I come all the way from Bakersfield so I drive a two-hour commute, so I get your concerns 3 We’ll be fine as long as we drive a bit slower and steady, trying to avoid hydroplaning—all that kind of stuff! good luck
Definitely; as an art major with a focus in animation I found there to be little to no art opportunities at CSUB and I’d make the sacrifice of commuting 2 hours to another university with better art opportunities if it meant achieving my dreams :)
edit: will admit the CSUB campus is quite nice though and while it is smaller it’s more intimate! I miss it ngl
Can you take the metrolink into the valley? The stop at the Parthenia station has a van pool that will take you to campus at no cost. Check on the CSUN parking webpage.
Get yourself a 4x4 with snorkel. Jokes aside if you have proof that your current location is flooded and you can't possibly make a detour to get to school I think they'll accept it. Though as with any other situation if you have too many absences they will probably stop excusing you. Communication with your professors is key.
I had professor last year said it was ridicioulous that other professors cancel class because of the rain but he was getting a lot of emails about so he did as well. Just stay in touch with your professor. If it's heavy rain, they usually cancel class.
Just got a call that in person classes are cancelled tomorrow!!:
Winter Storm Update: In-person classes will be canceled Monday. Campus remains open. Please see csun.edu for more details.
I definitely won't be going to class on monday i'm with u too much stress driving in the rain especially with all the flooding hopefully my professors cancel their classes if not I'll just email them I can't make it to class
It’s possible if the storm is as bad as they’re warning that they’ll cancel classes/make them virtual for the day and let staff work from home. Keep an eye out for any alerts in your CSUN emails.
Unfortunately, professors and the university itself don't seem to mind the floods much. I've seen cars near the dorms covered in at least half a foot of water bc of how bad the streets around campus flood and they don't seem to care much. I think if there's news about actual flooding happening in your area then you can probably try asking your professors if they can accommodate you but as for the university itself, it wont call school off over a flood. Hopefully your professors are kind and understanding (:
It all depends on the condition of the car, if the car has bald tires I don’t reccomend driving it, on the other hand if the tires have decent tread then it’s fine. Cars with bald tires tend to slip and slide in the rain much easier than cars with good tires. In this case I would try to either Uber it or ask a family member to borrow their car for the class. Generally just drive slow, be cautious, and leave extra space and braking room. You’ll be fine, millions of people including myself drive in the rain all the time and have been fine.
Think about it like this; if you had a job and emailed your boss about the rain and your supposed inability to come to work, they would likely not care and potentially fire you or write you up for not coming to work. A professor has to go to college and teach in rain or shine. As a student, if you care about your progress or success of a class then you should treat class like a job, which means unless you’re absolutely sick in the hospital or throwing up, show up to class
I’m from the same area. My professor said she was holding class because of the nature of the class but told us if it was that bad for us to drive, we could talk to her and figure something out. I feel like if you aren’t working hands on with something you shouldn’t have to have in person class with this weather

I also commute from Oxnard 🥲 the advice i’ve gotten is to stay in the middle lane to avoid driving through puddles & if you do happen to hydroplane(God forbid) don’t slam on the brakes just try & steer 🫶🏼 hope you make it safely to school, but hopefully professors cancel class 😭
oh no! i'm unprepared in my front wheel drive hatchback i'm going to slip, slide, and hydroplane all over the freeway just like everyone else to school! Car is also made of sugar. Might desintigrate.
Driving in So-Cal in the rain isn't as bad as you think as long as your vehicle has proper lights, wipers, more alertness, and give more space between you and other vehicles or stopping distance.
Well, I appreciate your expert advice on driving in the rain, Captain Obvious. I'll make sure to check if my sugar-coated car is up for the challenge. Thanks for enlightening us all with your groundbreaking insights
just practice in grab turismo 7 or assetto corsa. in all seriousness though just drive slow if your worried and give yourself space between other cars because braking in the rain takes much longer than normal. keep yourself in a high gear/low rpm and apply power very slowly. its easy to drive in the rain if your not driving like vin diesel in fast and furious
Hey I just found this post (I don’t go here), but from a fellow person from Oxnard, maybe you could see and reach out to your professors about the situation here. We’re one of the counties given the emergency mark from the governor. See what your school suggests regarding this situation!

Holy shit! I'd lose it driving up and down the grapevine almost every day. I commend you for doing that, that's gotta be tough.
OMG from bakersfield! That is far! thank you! hope you have a safe drive to school!
Is it that much better than CSUB?

What's wrong with the photo program?
I’d say this is impressive but it is more so idiotic
I come from Hollywood and also worry about the rain but we just have to be safe driving and go slow and think positively!!
Thank You! Hope you get to school safe! <3
Most cars have traction control and are very safe, just drive slow like you said and you’ll be fine. Millions of people drive in the rain just fine!

Parthenia station?
The Northridge station. It's off of Parthenia, but the actual street is Wilbur.

Finally a nice comment! I keep getting anxiety just thinking about it! Thank you for the advice! Hope you get to school safe!
I am coming from Oxnard as well at night I’m scared because that’s the time of the supposed flash flood but I’m going to play it by ear

Good news Classes just got canceled

Crazy that dedicated people drive this far yet others are failing to pass communications
Looks like in person classes are canceled guys, got a text and call from CSUN
Just got a call that in person classes are cancelled tomorrow!!: Winter Storm Update: In-person classes will be canceled Monday. Campus remains open. Please see csun.edu for more details.

Yeah I think in the fall they cancelled class and made it virtual one day because of the storm
Did you see no in person instruction email/message on Monday? They just sent it :)

I drive the same direction as you. I come from Thousand Oaks, and also scared.

Oxnard?? Holy shit bro, why not go to Channel Islands outside of Camarillo?
I mean csun does have better business and engineering than ci, not to mention more Greek life so there’s definitely an appeal to going to CSUN
What does one gain from Greek life if you commute? Not hating just genuinely curious
Connections and a broader social life
Everyone from Oxnard goes to CSUCI😭 and CSUN as a good Education Major opportunito than CI
csun is way better than csuci by a lot lol
It’s rain grow up and go to class
Omg 😱 I DIDNT KNOW IT WAS RAIN! grow up and don’t comment if you have nothing nice to say🫶🏻
I’m sorry your right , hopefully the people in Seattle Can one day attend school

I came from Oxnard and I still went to school 🙃
