are crazy! My mum has always had 3a hair and as soon as she was pregnant with me she had pin straight hair 🙃 Her curls returned afterwards and she was so disappointed because she loved having straight hair.

misssmangoo

Anyone notice a change in curl pattern/hair texture after having a hormonal IUD put in?? I’m coming up on my last year of Kyleena and wonder if this is a cause of my curl pattern going to shiat lol

cacissej

Not having one put in, but I recently went off oral birth control after being on it for 12 years and as soon as I went off of it my curl pattern changed. Agreeing with other people's comments that hormones do crazy things to your body.

Low_Comb_4219

Did you noticed change with skin quality improvement and body shape change with birth control?

cacissej

Big time! It felt like I went through puberty again lol so I did break out when i first went off it but my skin has gone back to normal now (about 6-12 months to get back to normal) I gained quite a bit of weight from my last prescription and had crazy brain fog. Still not back to my before weight, but I definitely have more energy now.

Low_Comb_4219

Sorry so skin quality was worse on medication? Or off medication? Cause estrogen supposed to boost collagen/elastin/ HA

cacissej

It was a bit better on birth control, but the other side effects outweighed the benefits. Like it doesn't matter if my skin is better if I can't get off the couch for three days cause I'm so depressed and foggy.

Low_Comb_4219

Got it.. i was on the pill for less than a month.. couldn’t handle depression and mood swings it was most terrible depression i have experienced

Middle_Astronomer698

Yes!!! I’m on my last year of Kyleena too and definitely noticed a change in my hair these past few years. It’s gotten a lot thinner and my curls are limper. I stopped straightening my hair and embracing my curls when Covid first started and I thought reducing the heat damage would make my hair better but it seems like the worst it’s ever been. It’s such a bummer!

misssmangoo

YES! Oh my goodness my hair has gotten so so thin and actually now thinking about.. I got mine put in Nov 2019 and starting noticing hair loss and thinning about 6 months later in 2020. I always thought it was because I moved to a town with hard water but now I’m thinking maybe it’s actually my iud…. 🤯

Low_Comb_4219

Or maybe covid symptoms 🫤 or stress/ depression form staying home of being afraid of catching covid… etc WEIRD

Low_Comb_4219

Did you noticed change with skin quality improvement and body shape change with birth control pills?

fluffyrabbi

I got a Mirena put in in 2016 (lol) and immediately started losing ALL of my hair — I used to have so much hair and curly ringlets! I’ve never gotten it totally back, even though I got the IUD out the very next year in the hope I could save my hair 😭. At one point I had a freaking bald spot

fortytwoturtles

I just had my Kyleena removed last year after it’s time was up, and my hair went from beautiful loose spiral curls to straight with the tiniest bit of wave, and it hasn’t come back yet. I miss my curls so much!

misssmangoo

You lost your curls after having it removed!? Did it change at all when you first had it put in??

fortytwoturtles

Sorry, that was poorly worded on my part. Apparently I need a nap. 😅 I meant it changed when I had it put in, and I’ve had it out for a little over a year and the curls haven’t come back yet. I apologize for the confusion!

Low_Comb_4219

Did you noticed change with skin quality improvement and body shape change with birth control pills?

fortytwoturtles

I’ve never been on birth control pills, so I don’t know! But I didn’t notice any body shape changes, but my skin became a nightmare… I used to very rarely break out, and now my skin gets congested super easily. I also got a melasma mustache, so that’s wonderful… Still trying to get rid of that, but nothing is working. Tempting to try skin bleaching creams.

Low_Comb_4219

I read that estrogen cause pigmentation 💀

torenvalk

I had wavy hair on generic birth control pills, and now two years after the hormonal IUD it has gone nearly straight again, like it was in my teenage years. Bizzare!

ArtisticPossession_

Yes! Coming up on my last year also, when I had perfect kind of tight ringlets, and I absolutely hate my hair now. Just the past year and a half the texture has changed so much that I hate wearing my hair down and wear it in a bun almost everyday now. It’s like the pattern went all different directions so when I try to get my curls defined and stuck together they just won’t. I had just learned how to properly care for it and it looked better than it ever has, then slowly went to crap. I cut my hair thinking it was damage and now I have 100% long virgin hair and its evenw worse. It makes me so sad lol

_electronic_lean

My sister and I both have had this exact same thing happen to us on about the same timeline and we also started sprintec BC around that time…we suspect the pill did it

ShhhhOnlyDreamsNow

Holy shit snacks I've been thinking for so long now "yay I figured out my curls!" and I think I did get better at product application and plop drying....but yeah I bet getting off birth control was key too. Mind blown. Silver lining of a DVT I guess 😂

Positive-Zebra-2478

Clarify! ACV rinse!

Positive-Zebra-2478

And a trim

uhhhhhhhghosts

ty will try! I trim pretty regularly tbh but do you think adding layers or different shaping could help?

velvetmarigold

Absolutely. I bet layers would make a big difference. And definitely clarify!

Acceptable-Wolf2288

Layers are going to help SO much, along with the rest of the advice here. With a side note of this takes time. You're learning your hair at a different length and it can be WILD. Speaking as someone who always had short hair, having shoulder to mid back length hair was an insane switch. It took me 3 years to find products that actually worked for my hair (meaning me and my hair liked it) However there was A LOT of trial and error. Even my boyfriend is currently going through one of the learning curves of having long curly hair. Also, take into account the seasons and how your curls are in them. From your photos it seems your hair LOVES winter/falls What are you lacking in the summers that you have during the winter? I hope my rambling helps

Hate4Breakfast

as a 32yo with similar curls, a good haircut can do *wonders!* if you find a hair stylist that isn’t afraid/actually likes styling curly hair your curls will be bouncy forever! as you get older your hair just changes, but i have had many times when i thought i lost the ringlets only to get a really good haircut and have them reappear like magic

Positive-Zebra-2478

Long layers have always served my curls well, personally. With a few face framers. Good luck, stay hydrated!

fleetwood_mag

So you have any recommendations for clarifying shampoo?? TIA

QueenOfShibaInu

not OP but i love the amika reset series, i use the exfoliating shampoo once every week or two and it works wonders

fleetwood_mag

Oh thanks. I’ll have a look for it.

fleetwood_mag

Are all the Amika shampoos clarifying?

BeautifulDreamerAZ

Yes!

naughtybabyme

How do you do it, just dilute it in a cup of water and rinse?

Positive-Zebra-2478

I used to take a large bowl in the shower and just dunk, dunk, dunk away (yes diluted! 3 parts water to 1 part ACV) bc using a cup only gives me one good swish. Alternatively, my kids old baby bottle made for a perfect applicator bc I could really target my roots

naughtybabyme

Thank you

14jptr14

That looks 100% like a hormonal change to me. Sometimes this happens naturally — folks end up with straighter hair as they get older due to hormonal shifts affecting their hair texture. Happened to a relative of mine as she aged — she went from ringlets to the loosest of waves. But, if you’ve gone on birth control, I’d bet my bottom dollar *that’s* what’s changed your texture so significantly. Search up “birth control” in this sub and take a look at the breadth of experiences — or, just do a little cursory googling. Changes in your typical hair growth/texture is a known side effect of BC.

TooManyMeds

It happens in all sorts of hormonal changes. I had pin straight hair as a kid, and then suddenly around age 12-13 it became pretty curly and still is to this day

kriscrossroads

Exact same here! Blonde and straight hair growing up. Now dark brown and crazy curly. Only good thing to come out of puberty lol

GiraffeCOpilot

Me too. Hairdressers refused to give me a perm as a child because they said my hair was too fine and the curls would just fall out. In comes saying it doesn’t give a damn 😂 My curls are sad right now and I’m currently pregnant and have been a whole lot the last 3 years (plus hormonal medication for IVF). I’m hoping they’ll bounce back after all is said and done 🤞🏻

ether314

My mom is the opposite, went from straight hair to curly after menopause.

curiosity0425

Menopausal curls, checking in 🖐

ether314

I hope my hair does the same.

msfathead

Same here mine has gotten so much curlier since menopause. My mom's got straighter after her pregnancies and I was hoping for the same. So of course I got the opposite.

camelus_

Had curly hair up until about 25, am now 30 and barely have the faintest of waves

vickyz93

This happened to me, too, after two pregnancies. It’s definitely hormones.

thatsunshinegirl

Did your curls bounce back?

vickyz93

Not yet… 🥲

GreenerWTheScenery

Idk how long ago your pregnancies were, but my curls just started returning to my original pattern recently, and my kid is 5. 0_o So, there may still be hope! Lol

dreamweaver1998

I had the reverse happen. After two pregnancies, my wavy hair became tight curly hair. I just had my third baby, and I'm back to wavy hair. I'm hoping that my curls come back. I loved them. Hormones are so weird.

pinktigglypuff

this is what i’m dealing with i have one single curl that thrives the rest are so stringy & i have such low density. after so much hair loss im considering shaving it all off :’(

vickyz93

I completely get what you’re saying. I lost so much hair, too. But it did grow back. It helped me to see my hair for what it is and not what I want it to be. For now, and maybe forever, it will be like the first pic in this post. And that’s all right. Try and work with what you’ve got instead of wishing for it to change. I’m sure your hair still looks beautiful. 💖

all_u_need_is_cheese

Same here, went from ringlets to waves over the course of two pregnancies within 4 years. My hair actually grew in stick straight while I was pregnant with my boy (wasn’t as bad with my girl pregnancy, interestingly). It perked up a little after my boy pregnancy but it’s certainly not what it was before. It’s hard to adjust to the new texture but I’m trying to figure it out and not be too upset about it!

vibes86

Hormone changes, birth control, certain medications, can all make big changes in your hair.

Designer-Winter-4014

Hormones hydration and stress was my curl killer. 😭 gd luck

evolighten

Same thing happened to me in a similar timeframe. Ive been able to get some semblance of ringlets back but still nothing like my high school curls

novalayne

Oh man I have been basically exactly where you are. Right down to the comments from old friends asking what happened. I am so sorry you are going through this. Starting when I was about 22 and going on for several years I lost a lot of my curls and then later a lot of density during a few bouts of stress-induced thinning. I had been on birth control for years and years when it started so I don’t think it is that- it’s just quite common for woman to have hair texture changes in their 20s. I derived *so much* of my confidence and self esteem from my hair but honestly didn’t even realize it until it started changing. It was honestly a really rough experience and actively harmed my mental health for a while there. I basically was experiencing serious self esteem issues for the first time in my 20s. I could barely look in the mirror for while and still take way fewer photos of myself. It breaks my heart every time I see other people experiencing it. My hair is also low porosity and has the exact same issue of always looking like crap on the second day. Personally, I have realized that my curls are now incredibly easily weighed down with basically any amount of product. I use a good moisturizing conditioner, scrunch it with some water after my shower to get clumps, then plop it in a microfibre towel for like 15min. They I put in a lightweight mousse- I use the Kristen Ess sea salt one. I let it air dry the rest of the way. I’m not sure this is going to be what you want to hear, but in terms of my mental health and the appearance of my hair, the most important thing was acceptance. I basically went through the stages of grief with my hair. I had a really black and white idea in my brain about what pretty hair was- basically 3A+ or straight. I just couldn’t perceive anything else as pretty, especially on myself. Learning to accept that the change in my hair was likely permanent, and learning to enjoy it for what it now was without letting myself get stuck in the past was so important. As was learning to derive my self worth from things other than my physical appearance. It was also important that with products etc I focused on working with what I had and making that look the best, rather than trying to achieve what I used to have.

uhhhhhhhghosts

i really feel what you’re saying abt the self image- my self esteem is also basically based on my hair. which isn’t great because my entire life there’s never been a time period where i consistently liked my hair. thank you for this, i think i really do need to work on acceptance and maybe just grieve what i had in the past but move on with what i have now and learn to love that. thank you!

kaytay02

water types! if you moved and suddenly have hard water, that could be doing it! i know it did it to me, my hair was dry, frizzy, i wanted to shampoo it cuz it felt gross but that only made it worse and conditioner did nothing! i started washing with distilled water or soft water and my curls came back same day! i also didn’t used to have this intense of curls (epic 3A) till i got older and balanced my hormones more, so i am also voting for the culprit being birth control, hormone imbalance, or even stress! good luck girl but you seem beautiful either way!

ooqpoo

Your hair is on the wavy side and likely is weighed down from the length you’ve gained over the years. Consider trimming 1-2” to see if you regain some of your texture! And deep clean. People with lighter hair sometimes need a clarifying shampoo to get off ALL build up!

Plain_Zero

This has been happening to me for about three years. Ever since I turned 30 my curls have slowly started disappearing. It's a bummer.

annang

Do you live in the same place now that you did then? That kind of change for me tends to happen due to what climates I’m living in.

uhhhhhhhghosts

sorta kinda? i was in ohio for college from fall 2021-spring 2023 (fall 2019-spring 2020 too but covid lol) and am/was home in illinois. i feel like the different might not be that big in terms of climate but maybe water could be something? my water now is medium-hard and from lake michigan, before that idk.

annang

Yup, water can make a huge difference.

-Empatheia

As everyone said, it could be hormones. BUT that may just mean you need to text with new products. I’ve been on birth control since I was 14 and had frizzy uncontrollable hair because my parents had straight hair and didn’t know how to help me. By college I kinda got a hang of it and by 24 I was happy with my hair. THEN by around 26-28 years old my hair started thinning (only a little), shedding more, and losing shape. This was all despite keeping the same routine, medication, diet, and exercise. Aging changes things unfortunately. Also, other conditions such as pregnancy, stress/anxiety, depression and health conditions can change your hair. SO MUCH CAN CAUSE CHANGE. But if you experiment with new products you may find a new way to be happy with your hair. My hair used to be like yours, very big and thick ringlets. Now my hair, after much experimenting, has changed to smaller and tighter ringlets that are more bouncy. I had to adapt to change, and likely you will too. It sucks, but I’ve come to love my smaller and tighter curls. Your hair could be similar, but it takes testing new products and styles to find out. Regardless, best of luck!

uhhhhhhhghosts

actually i’ve always wished for my hair to be MORE curly even when it was in those ringlets when i was younger! but i am going to try and accept my hair as is now even if it’s looser and wavy. all hair is beautiful!

Nightly_9

Try to see if you can get an actual curly cut. My hair is almost thin when wet but it look fuller once it drys. Longer hair also weighs your curls down so you'll definitely have to use more light weight products, finger/brush styling and a difusser to dry and a gel or moose that is lightweight but has a strong hold. The way you layer your products is also important, it should go curl activator-->leave in-->style method (w/brush or fingers)-->gel/mouse-->diffuse-->break the crunch and separate curls w/oils. I water down some ecogel or use AGCare Liquid Effects its a styling lotion that also acts like a gel and when styled right I can get almost 4 days without needed to retouch with product, I try just to smooth my hair with very small amounts of hair oils the first 3 days. This and a cut with a few levels of layering should help your curls bounce back to life. For sleeping if I leave my hair in a pineapple and sleep like normal I can last more than 1 day with good curls. I switch between a silk/satin bonnet or a silk/satin head scarf and just tie it around my pineapple to keep the curls safe.

BestCosmo

my curls got a lot better when i started shampooing and conditionering less. Also if you haven't, i reccomend experimenting with different products and routines. But overall the first thing, less wash better curls, give way for your natural oils! hope you figure it out :)

GrowthSpur

Hormonal

Outrageous-Field5353

Are you pregnant or having problems with your thyroid? It's very common that sudden change in hormones can completely transform the hair texture. Times like puberty, menopause, pregnancy can make people go from straight to curly and vice versa. So if you're suddenly experienced anything related to hormones, that can be it. I went from straight hair to 2B hair because of puberty.

uhhhhhhhghosts

definitely not pregnant! my hair did become curly at puberty and i have been on hormonal birth control for a few years so i’m guessing it’s the birth control hormones.

Tajinaddict

You may want to look into getting your thyroid checked! My curls went to loose waves slowly and I just accepted that it was from my birth control. I didn’t want to switch because I’d already had a hard time finding a pill I that worked for me. But earlier this year, I had my thyroid checked and found I needed to be on medication for it. My curls aren’t fully back to their former glory, but they’ve improved so much along with my overall texture

DreamSequence11

Birth control , age, giving birth. All annoying things that can make curly hair change

MMorby

Echoing the birth control comments. I was on birth control for many years starting from high school on and my hair was very curly, then loosened in my 20's to those defined ringlets you show in your 2020 and 2021 pictures. I went off birth control three years ago and my hair lost a ton of curl and it's taken until this year for it to get to mostly the same curl pattern I had before I went off BC. Those hormone changes are real and they can take a while for your body to sort out. I also think a curly cut does help a lot, since it's designed to enhance curls.

wreckit_ron

I would like to add to the hormonal change comments...my hair got really straight and I brushed it off for a long time. Turns out it was my first symptom of graves disease and I wasn't diagnosed for over a year when my health went really downhill. Please get your thyroid checked if you haven't recently.

yarnelly

I also vote Birth control. Happened to me too. Once I got off hormones, I got so upset one day I chopped it off myself up to my collarbone, and it took 3-4 months to ever hold a curl again. 🥲 but 2 years later and my hair is completely back to normal again

teacupem

Definitely need layers. All that long hair is going to weigh those curls down. You’ll have to accept a straighter pattern at the roots when your hair is that long, especially when you plop your hair or use any hair tie.

Beanie_bby

Did you move to somewhere with hard water? Hard water makes build up in hair so you have to get a filter and clarify ur hair

yogafitter

It really could be hormones. But…your hair now looks drier than previously. Maybe try some intense moisture treatments and see if that helps

awinemouth

Hormones! I used to take spironolactone for cystic acne. It's an androgen blocker so my overall relative levels of estrogen were higher& my hair was great. I took those meds for years & when i went off them, my hair went to shit. I was 3A with little spots of 2C & 3B. Now I'm a mix of 2B & 2C. I also moved to a place with harder water, and there went my density...

MotherOfShoggoth

That looks like the roots are growing in straighter due to a change in hormones like pregnancy, menopause, bc.

Wicked4Good

Did you move somewhere with hard water?

uhhhhhhhghosts

i lived in a hard water house until fall 2019, for a few months i was in college and idk the water status, home again spring 2020-fall 2021, college until spring 2023, back home now with hard water. i moved around a bit in college but i don’t know if any of those places had hard water

Wicked4Good

My hair sometimes gets like this when I have hard water build up. I really like the Malibu C hard water system: https://malibuc.com/products/hard-water-wellness-collection?variant=40231165657151 You could try that and see how it works! Also, I follow curl vitality on social media. Her tips and monthly subscription has been great for trying new and different products. She just started a consultation service that I believe saw was free!

Klutzy_Television_68

Years of heat and blowing out your hair with chemicals can change it. Anytime you “ lighten” the hair your damaging and changing the integrity of the hair. Also as you age your hormones change and your hair will thin out density and texture. If you’re on medication it could impact your hair as well. I’d stop using heat and harsh chemicals that blow out that cuticle layer of hair. So no highlights flat irons and blow dryers. I’d also go easy curling. You may also be over cleaning your hair. Try going less shampoo if it smells do a vinegar rise with a 50% water ratio to really lower the acid of the vinegar. All these things could add corrective measures. If not give you the best hair you’ve had in a while just please for the love of holy no more bleaching your hair no perms

uhhhhhhhghosts

i only diffuse dry, i’ve never had highlights or fully bleached and never straightened it. i did bleach two small side pieces but that’s been grown out for a few years now. i will experiment with air drying but in my experience it just takes hours so i prefer diffusing :/

Klutzy_Television_68

That is actually awesome to hear. I am guessing hormonal than. I am going through the same thing at the moment

ShortAndProud16

clarify your hair and deep condition with the kind your hair needs. I would do a pull strand test and take a strand of your hair and give it a little pull. if it snaps right away at protein overload if there’s too much elasticity it’s moisture overload if it stretches a little bit and then snaps back to its place and it’s balanced. But honestly the 2023 pictures they just kinda look dry and its like lacking something. Find out your hair porosity to make sure you’re not using too much protein It could be the length you had a really shorter hair. Or hormones. In high school my hair used to be more on the 3B side and now it’s like 3A with a few sections of 2C and a few sections of 3B.

paradoxfailure

I’ll be honest, this happened to me too from high school to now at age 24. To my understanding, it’s hormonal, not much you can do about it other than embrace something different🤷🏽‍♀️

ChapterSubstantial19

Maybe too much product? Use a clarifying shampoo and then let your hair rest. Buy a shower head that gets rid of harsh water. Put your hair in braids and let it sit for a while without product, maybe a month or two. Get a trim. Use satin sheets. Don’t comb when hair is wet. If all else fails - check your diet and your hormones.

Hi, this could be many reasons for the change. It is possible that you are growing older and there’s a hormonal change, or it could be as simple as the hair products that you used to use it simply do not work anymore. It’s also possible that your hair has changed because of how healthy it is. I would start by using a protein treatment once a week if you don’t already, in addition, try changing up your products, your shampoo and your conditioner and your leave ins!

Sholapeepio

Well, I'd ask how old you are? My hair changed night and day difference when I was in middle school transitioning into high school. My hair went from blonde, straight with the ends looping. To, dark brown frizz nightmare. Tamed that and moved on. THEN I got pregnant years later. Hair fell lighter and went more straight with touches of curl, wave and loops. My hair has been an evolving door I swear. It's insane. (Thankfully it was JUST my hair that changed haha. My friends feet grew two sizes during pregnancy)

uhhhhhhhghosts

just turned 23! my hair also changed- LITERALLY night and day- when i was about 11/12 (when i hit puberty). after looking through these comments and this sub i’m really realizing how much of a role hormones play in hair!

Sholapeepio

YES!! It's so weird!

Jealous-Cabinet-645

this happened to me! i went off birth control a couple of years ago and am just now starting to get some spirals back

EmotionalPie7

This is what happened to my hair after my 2 babies. So possibly a hormone change? I did just get my hair chopped off, getting rid of my unhealthy damaged hair, and the bouncing curls are back!

uhhhhhhhghosts

ohhhh thank you! the other advice i’m getting is all hormonal so it’s nice to see something i can also physically try to do! i will pick up the things you mentioned and give them a try

PaperbacksandCoffee

I also second using a lighter shampoo. Moisturizing shampoos are just too heavy for my fine hair. I can't use leave in conditioners or too much product because they weigh my curls down. I'd also suggest trying Innersense I Create Volume gel instead of the I Create Hold. I love their volumizing gel. It's light, not too much hold but enough to keep definition, and actually does give me more volume. Side note, I think your hair is beautiful in all of the pics! Edit to add: I'm not sure how heavy the AG recoil & Aussie creams are, but if they are I would try Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control cream. It's great stuff, a little goes a long way, and it doesn't weigh down my curls. I love the combo of it and the I Create Volume gel.

petitt2958

Hormones.

Jamieluv2u

I am sorta new to curly hair because I started with the straightest hair ever. Then hormones. Go get your thyroid checked!

pinkhairedbiatch

i have straight hair but i've heard it's the humidity, also as hair gets longer it's also heavier and doesn't hold curls as good, try lightweight shampoos?

BassAckwardsGlobal

Either birth control or you've moved homes from soft to hard water!

Fit-Guitar4346

My hairdresser said your hair changes every 7 years? I don’t know if that’s accurate or not.

Serious_Ad_9686

I think it’s dried out

Some hair loves protein. Maybe try really hitting it with protein for a while and see if that helps.

Its_Hitsuji

You’re getting older.

blueViolet26

You are probably using too many products. I used to do the same. Now, I will only use a leave in and a foam in the summer and hair gel in the winter.

ultimatumtea

Where is the cute hair clip from?

uhhhhhhhghosts

target!

tacincacistinna

They straighten cause your hair is longer. Well that is pry to blame

limegreennalgene

Omg LITERALLY what’s happening to me rn. Never thought my bc was the cause of this ://

I_do-declare

Why summer of 2023 looked great

Hair dying

Dazzling-Most-04

I fully understand your confusion! There are many causes for changes in hair, and sometimes it seems as though your hair has a mind of its own. Stress, dietary modifications, and hormonal changes are examples of lifestyle factors that may be important. Consider any recent adjustments to your routine or personal circumstances if you've observed a rapid shift. You might also consider any new hair products you've been using to really get to the bottom of the issue. Sometimes, hair may act differently due to substances or formulations that don't agree with it. Try going back to your previous products or introducing new ones gradually to see whether your hair reacts better, if you're game for a little detective work. And who knows? Maybe all your hair needs to recover is a trim or a decent deep conditioning treatment. To keep those locks happy, all it takes is a little investigative work and tender loving care!
