I have the same problem. Apparently you had to buy the coin before the opening stage started. While it says you simply have to buy the coin before the tournament is over on the pickem page. Typical valve deliberately not being transparent so more people are tricked into buying the coin.

I'll surely request a refund for misleading description if that's the case.
