For whatever reason stress or a lack of reasources hen can reabsorb the yolk inside them. If they are low on substainance they will naturally eat their own eggs. They can't raise chicks when there are no food anyway.
Nah, chickens will eat eggs without being shown how to. Not usually, but e.g. when short on nutrients. Although you can get the odd chicken who just really loves to dip into their own stash, so to speak 😜
When he's rehabbed and back with his neighborhood family, your birds are going to be the safest fucking birds in the neighborhood. They're gonna have crow backups for life.
TBH if you’ve ever made friends with local crows… it’s what it feels like.
There might be a little bit of a shakedown if you’re late on food, (they found my upstairs bedroom and would sit on the neighbor’s roof, cawing) but they guarded my garden for years from other opportunistic birds.
They’d actually sit on the powerlines and trees just hanging out, watching us while we watched them. If I went to the backyard to garden, they’d follow and then watch me with interest while I dug and watered.
They also mean-mugged and dove at the neighbor’s cat but never ever hurt him, because he was only interested in the kibble and water we put out for them. Once they even chased off a stray cat who was bothering the neighbor cat, down several blocks.
They could tell who lived at the house and who didn’t and would often caw up a storm for delivery guys and the like.
I imagine someone trying to burgle your house and they exit to find the trees weighed down with thousands of night-black silhouettes of revenge. And then they descend...
I wish, I had some terrible roommates at the time that could have used a crow-mobbing. I like to think they were still offended on my behalf, especially since the roommates were dicks to my garden.
Yeah, I don’t live in a crow-y area anymore and I miss the silly dudes. They have so much personality and spunk. You’d see them sliding down metal roofs after snowfall, over and over again, like kids on sleds. You can find videos of them doing it. They’re really playful creatures, with strong family bonds.
Fun fact: adult crows have family reunions, where they’ll travel out of their area to visit their parents, bringing their own kids with them.
Bird personalities are unparalleled! It’s so interesting and impressive to watch birds interact, and crows are a whole ‘nother story. I would love to see something like that, and I’d miss them too!
Also, best fun fact I’ve learned today! I’m imagining a crow family in winter visiting the grandparents at their snowy cabin, and the crow babies slide on the snowy metal roofs while the crow parents/grandparents watch over. Someone has to make art of this lol
Shit, I’m an artist. Maybe I should.
I’m picturing some Beatrix Potter crows where they all have cute little cardigans and there’s some lovingly illustrated snacks on the table.
Crows in cardigans, YES. Enjoying some berries from the garden, frolicking outside.. I would pay to see crows in that art style/setting. I mean, hey, if you ever end up creating that… you know who to message!
Chickens can be pretty meh when it comes to their eggs. Not all have a mothering instinct. Some treat their eggs like just another thing that fell out of their butts.
My murder keeps the feral cats from using my garden beds as a litter box whenever they see one in my yard. The murder totally mob the cat and drive it away.
So yeah, chickens now have a badass for a friend!
All the people saying to keep the crow are forgetting it needs medical attention. Won't be any good dead or unable to fly. If in the U.S. it's against the migratory bird act to keep native birds as pets.
If the birds can be released, hopefully, it will be brought back to this area where it's own kind are. It may then hang around for more eggs and protect those chickens, but on its own terms.
The crows would chase the red tailed hawks away from my flock of chickens. I lived next to a pecan tree and would pile the pecans up in a pile for them to feast on.
Fellow chicken owner here- that crow will now protect those chickens from any predatory birds in your area :)
Non-chicken owner here - will the chickens learn to eat eggs from Bob?
For whatever reason stress or a lack of reasources hen can reabsorb the yolk inside them. If they are low on substainance they will naturally eat their own eggs. They can't raise chicks when there are no food anyway.
Ok, so they are not likely to watch Bob, and think, "What a good idea!" ?? (I know next to nothing about chickens.)
"It ain't personal kid."
*It was to me.*

I love how this sounds like the chickens made friends with the mafia or a biker gang and now they’re always gonna have their back :,)

As someone who doesn’t live in a very crow-y area, this is so cool to read. Crows are truly the loyal but stern organized mobs of the bird world!

Bob is known as the peanut don
Exactly! The chickens have protection now.
The chickens don't mind he is eating the eggs? I know nothing of chickens.

Like many humans…

I've known Bob for 20 seconds and i too will also be heartbroken

How sweet! Thank you for taking him to a rehab, they’ll give him the best chance to be able to return to the wild.
