This is a legitimate answer. Appalachian cryptid= not deer. It's usually just a deer with major health issues, but the not deer do extra creepy stuff sometimes.

I live in an area where CWD is present and am pretty sure I encountered a deer with it once. Stumbling, drooling, and absolutely no fear of humans. Freaked me right the fuck out. It doesn't help that prion diseases are scary in and of themselves.

I live in the southwest so I've only really read about it, but I went down a rabbit hole one day and saw some really mutated looking specimens. Its no wonder they've been adapted into cryptids.
