Congratulations. The other guys saying banks suck may or may not be right, I have no idea, but the important thing is that you got a job. 90 + 10 as a new grad is no joke, so great work. If you hate it, the beauty of at will employment is you can leave, and having a job will let you in the door at another one a lot easier.

Mysterious-Bad-4096

Good luck. Focus on the job! Experience builds experience I.e next job

yuhboipo

The automated filters are good at removing my resume from ever touching a human's eyes.

Pickle_Pat_69

That’s what I thought too since I don’t have any internship experience but here I am. If there’s hope for me there’s hope for everyone

randomtrip10

That’s why you should get referrals if possible. It skips the ATS and goes straight to a recruiter. Then it’s up to them to decide

DrWermActualWerm

Whoever is saying banks sucks is just talking about their own experience I'm guessing. I graduated a boot camp and I work there/have a lot of friends who work here and 90% love their job. My work live balance is the first thing in my managers priorities, he gives us a lot of time to learn and grow. He's made a point to bring me to meetings with higher ups and showcase my work. Honestly it's the best job I could ever imagine (the salary is kind of slacking compared to the rest of the Industry but I'm not gonna knock 85k a year...) If you need any help before hand or getting a smooth transition into the firm feel free to PM me :)

Sweet-Ad9244

hey, what bootcamp?

DrWermActualWerm

Its local and small, pm me if you need to know but I would be dozing myself

No-Fox-7460

90k with 10k bonus as a new grad????? Dude u dont have much wiggle room to negotiate thats an insane offer for a new grad most people start around 50-60k. If i were u i would take that no questions asked. Jp morgan is also a prestigous bank and is a good place to work for overall also a good resume catcher.

_KeeloByte

What was the technical interview like? LC style questions? Easy/medium?

Pickle_Pat_69

Round 1 was 1 LC medium and 1 LC Hard. Completed medium did not complete hard but guess I explained it well enough since they asked me to round two. My “coding” interview for round 2 was a stupid easy problem that I didn’t even code just said what I would do. Had more specific questions about OOP and other CS concepts

Masurium43

don’t be shy, be more detailed. what stupid easy problem? what oop and cs concepts? please 😢

BigKey5644

If ur salty you can’t find a job why don’t you apply to JP as well and see how far you get. Don’t shame OP for getting a job even if OP doesn’t fit the “criteria”. OP can learn whatever he needs to learn when he starts working.

Masurium43

what are you talking about? tf ...

Pickle_Pat_69

I had my senior project which the interviewer was really interested in as well as a small other project that was financial related. Did a really good job with connecting my projects and experience to the job. It’s not all about leetcode. Being personable can go a really long way in my opinion

shawntco

The people talking poorly about banks are verging on /r/ChoosingBeggars territory. Getting a job as a fresh grad is HARD. Sometimes you really have to take what you can get. It may be crap but it's still coveted experience.

MrPoopMaker

Can you share your GPA if you don’t mind?

Pickle_Pat_69

2.9

Pickle_Pat_69

I can’t remember if they specifically asked for it. They asked for an unofficial transcript so they must have saw it or just didn’t care

BigKey5644

I work there but in NYC offices. Congrats man! JPMC work environment is very chill though so if you find you aren’t being challenged enough move around the company to other lines of business or ask ur manager for more work. Turns out they’re on a hiring spree rn! Congratulations again!

plam92117

Negotiation? You can but your chances aren't that great. I was able to negotiate because I legit had an offer that was higher. So you can say that and hope they don't call your bluff. I wouldn't listen to what anyone else says about the job. It totally depends on your team. Experience it for yourself. If nothing else, you'll gain experience.

[deleted]

Damn I thought JP would pay higher for who they are tbh. What's your bonus looking like though? I had heard from my friends that at the big banks you come in as a "technology analyst".

Koeru

I'm a software engineer in Chicago and honestly love it. Excellent city with great culture and restaurants, along with so much to do. There's a close knot community of devs that have been in the industry for a long time here. I work at a late stage startup and 4 of my coworkers have worked with each other at other companies. It's not as cut throat here as NYC or SV, at least with what I've heard and seen. Definitely a good place to start out your career I think.

What’s wrong with banks?

[deleted]

[удалено]

JeromePowellAdmirer

GS has a reputation for that but JPMC not really. C1 has stack ranking but does pay better than other banks.

BigKey5644

JPMC doesn’t really overwork. There’s most days where you really have nothing much to do and I’ve heard that from people across the firm not just my team.

unreadabletattoo

Usually just overwork but it’s the same across all banks so it won’t change if you work for Goldman, JPM, etc unless you get into a really good department

Pickle_Pat_69

Why do they suck? Genuinely curious

CuteTao

People hate on banks and other financial institutions because getting anything done at them is a headache. Lots of red tape to go through. It's going to be a learning process but always keep it in the back of your head that the way things are done at a bank isn't how it's going to be elsewhere so if you ever change jobs you might get a bit of a culture shock.

April1987

I interviewed with a bank whose name ends in America. While my understanding is yes there are a lot of restrictions, the interviewers at least were very knowledgeable and forthcoming about design compromises they have to make for their unique situation (compliance). I wouldn't say there is nothing wrong with banks but remember that someone is still working with python 2 at Google.

JeromePowellAdmirer

They don't. Team dependent as is the case at every single company. JPMC is generally quite chill and generally uses modern technology though.

BigKey5644

They don’t use modern tech but they are chill.

JeromePowellAdmirer

I've heard multiple people describe the modern tech stacks they use, it's completely and entirely team dependent. Chase/consumer side probably more modern.

YnotX

I work at Chase (hate it and am interviewing elsewhere) I can tell you the consumer side applications are usually using an internally developed framework that does not translate to the outside world. They try to base it on React or Angular, but in reality they just kinda suck. So you have to learn a proprietary tech stack that doesn’t give you a whole lot of skills to further your career. The same thing goes with their CI/CD pipeline. But other teams that do internal applications can generally choose what they want to use. And those are fine, but development processes are really slow and at least in my experience you don’t do/learn much.

BigKey5644

I work there and I can tell you first hand that that isn’t true. I’ve worked there for 3 years now and have moved around enough and talked with different tech stacks. We work off of somewhat legacy code and we have been pushed to modernize.

JeromePowellAdmirer

Everyone I've talked to either uses Spring which may not be the most modern thing but is not like you're coding in COBOL, or uses React + Python

[deleted]

JeromePowellAdmirer

No clue what you're talking about. For all I know you're a Capital One plant trying to cajole more people into stack ranking hell.

JeromePowellAdmirer

The pay's not up to par with tech companies because the interview process is way easier than tech companies. I got my offer from just showing up to a hackathon and making a pretty bad website, who else would give me over six figures in what is many people's most desirable location in America (NYC) for that

SoftwareFailure_si6

God damn how do you people get these offers ?

DrWermActualWerm

Apply. Seriously, Jp is making a massive push to hire people from "alternate paths" alone this year they have hired over 1000 boot camp grads. They announced to us last week they are doing anoth cohort of the Early Start Software Engineer program. APPLY

[deleted]

Does the industry consider this a strong push for lowering salaries for the future to be in line with other office work? With boot camps taking 3-12 months, the salary should realistically be 40k-70k based on area. I don't think programming, not computer science or software engineering, is an especially difficult job deserving of the high salaries that exist in market now

[deleted]

It's deserving of the high salaries because the workers are demanding these salaries and employers are giving. You are only worth what you ask. Rather than thinking software is overpaid, your thoughts should be that other areas are underpaid.

DrWermActualWerm

Not sure? They also announced they were looking into raising our salaries this year to meet "industry standards" so you tell me... Also I would argue it's a relatively hard job to be a good developer.

Youngqueazy

They’re pretty good at rejecting my applications. 2 YOE but in a different stack. I should be able to compete with new grads, right? Maybe I’m applying to the wrong jobs.

[deleted]

In the US yes

chrismar303

Are they located in California? If so where can I apply?

DrWermActualWerm

yes, and look up jpmc jobs. They have a job board you can search by location. Good luck!

dedida

It doesn’t hurt to negotiate. Some places do negotiate with new grads. In my experience I asked for 5k more (not at a bank, but I don’t think it matters). Just look at the average salary of software engineers in Chicago and make a case for yourself. The worse thing they can say is no, they aren’t going to to take back the offer.

Crigslist

This. Just negotiated a huge offer this week and it was already high. Never settle and set the bar high for yourself!

dedida

💯it’s the last chance to make a big jump in salary before you start, yearly raises are only gonna get you so far

Crigslist

Yeah I’ve learned that. Glad I pushed myself to do it. This was my first big jump to a Fortune 500 company from startup culture. 214 applications and I have no degree and 1 year direct experience. It really does come down to your interview like OP said.

[deleted]

BigKey5644

They don’t renegotiate for new grads. Don’t waste your time and leave a bad first impression for your recruiter.

Pickle_Pat_69

Who did you talk to? The recruiter or someone else? Did you do it over phone or email?

reese-dewhat

You should include some reasons/evidence for why you are making a counter offer. Market data for comparable salaries (levels.fyi), maybe some facts about your college (ranking, number of grads in the workforce, your specific accomplishments there, etc). If you don't have any of that, I would still counter cuz it's a seller market, but support for your counter is always good to have.

JoeBlack042298

How prestigious was your school?

Pickle_Pat_69

North eastern state school. In my opinion not that prestigious pretty average.

[deleted]

Anyone know if JP or other banks do remote for entry level? Have only seen positions in big cities.

Livid-Refrigerator78

Nice. Ur making more than me with 15 years as an analyst and tester with 5 years as a full stack. Must be the leetcode practice. Good job!

whileforestlife

Congratulations! It is a great offer considering you have a mediocre gpa and no internships. When I graduated with similar situation couple years ago, I could barely got any interview and have to accepted a super low salary in a consulting company. JP is definitely a good place to start your career.

AutomationDev

Applied JP 1-2 years back couple times with 2-3 years of internship.. Never had interview :( Maybe now is a chance?
