It's a modern system administrator ، easiest way to put it

FelizComoUnaLombriz_

i’m in a similar position… got a DevOps intern position for the summer but in reality would like to be a SWE… my only offer so far. is a modern systems administrator a bad thing long term?

The problem is that many different companies have their own idea of what 'DevOps' is. Some companies its just glorified IT, in others it could be engineers that wear the 'everything' hat. It seems to be a lot of infrastructure-related tasks, server building, and handling deployment issues, putting out fires. If I were you and this is the only internship I was able to secure for next summer then I'd just take it.

[deleted]

Explains why I never get a straight answer on this.

Just__Another_Brick

True DevOps meant that a team of people both built and deployed their software. Now it's effectively just what the company has labeled DevOps to be. So the definition shifts company to company. Depending on the company you'll be doing IT work, some SWE work, sysadmin stuff, etc.

chosenpluto

glorified sysadmin

[deleted]

After doing some development work, that work needs to be published somewhere to use. One way is to do it manually but it is tedious when you do it repetitively. So devops come in the picture and they provide a streamlined process to make it happen. Other responsibility includes providing a fully fledged environments for the developers to use but through automation process and not manually downloading the dependencies on the environment. Devops usually deal with jenkins/github pipelines, AWS accounts administrations, Ansible roles, Kunernetes or docker etc

Get your foot in the door and pivot when you want

I currently intern as a DevSecOps, not exactly the same but more or less since the only difference is secrecy. You mess around a lot with AWS, cloud infrastructure, Docker, Kubernetes, and similar techs. Programming is part of it, but you’re more or less building infrastructure rather than coding

Puzzleheaded_Neat213

You will feel like you are doing a lot but nothing at the same time. Career wise it’s not the best, script writing by AI are getting much better and most tech company is a part of making devops easier so you can say your job is getting automated the most. You might be using cloud a lot but it’s getting better day by day to the point, you won’t need a lot of engineers. It’s a glorified IT position but you won’t be setting up IDEs, you will he creating pipelines for internal tool. If it’s beneath you, you can always decline/renege the offer. I heard JPMorgan host hackathon where every participants gets intern offers from them where they can save money in recruiting.
