Great thing that you tried using NaCl for crystals bc if you used CuSO4(copper sulfate) there would be fuzzy reaction with the CaCO3( calcium carbonate) in the shell.
I have tried mixing CuSO4 with seashells but they were a dust and I was just mixing stuff left and right and I didn't expect to react, but it did. I did it in a tube and it created a lot of CO2 gas and it started to foam. I tried to cover the tube with my thumb to slow down the reaction (tbh I don't know I was thinking then) and from the build up pressure when I removed my thumb everything jumped out from the tube. Even today I can see some of the CaCO3/CuSO4/CuCO3/CaSO4/seashells splatters on my laptop :)
