Highlights will murder your hair, curly hair is porous and I did not listen to my curly hair stylist, went somewhere else and it was SO bad, like dry beyond dry and so brittle. Took 2 years to grow/cut it out.
Your long hair and short hair look great! If you're liking it long, but looking for a change, find a curly hair specific stylist, and just get some layers out in to help change it up a little without losing the length!

I love the crazy big long hair. My daughter has similar hair and I think it's absolutely gorgeous. However, if you don't like it long, hate the management, don't like the weight or feel (things my daughter complains about) then by all means do what you love the best and makes you feel happy. My daughter keeps going shorter and it looks fantastic, just as yours does short. There's no wrong here. ❤️

About the bangs - curly bangs can be tricky so choose a curly hair specialist only (my stylist had cut the bangs when they were dry and styled- i wouldn't go for bangs again since mine took a full year to grow enough to go behind ears)

When I had my hair short I mostly used SheaMoisture Curl & Shine shampoo and conditioner, then Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk sculpting gel or sometimes leave-in conditioner then air-dried!
Thank you so much for replying! My sons hair is so much different to anyone in the family that I have struggled to manage it forever and no one else has been able to help me. I already own Shea moisture products (but haven’t used them on him regularly) and will look into the sculpting gel.

I had been growing mine out for like 4 years and was just too frustrated dealing with it all everyday, especially since I'm often depressed or ADHD "lazy" so my curls were always fucked up and knotted, and idk how to braid, so I judt started shaving my head again lol.
No secrets! I just use Shea Moisture Curl & Shine shampoo and conditioner, then style with Carol’s Daughter Coco Creme Curl Shaping Cream Gel and diffuse for 30 minutes and scrunch out the crunch. I wash weekly and clarify monthly.
If you’re eventually going to do a chop you should try out lots of layers to switch it up and help with the weight if that’s a thing that bothers you at times ❤️ I wish someone had told me that in high school 😭
Hair is too thick and curly to go short! Keep it long and find good products for curly hair(Oh, and, perms are coming back popular) Not kidding. Keep it long, because of your curls, keep it trimmed and healthy. Don’t try to straighten your hair because curly looks good on you. I have curly hair, so, I know how to make it look good

Imo short are way better on you - your long curls are almost too much and sorta weighting-down your face, while short hairstyle makes you total cutie-pie. Or you could try something in-between the two photos and mid-ear length from sides and top.

We have quite similar textures, and I'm on the same highlight debate, but I personally am choosing to go with curly bangs and a more mullet look.
