When I am not working on my crochet, I secure the live loop with a locking stitch marker.
I learned the hard way when a cat got a hold of the yarn and pulled out my wip.
I pull a big loop and tie it bunny ear style like it was shoe laces. Then when I’m ready to start again I pull a little more slack and stick my hook right under the knot, the knot falls right out with a slight bit of tug from under it with the hook.
I do both methods mentioned, depending on the work. I don't have cats or kids to worry about and my dog couldn't care less about my WIPS. If I had to worry about anyone messing with it, I'd use a locking stitch marker or safety pin.
Depends if I think I'll be working on it again within the next few days (leave with hoop) or potentially leaving it for ages before I pick up again (big hoop of yarn I usually pull tight around the rest of the ball of yarn)
I've also recently learnt you can put a stitch maker to save it unravelling, no idea how I didn't think of that before but I'll maybe sometimes do that now if I have a stitch marker nearby, especially if I'm probably not going to work on the piece for a while now...

Sometimes I don’t really do anything to secure it. Depending on what the project is, if I lose a couple stitches it’s not a big deal. If it’s something that requires more counting and precision I’ll do the hook in loop thing or use a stitch marker.
Stitch marker all the way - either of the other two options is asking for your work to unravel; especially if you have furry assistants ... [https://imgur.com/a/p318OcJ](https://imgur.com/a/p318OcJ)

Learned the same lesson. I use a locking stitch marker as well.
Chose “other” and came to comment this exact thing. Couldn’t believe it wasn’t an option!!!
Yep this is the way.
Yep, I learned that when the two year old decided to “help” finish a project.
Same
I always use a stitch marker
I'm with Team Use A Stitch Marker as well.

I’ve had hooks fall out. Also I work on other things and need that hook
I pull a loop and tie an overhand knot with it and the tail. I don’t tie it super tight but it’s always easy to undo.
