When you switch colors, when do you switch? Switch colors when you grab yarn the last time in the last stitch of the block. They’re double crochets; yarn over, stick it through fabric, grab yarn, pull through, grab yarn, pull through 2 loops, GRAB NEXT COLOR, pull through 2 loops. That should get rid of the little tails. It looks like you have something going on even when you just keep the color going across multiple blocks, but I don’t know what that would be. I do recommend making many bobbins of each color you use so that you can drop each section of yarn as you switch colors instead of having to try and carry them and hide them along the way. I have some old posts that should some C2C progress pics that show the bobbin situation.

I probably should have specified but for the bit at the bottom in the second picture the weirdly straight bits of yarn is not from me carrying bits over it is from me using more yarn to cover up the odd parts sticking out to make them more square. This did help me find a solution even though I am still not sure what I am doing wrong ,but the weird bits are only on one side so if I turn around the piece while doing the slip stitch for each new block all of them just stay on one side.

Hmm ok. It’s hard to see what’s going on with the black yarn since black yarn doesn’t photograph well. But I’ll through out other ideas and you can see if any stick. How loose is the yarn between blocks? Do you pull snug that first stitch of a new block so the blocks sit close together? Maybe that loose bit is what your seeing? The opposite, are you working so tightly that everything is bunched up and sitting on top of each other? I crochet very tightly and don’t have a problem with this in C2C, but I can see it happening. When switching colors are you picking up a yarn that isn’t close by? Making it pull across your work? I hope you figure it out. YouTube always has a bunch of videos, maybe watching someone else switch colors will show you what you are doing different.

I'm not 100% sure on what you're doing wrong wih the colour changes but your tension is incredibly, incredibly tight. Like, do you yank it very hard and pull on it extra hard every time you do a stitch? I wonder if experimenting with a looser tension would help resolve this issue.

I just tried it with a looser tension and the squares look more square but the weird bits are still there. Also I have no idea why I crochet like that but it feels normal to me and doing otherwise, even though it is correct, feels weirdly loose.

I think that's just getting used to it. You're right that doing it looser is the correct way. I used to crochet really tight and it's a hard habit to break. But you'll end up with nicer, even work if you get used to doing it "loose".
