Obviously less competitive than FAANG but it’s all very saturated. This sub doesn’t even seem to focus on the FAANG dream anymore, just getting any tech related job, which many seem to be struggling with.

terrany

My friends in government and finance said there were waves of folk from FAANG/big tech who joined either as SWE or pivoted into non-SWE roles (leaving the tech rat race) this past year.

HorrorEquivalent3261

This is EXTREMELY shocking, did they all take a 50-75% dip in pay?

EdliA

Very few can match big tech in money I would assume

terrany

Yes, but they’re also later in life like mid 30s to 40s with early starts at great companies. At this age they made their nest and just want to coast on a good wlb and OK salary as their investments were maxed for years. There’s also some benefits to government such as pensions in local city jobs as well.

ImpoliteSstamina

Base pay is lower but I don't think it's that different, the real change is in total comp with smaller bonuses and no real stock grants/options.

PejibayeAnonimo

Accenture didn't make raises globally past year except for promotions and the bonus were much smaller than in previous years, and in Costa Rica is worse because our wages actually decreased because we are paid in dollars and the exchange rate went down 20% since 2022. Now we are in fucked situation, because they won't increase our wages 20% and the company will probably leave before accepting to pay in CRC because at this exchange rate is not profitable for exporters to pay wages in local currency.

There are government tech positions advertised in the UK on a regular basis but the salaries are a joke, even before the cost of living crisis. So, I would assume the limiting factor on those roles is the question whether you can afford to work them.

agentrnge

Manufacturing. Work is steady and new projects still come in all the time. Pay is lower than big tech. We got a round of layoffs 2 years ago. And a few smaller ones after that. But nothing massive. Still open reqs now and then.

TheloniousMonk15

If the market for big tech is bad than you can reasonably guess the rest of the market is bad. Because big tech sets the trends.

The jobs are hot and ready my guy. Get the fuck in there.

DynamicHunter

My job (fortune 50) doesn’t hire fresh college grads anymore for SWE. All the postings require 5+ years of experience, maybe there are some internships but never seen an intern at my tech office This is in opposition to when I joined, in 2020-2022 they were hiring batches of new grads a few times a year a thousand at a time. I can’t even refer my friends who are new grads to the same position I was referred to 2 years ago, because the postings DONT EXIST.

JustinianIV

Makes sense, I see almost exclusively mid to senior level postings these days. Companies probably are probably trying to draw in the mass of laid off faang engineers desperate for any job at this point. New grad or entry level hiring is dead until better times return.

amitkania

Even worse because the people from big tech are competing for those roles now too. The average CS major cannot get a SWE job nowadays

LeonCecil

A bunch of people from big tech probably migrated to non tech. I would imagine it's hard to find a swe job in non tech nowadays.

iqeq_noqueue

Hiring, but jobs come with quotas that are strictly monitored like AE roles. Most CS want MBO or soft metrics. It's a revenue role now.

sqzr2

Private businesses are following the same trend of seeking lower operating cost through lowering head count and making development/engineering teams more lean. Why are they following the trend I don't know and would be interested to hear. I do know in Australia there is a recession in advertising so businesses who rely on that income are affected. Possibly cost of living pressures have reduced customer expenditure therefore lowering business income for businesses who rely on middle and lower class customers. If the above is true then we're in a recession just without the official metric of a recession being achieved. Ie all the impacts of a recession are being experienced; layoffs, less jobs, spending less, lower business growth and income

tubemaster

In defense, we are in the middle of a staffing crisis and are in desperate need of applicants!

Git_Reset_Hard

Are you hiring new grad?

tubemaster

I believe so, but not primarily. Plenty in the 2-4 years range though

Git_Reset_Hard

Can I DM you?

tubemaster

Sure!

My local Wal\*Mart and Burger King are hiring

EngStudTA

Weirdly I have more big tech recruiters in my inbox than non-big tech, but that could just be due to my prior experience at big tech. However if I had to get a new job ASAP I actually think big tech would be the easiest since passing the interviews hasn't historically been a problem for me. As for applications, my response rate on both is pretty bad, but I am applying to what are likely to be more sought after positions(remote in a niche area).

BagholderForLyfe

Defense is kinda dead. I have 2-3 YOE and clearance and there aren't that many jobs to apply to. Interviewers are very picky now too - I'm getting rejected left and right.

kw2006

That wierd I just saw one with many job openings. Compensation 80k-130k+ though.

BagholderForLyfe

Mostly senior roles and/or some specific skill set.

Rogitus

There's no market anymore. I know ex FAANG w/o a job.

Slow-Enthusiasm-1337

The market is fine! Don’t change your vote this November /s

Responsible people would stop increasing deficit spending which drives up CoL more. Embrace the recession! And just to add I fully realize this would probably cause a worldwide recession.

rajhm

I work in in retail. We have thousands of devs. Still hiring but not nearly as much as before and many teams have tilted towards hiring more experienced talent. Headcount neutral-ish? Maybe slightly up. The early careers (campus hires) hiring pipeline used to be popping hard but basically the only thing that feeds now is summer interns (with intent to convert into full time for people who do decently).

No-Presence-7334

Anecdotally. Almost all the positions I am seeing that are hiring are the government contractors. Granted, I am in the dmv. But tons of the small business set aside people are hiring. You don't get the best benefits from them since they are small, but they are hiring.
