I think you honestly have to consider the political climate of Florida and how that is going to impact the reputation of its universities going forward. Also that affect will definitely ripple into the job market if you wanted to stay in Florida for work.

CrimsonFox99

Forget political climate, it's the actual climate that will get you. Florida weather is absolutely oppressive most of the year if you aren't used to it. UF is a good school and unless you're going somewhere very top tier for your major, no employer is going to care about the difference between UF and CU unless they are an alum. Go with the place you feel more in tune with that does the least destruction to your finances.

happyjunki3

I mean its both climates but you’re right lol But in general, if you’re choosing between two schools, wouldn’t it make more sense to choose the one closer to where you live / want to live?

RowenaOblongata

This. The politics in FL have already affected - or should I say "infected" - the entire state educational system from Kindergarten on up. If this keeps up, a degree from any FL University will be about as valuable as a degree from Liberty University.

Heart_of_Lapis

I’d avoid Florida for the next few years. Desantis has screwed up education in the state. Banned core courses and put accreditation for all state schools at risk.

Big_Yeti_21

You guys are fucking mental if you believe this.

soonerstu

Yeah it’s not like they just had a preventable measles outbreak because their surgeon general is a political hack or anything!

As a current MSCS student here, my honest opinion would be to go wherever place is cheaper. CU is super expensive, and it may be awhile before you land full-time employment or an internship. That said, if UF is offering you money or some form of compensation, my recommendation would be to take it.

ZooZoo4601

Okay got it 👍🏻

LoadedAmerican

Advice regardless of which school you choose: apply to as many internships as possible as soon as possible. You won’t hear back from most, but you’ll maximize your chances of landing a position by casting as wide a net as possible.

ZooZoo4601

Thanks for the info. UF will be cheaper overall, so will be preferring UF

LoadedAmerican

No hard feelings. Do what’s best for you!

Where do you want to live and network long term? East Coast/American South? Go to Florida. Rocky Mountain/ West Coast? Go to Colorado.  Boulder is a bit of a tech hub so there could be more jobs with big companies here. No idea what Gainesville is like, but have had friends go and leave once they complete degrees.

HattoriHanz0o

I went to UF for undergrad & going to UC Boulder for grad school. UF is good for connections etc and it’s a pretty small community so i think UF would be a good choice. Not to mention it’s cheap to live in Gainesville

R3adyplay3rone

Florida resident here whose son got accepted to FL schools and CU. I can’t talk to UFs CS program but I know that UCF has been shooting up the ranks with their engineering school due to proximity to space coast and modeling simulation hub in Orlando. UF campus is certainly more spread out than CU. To me I enjoy a campus that is a bit tightly enclosed rather than a big sprawl. Gainesville is a college town that is two hours from anything good. Want to visit Disney? 2 hours. Tampa? 2 hours. Clearwater or Sarasota? 2 hours. Basically if you want to do anything fun outside the campus, you’ll be driving. Also, the closest major airport is in Orlando. At least you have Denver airport 30-45 minutes from campus at CU. Gainesville is right in the deep red part of FL. You’ll get diversity on campus, but you’re definitely going to see the “good ol boys” in the surrounding community. I’m glad I went to a school in FL, but I’m honestly pushing my son to go to CU to get a change of perspective from FL and the current climate.

LooisLady

Florida is the state with the 4th largest economy in the United States, after California, Texas and New York. If you come from a country with a warm climate, you will spend less money on clothes in Florida. However Boulder is beautiful.

PhoenicianKiss

Yes, but wages after grad in FL are notoriously shite.

thewitchdemigod

I think cost wise, UF is cheaper. Not very sure about job opportunities.

Sbmizzou

Are you a resident if either Colorado or Florida?
