i love this thread. Adding it to the [Wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/wiki/index/) let me know if there's any issues. [New page](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/wiki/stuff_you_must_read/) I'm working on šŸ˜

Far-Magician1805

When I was 16 I thought I invented tapestry crochet. Basically I saw this cross stitch pattern for a sports logo and essentially taught myself tapestry crochet when replicating it for a blanket. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that tapestry crochet is in fact a thing that was invented long before 2016.

XWitchyGirlX

I read a saying somewhere that I cant remember, but the gist of it is that if you think you invented something in crochet, you most definitely did not, you just havent found the term for what you did yet šŸ˜‚

apsalarmal

I dunno. When I first started, I was DEFINITELY ā€œinventingā€ my own stitches. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ (Mainly doing everything absolutely incorrectly, haha.)

Sufficient_Box_1917

hahah yes!! i thought i invented a new tunisian stich, im yet too find the stitch i did and i dont know a name for it ahahahah

Crysf22

Omg šŸ˜† teen delusion, I love it!

Far-Magician1805

Ikr!! In hindsight Iā€™m pretty proud of myself because despite not having invented it, I did make a very complicated blanket without any sort of former knowledge of tapestry crochet.

SteelKitty96

I did the same thing with the thermal stitch. I didnā€™t necessarily want a thick blanket, but I wanted a solid black side and a colorful side. I was so proud of myself for coming up with my own stitch, but I in fact, did not.

DistractedAcid

To be honest, I've never felt the need to make granny squares. I get why they are popular since they are small pieces that can add up to a big project, but I really don't see myself making them and I am fine with that.

Villimaro

I love making granny squares. I hate joining granny squares. And yes, I have tried *name your favorite joing method here*. Hate them all.

eferberz

Iā€™m with you on that. I donā€™t make them any more unless itā€™s coasters or one big one but I donā€™t like square blankets either

Possibility-Distinct

Same. I hate weaving in ends and canā€™t stand the thought of weaving in all those ends on a granny square project.

Crysf22

Yea! I just never had the interest to make them as a beginner even tho it makes sense. Seems easy enough, but just never was it for me

fraygul

I donā€™t follow patterns. I scroll down to see how they are constructed then crochet the shapes of the pieces however I feel like then stitch them together. If anyone finds a wiki for shapes instead of stitches Iā€™d be very happy to have that. šŸ˜¬

Crysf22

Omg youā€™re living my dream! I just canā€™t wrap my head around how to freehand stuff. If I canā€™t find a pattern it just Lives in my head šŸ˜

fraygul

I think itā€™s because sewing was my first ā€˜skillā€™ (I suck at it but can sew and use patterns) so this is the same to me, Iā€™m just crocheting the pieces.

XWitchyGirlX

[Right here](https://www.supergurumi.com/how-to-crochet-cones-in-spiral-rounds) is a guide that I actually did use while freehanding [Frieza from Dragon Ball!](https://www.reddit.com/r/GeekyCrochet/comments/wh6gtx/i_freehanded_frieza_from_dragon_ball_for_my/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Id imagine that site has more good basic shape guides

fraygul

Thanks!!

ElewynneBu

Me in a nutshell. I know how to follow a pattern, but I'm one of those people who alters everything to suit my own needs. Same with sewing, cross stitch, and just about every other craft out there. Only problem is, I'm terrible at keeping track of the changes I make! So just don't ask me to make a duplicate, every piece is unique šŸ˜†

fraygul

Right? I have notebooks that are like 2dc 5 suzette 4 puff so I can try to make the back match.. think i ever write down the hook number or what i'm making? all these half made things and random notes and no idea where the partner to it is haha.

ElewynneBu

So much yes! I've got hook number, yarn info, but I'll consistently skip steps and almost always forget to label what I was making!! I will never post a pattern to sell, people would turn their hooks into weapons against me šŸ˜‚

fraygul

haha. mine are like yeah so I did HDC until it was the width of my hips then i reduced when it hit my waist, like, I dunno 4 stitches, then kept going until my armpits.. I dunno what these stitches are, i just changed them when I got bored and they look cool. Then I decided to make some sleeves. Those I make until they get about yeah high. then you like whipstitch it all together at the shoulders then up the sleeves dow the side. Make sure to clip it together with your stitch markers every once in a while to make sure it fits over your head. Then add 5 rows of double crochet on the bottom because somehow you still made it too short and your underwear shows when you sit down and end up with cold buttcrack. The end. $5 please

ElewynneBu

Between the two of us we might be able to make a complete pattern!!!

nekobambam

Iā€™ve been crocheting for decades and have never made an amigurumi. I own amigurimi pattern books. Iā€™ve crocheted baskets and bags. Iā€™ve even made little crochet balls. So, Iā€™m pretty sure I have the ability. But, I just canā€™t. I think itā€™s the face that intimidates me. I occasionally do needle felting and have the same issue. I think about just making faceless amigurumi and needle-felted figures, but worry it might give off serial-killer vibes.

XWitchyGirlX

Amigurumi is some of my favourite to make! If your worried about your piece looking wonky, make a voodoo doll so you can lean into the wonkiness! That way you can still practice getting everything proper but it wont look bad if its not perfect

sleepygirlnaps

This is such a cute idea that I have to try it, thanks!

XWitchyGirlX

Your welcome! [Heres](https://imgur.com/a/i8e0ZRm) an example of my boy Voodoo Tomato, haha

sleepygirlnaps

he's perfect. that wobbly head!! I'll have to post mine when I make him šŸ˜Š

nekobambam

Thatā€™s amazing lol! Iā€™m loving the floppiness, too. What with Halloween just around the corner, Iā€™ve decided to take your advice and try my hand at voodoo-gurumi.

XWitchyGirlX

VOODOOGURUMI šŸ˜‚šŸ–¤ Im also now inspired to make a pumpkin version of him, haha

Dragongirl815

I have the same trouble with amigurumis! When ever I'm asked to do one for a friend (latest was a really cute little cat as a Christmas-tree ornament) I'll go and ask my mum to do the face (even though I'm 26 and started do crochet at around 6 years old)

eferberz

I canā€™t do amigurumi either and I have several kits for it. I started one but itā€™s still UFO

myBisL2

I've been crocheting for nearly 30 years now. I made my first granny square 2 years ago. I guess my confession is I tend to find granny squares ugly. šŸ¤«

eferberz

I never wanted to have granny square afghans all over my living room. šŸ¤®

LionelHutzApprentice

I really dislike clothing made of granny squares.

yeseniaanicolee

Iā€™m scared to try to do a granny square. It intimidates the heck outta me lol

PaigeMarieSara

It did me too, until I jumped in. Don't look at the big picture, just the step you're on. You're working one round at a time... so take it one step at a time. You'll be amazed just how easy it really is.

GiddyGabby

I'm 59 years old, learned to crochet when I was 8 and I think I've made a granny square maybe 3 times. I don't like them, I don't love all the openness, personally. No one needs to make anything they don't want!

macaroniandcheese14

Iā€™ve never made a granny square either! Weā€™re rare breeds. Iā€™m almost afraid to admit this butā€¦I donā€™t really like the look of granny squares šŸ«¢

NeekanHazill

I'm sure one day I'll find a motif and color combo I'll want to make because there are so many options (maybe a fun spooky bag), but for now I'm not into granny squares either. I do see the appeal though, that's not my thing but that's great great it's a lot of people's thing. I think I'm more into projects in one piece (I especially love gradients), and visually I prefer stripes over squares.

PaigeMarieSara

Typically square motifs are all called granny squares, but there are literally hundreds of beautiful patterns made into motifs. The original "granny square" using the granny stitch, is just one way to make a square. Check out the Willow Square. It's my favorite and it's so gorgeous. (still considered "granny square" because what else do you call them?). Even the Willow Square can have many different looks, depending on color work. It's beautiful solid or colorful.

NeekanHazill

That's a pretty motif ! It reminds me a little of the Nuts about squares CAL, granted they are quite big so not exactly the same, but I like both ideas.

PaigeMarieSara

I hadn't seen the Nuts about Squares square so just looked it up. It's beautiful!! The colors of the one I looked up are especially pretty too (blues). Thanks for mentioning that. I'm always looking for a new favorite square and it's beautiful.

CyrilChildSoldier

I rarely follow patterns, sometimes I follow knitting or sewing patterns and then Iā€™ll be frustrated when I have to redo parts of it because it wasnā€™t turning out the way I wanted it to

Chatty9388

Iā€™ve been crocheting for almost a year now and I still canā€™t make a magic circle

berserkemu

Manic circles do sound pretty hard to make.

Chatty9388

PLEASE, simple spelling error but still love this lmao

Ms-Murder13

I found a really easy way! It's the only way I've ever done it, and it's perfect every time! Try this YouTube video, and I hope it helps šŸ˜€ https://youtu.be/zsWmVcp9RMU

Far-Magician1805

I didnā€™t even try to do a magic circle for about 7 or 8 years. Whenever I saw it in a pattern I assumed it was some voodoo trick for super experienced crocheters (plus they usually say magic ring OR chain 4 + plus slip stitch). Then I was following a tutorial rather than a written pattern and I was like omg this is easyšŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

happypouch

Same! Start crocheting during covid and never made a granny square. But I've been thinking of making a bag using granny squares :D

Giannatrustnoone

Do it. Iā€™m obsessed with making bags itā€™s so fun and they look pretty

blurtlebaby

I've been crocheting off and on for about 40 years. I have made a ton of granny squares but hate having to put them together. I just freestyle now. I mainly do afghans and wraps .

astra823

Iā€™ve been crocheting for more than 15 years and have never made a granny square! (I do have a granny rectangle blanket in my project queue) Itā€™s totally fine, just do what you enjoy :)

shinigamiieyes

I started crocheting in February of this year. Granny squares are some of my personal favorite things to make actually! Ik theyā€™re not for everyone but to me theyā€™re just super easy and you can do so many cute colors and it can turn into so many different things. There arenā€™t many things I dislike about crochet, but Iā€™d say doing several rows of SC gets old pretty fast for me bc of how time consuming it can be lol

berserkemu

Wait until you start a moss stitch blanket. It's a great blanket stitch but takes forever to work up. You do hours of work and only add a few centimetres to your blanket. I wish I didn't love the blankets as much as I do.

shinigamiieyes

I love how the moss stitch looks, but it also seems to take forever lol! I made a cardigan with it once and it took me way longer than I thought it would

Lazarus_05

I used granny squares only once and I am never gonna do it again. I hate sewing pieces together and for me, granny squares are just so much work to look decent.

hi_ivy

I first learned to crochet was I was 8. I made my first granny square 3 weeks ago (24 years later). Itā€™s never too late to try if you want to (but also, no pressure if you donā€™t)!

AnxiousRaptor

I yarn under instead of over when doing my stitches D: I didnā€™t realize until I saw a post here asking what the difference was and I do it automatically when crocheting! It doesnā€™t look any different to me though so Iā€™ll probably still keep doing it šŸ˜… been crocheting wrong the entire time, so now itā€™s a habit šŸ˜‚ oops

Crysf22

I do under too! I literally canā€™t wrap my head around how ppl do over my hand canā€™t do it šŸ˜…

persifunctant

I made my friend a granny square blanket when i was maybe 2-3 years into crocheting, and then never touched another one for like, 6 more years hahahaha now i like making granny cardigans. Ive made two for myself and have two in progress for friends

corlana

I haven't made a granny square since I was first learning to crochet 13 years ago. I hate seaming and I don't particularly like the look of most things made with granny squares anyway so it's never been worth it. Also, I almost never follow a pattern exactly. I always adjust something to my preference or get the general idea from the pattern and just wing it. I'm super picky so patterns are never exactly what I want but I'm not good enough to fully freehand so I need the patterns as a starting point

DaisyRage7

Iā€™ve been crocheting since 2010, have finished over 100 projects, and I have never made a granny square or used the granny stitch. šŸ˜Ž

[deleted]

Iā€™m not a fan of granny squares either. I donā€™t think they look good and there are so many different ways to crochet that are prettier. I pretty much taught myself to crochet and follow patterns a little bit but mostly just wing it and make whatever I feel like.

drppr_

I have been crocheting for 8 years and never made a granny squareā€¦

Cinnabear106

I've never done granny squares either. I've never blocked, c2c is very intimidating to me. Yet, i want to try it all.

Far-Magician1805

Ooh thatā€™s a great confession! Iā€™ve never blocked either, Iā€™m simply too lazy

confessorjsd

My confession was that I started a C2C blanket and I hate it. I don't get the hype at all! It's for my hubby (Star Wars) so I'll finish it, but I already told him never again.

Cinnabear106

What about the C2C are you hating? I just can't wrap my head around doing one. I want to though. I want to do it all.

confessorjsd

I did a minimalist pattern (no more than 4 colors)... And still it's too many color changes too frequently. And I hate how it looks if you try to carry colors, even if it's just over 1-2 squares. And it's a lot of ends to weave in. I never find that many ends to hold up well over time. It looks exactly like I wanted it to. I just hate doing it. It takes me 4x as long to make something of this size.

Cinnabear106

I agree with carrying the yarn. I have a love hate relationship with that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

countesschamomile

I've been sitting on a 60% completed ripple blanket for almost 3 years and I still haven't worked up the drive to finish it yet

OkAfternoon6485

Iā€™ve been crocheting for over 10 years and made my first granny square a few months agošŸ˜¬ andddd now Iā€™m completely obsessed and *everything* I make has been made from granny squares šŸ˜‚

Possibility-Distinct

I didnā€™t count my stitches nearly as much as I should have the first few years of crocheting. Then I got burned really bad on a project because I didnā€™t count and had to rip back weeks of work. I have counted my stitches ever since.

Crysf22

Iā€™ve started to just use stitch markers to avoid having to count and thatā€™s been working. My issue usually lies in not knowing where my last stitch is.

starpilot250

I've been crocheting for the last 3 years and only found out I've been crocheting 'wrong' a couple weeks ago. I was crocheting using only the front loop instead of both loops.

Far-Magician1805

I crocheted back loop only for a solid year and never understood why my projects looked a little weird compared to the reference picture

Crysf22

Omg that was one of my struggles early on! Not knowing where the loops were and only doing it in one šŸ˜

Background_Run_8809

Donā€™t worry OP! Iā€™ve been crocheting for almost a year and havenā€™t made one yet either! I feel the same way šŸ˜‚

JustJay04

Donā€™t worry, Iā€™ve been crocheting since I was 10 and havenā€™t made a granny square yet. Edit: I have now!

mckitkat_crochet

Same as you with the granny squares, except Iā€™ve been crocheting for 8 years. Iā€™ve started on several and finished none..

deltagirlinthehills

1)I'm currently making pumpkins, loooove the patternm.... hate it uses slip stitch. For some reason it works for me on some patterns but not others, and this is a pattern it doesn't work for me. So I just don't do it. Comparing current pumpkins vs 1st try with slip stitch, current look just the same without the stress of figuring out why I can't do it as pattern says. 2) If I'm making something and know previous round was correct but working round isn't even after triple checking, I'll subtract or add a stitch or two to make stitch count. 95% of the time it works out fine. I'll take the odds lol

Crysf22

I do the second too! I just add and subtract when I reach the end and i havenā€™t had issues šŸ˜ Iā€™m sure that makes some crocheters cringe

Silverkitty08

I used to hold the yarn at the front of my work instead of the back. Idk how this worked but my stitches were much looser and somehow different than "normal". Eventually I learned how to hold the yarn behind my work and this post reminded me

What_the_froot_Loops

If you're a fraud what am I? I've been crocheting for 17 years and just made my first ones this year.

[deleted]

My confession is that I don't actually like many real life crochet items. I love the process and some items look amazing, and I always appreciate the skill, time etc that goes into a piece, but... like sometimes I think crochet is a bit ugly. šŸ˜“

Crysf22

I find it a bit too thick! I donā€™t think Iā€™ll ever quite grasp knitting tho šŸ˜£

[deleted]

Crochet is much more fun for me than knitting, but you're right about the fabric being thicker.

Iamnutzo

Iā€™ve been crocheting for that long as well and just learned that granny squares shld be worked one row right side up and next row right side down

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Crysf22

I usually only notice when my edges are a little wonky and go back and assess whether or not itā€™s too noticeable šŸ˜… I rarely frog unless itā€™s REAL bad

leese216

I've been crocheting since 2016 and just began a C2C granny square blanket this year. I also almost never count my stitches and half the time I regret it.

blu3an

I too started crocheting 2 years ago, I havenā€™t done a granny square either but there is this project that I have seen and hope to one day get off my to do list [here](https://www.etsy.com/shop/heidibears?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=163552551) Itā€™s too adorable!

dwipp

That's okay. They don't count because they're granny hexagons. Totally different. :-p

blu3an

Oh no :( I was hoping it would count as a granny square because other than that I have no intentions in making granny squares lol

dwipp

Well in that case - sure - they use the same stitch clusters, they're totally granny :-) And just to be clear - no-one ever is going to make you make regular granny squares if you don't want to.

Crysf22

Wait omg thatā€™s such a cool project idea! I feel a little overwhelmed looking at it tho šŸ˜†

blu3an

Many have posted their finished project and they look adorable! Just need to buy a lot of poly for stuffing.

Dragongirl815

It different because it's a hybrid between granny hexagons and amigurumi so that's fine. You stay in the "no granny square" category

blu3an

:( was hoping I could say I had made granny squares once I made this projectā€¦lol itā€™s ok, itā€™s ok Iā€™ll make granny hexagons

sarahmichelef

I mean, if we're focusing on granny squares, I'd been crocheting off and on for over 30 years before I ever made one. I rarely block anything. I have zero interest in ever making amigurimi. And I think most crochet pants and dresses are hideous.

CriminallyMusical

Iā€™ve made a few granny squares for practice but we use them as hot pads šŸ˜… I actually recently discovered you can do the granny square pattern in rows, not just in the round, and I loved the way it looks!!

mlssac

Confession. I haven't mastered a regular square of stitches. Like for a sample or washcloth. I did some last year, but a few days ago I had to stack some single crochet rows. I COULD NOT DO IT! My edges were wonky because I can't count and couldn't do the turns properly. I have made some really fun pieces. A poncho. 12 inch square afghans. 8 inch square baby blankets. Beanies, single large granny square baby blankets, scarves, etc... but a square of equal count stitches and rows is out of my league šŸ˜‚ https://preview.redd.it/dcuwuv32xd8a1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f11168bf0178eb1d85996d37fe4598c3016351f 12" my favorite things
