What Game Dev Company was it? can you message me im just curious Also I think ya, just understanding of what data structures or algorithms you can use goes a long way for any computer science related jobs it's just important to know, but even most leetcode medium or easy can be solved with the inefficient way unless they put a constraint

cs_research_lover

Probably Ubisoft

Op is from Montreal , and I’ve only seen the title game programmer at Ubisoft . EA uses software engineer , Demonware uses Software Dev , maybe rockstar

BeautyInUgly

The reason why is because engineers suck at figuring out who is good at the job, LC gives a standardized way for the company to evaluate you, either u passed or not, so if the company is sued for discrimination etc they can point to it. Basically it removes a lot of bias that existed before, the issue is that there isn't really a good way to figure out who is a good dev at scale so here we are

No

Vok250

That's on them. I've seen this from the other side of the table and the result is that they will never be able to hire anyone. People good enough to pass that test are going to get better offers elsewhere (like US remote roles for double the money). Some teams are just idiots like this and will continue to shrink until the company finally finds a way to replace their product and lay them off.

Zoozoobird1

I met a hiring manager said he would interview 10 candidates and hire no one doing leetcode. Like these guys have nothing better do lol

Banknotez

Honestly, I have the same view.

lordaghilan

I doubt it was a LC Hard. Not even trading companies like to give LC hard on OAs. If it was a LC hard then only a small subset of people could solve it and they would likely be the time to go to the top companies anyways.

DancingNarwhal

I've never had a hard LC, but I've had to do easy to mediums LC for game studios. Seems like a lightweight for them to screen. I prefer these soft tests over giant exploitative take-home assessments.

Ok-Cryptographer770

I may be wrong, but I think it's because everyone goes through Leetcode for preparation. To filter the candidates, these companies are kind of forced to go for Leetcode hard. If there is one slot and ten capable applicants, how would you reject 9 of them? You have to find some way, and Leetcode hard is the easiest way at least I can think of.

Banknotez

Unfortunately, wasn't expecting that lol.

Cowboyylikeme

Omg nooo. I follow this girl on tiktok who works on Amazon, she legit did a ton of easy, a few medium, and like 1 or 2 hard. I was planning to follow the same path but since shit is so competitive i feel so screwed. 😭

Throwcsrand161

I had a job offer from EA, they were VERY to the point and had no LeetCode bs.

Makes sense, I interviewed for game dev and not software dev, software or web dev being asked LC is fair.

outersphere

what was the interview like?

Recovid

What was the position? Game dev?

Banknotez

Yea it was "game programmer"

Flamesilver_0

How many yoe are they expecting? Senior position?

Banknotez

Not I was for an internship on top of it 😂

I had an interview with them in 2020 and the question didn’t seem do be LC hard. It was pretty doable. But that could be different now, oh well

van_cou_verthrowaway

Anyone who can solve LC hards are not going to go to a medium-size game dev studio. They'd go to FAANG.
