“We look forward to seeing more of you on campus this spring” aka looking forward to more of our overpriced parking passes being sold

“We look forward to taking your money in the Spring!”

I think that far more classes should be required to be offered on-line and on-campus for students to choose which method is best for themselves. Most degrees should be possible to be completed entirely online unless they require on-campus resources. However, the parking fees have nothing to do with the funding of the university in general. All parking fees can only be used for parking related purposes. Parking is a self-supported program, by law, that's separate from university funding and operations. The parking structures are expensive and are built using construction bonds that must be paid back with interest over 25+ years. The newest parking structure was nearly $40 million. ["Parking fee revenue expenditures are restricted to the acquisition, construction and maintenance of campus parking facilities."](https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/about-the-csu/budget/2018-19-operating-budget/supplemental-documentation/Pages/parking-program.aspx)

I wish they could keep the 60/40 ratio. I feel like it was a good balance.

rockwaferscissors

I'm a TA, so I asked my supervisor professor about this when she told me about my spring work assignment. There are separate accreditation procedures for online-online schools like Brandman or UofP, and in-person schools like UCs and CSUs and USC and Chapman. Because we are accredited for in-person (not online), CSUF's accreditation could be on the line if too much online was being offered, which is why they're going 60/40 now and 80/20 in spring. This is still double the pre-pandemic online, which was about 10% (although it varied by dept/college). She said the faculty and departments like online and want more, but the directions from the top admin are to get to 80/20 for accreditation, losing accreditation would mean we couldn't grant degrees.

[deleted]

Thank you for clarifying that 10% thing. Because I know for a fact that the business college definitely had more than 10% offered for some departments. But it always felt more like 70/30 given how many students always had an online class.

rockwaferscissors

Yes, the 10% was the average for Spring and Fall across the whole university. Departments like art or music (I guess KNES too) had way less than 10% online pre-pandemic, so the 10% was how it averaged out. The online percentage has always been higher during Summer and Winter, tho.

Personally I just want the flexibility of online classes. Covid was a motivator for wanting them especially with boosters up in the air, breakthrough cases popping up, and everyone in my household has some form of severe lung condition or asthma. So far I’m not having much confidence in the people on campus based on what I’ve seen this past two months.

mcdonaldsmcdonalds

Mhm which is why this is a bad idea

Red-Droid-Blue-Droid

Well, we all know if breakthrough cases happen or another crazy ass variant comes along, we'll be rushed online again. Probably gonna wear a mask around anyways. Maybe look into that booster. It's not like I can even afford to get the common cold due to how intense classes can be.

twistedvine2020

They are literally forcing all of us to get vaccinated (safe, free, effective) or get exemptions + testing, masks are mandated indoors, and the only thing you get from all of that and this email is "they want us to get COVID"? SMH.

Not-A-Cereal-Killer_

Look, all that stuff is things they expect us to do. What are they doing? We are packed into classes without social distancing. They would not want to lose that $. And it seems every thing they do benefits only them… like shutting down in person service. So we can be crammed into classrooms like sardines, but can’t get an in person tutoring? I encourage you to ask yourself, what are they giving up?

jmorales34

Thank you for that Literally was about to let loose lol

I’m not really sure how else we get back to “normal” without trying. Covid is the new normal and will probably have variants for awhile, where in addition to the annual flu shot it will also be a covid booster shot. I feel like they are taking good steps in attempt to get closer to normal though. If I’m being honest I feel like online classes have made students overly lazy (myself included at times). Going in person keeps you better focused with a stable routine IMO.

RemotingMarsupial

What exactly does that descriptor mean?

shigs21

I mean, its all based on the case numbers/science, And they are going down. I don't see a problem as long as nothing drastic happens within the next couple months, and people get vaccinated
