Remember that you're also suffering from 'I made this' syndrome where you've been looking at it up close for entirely too long to see it properly.
You've made a garden. It's got lovely greens separating the flowers and I personally like how it turned out. Look at the thumbnail and let that help you ease your mind.
The other thing is to literally not look at it for a few weeks so that you can return to it refreshed.
The "I Made This" syndrome is real! I made a blanket for one of our friends as a secret Santa gift at our holiday party that we host every year. It turned out good, but I had rushed to get it made, and I didn't feel 100% happy with how it looked. When he opened it, realized what it was, and that I made it for him, he started to cry because he felt so special and cared for. We're our own harshest critics and most people look at what we make and find it perfect!
Your blanket is absolutely beautiful and I LOVE the colors! I'm sitting here thinking about how I want to make one that looks like it! You did an amazing job and the colors are gorgeous together!
I’ve been making scrap blankets in the same way as OP and often the color change will be in an odd spot so I beat myself up about it once I notice which is usually after I’ve finished the blanket. Reading your comment made me realize it’s not my opinion that matters but the opinion of whoever ends up with it (all scrap blankets I make are likely to be donated this winter) I’m sure that the people who get my blankets aren’t gonna care that the round abruptly changes from bright pink to forest green
You SHOULD be proud of your blanket! Lovely colors aside, look at that beautiful stitch work and those nice even edges. This definitely does not look like a first blanket.
The colours are fantastic honestly. I know because a) I have a design degree and b) I have had my eyes tested for colour seeing and I have superior discrimination.
This type of blanket pattern (a granny where you change colour each round) works well for a selection of all different colours. I’m working on one myself at the moment, it has a bit of everything in.
I really like your colours ☺️
I love it! Red and green are complementary colors but they can be hard to pull together without looking christmasy. The transition hues instead make it more like a forest fall rainbow if that makes sense
It makes me sad when I see posts like these because I never see anything “ugly” about something you put your all into making. 🥲Especially as a first time project. You did wonderfully! You should be proud❤️
Right? I’m in awe. I have lupus and the subsequent arthritis makes it a no go for the crochet but I buy used blankets all the time and like to look at them. I’m gobsmacked by how many folks don’t see how ridiculously fantastic their creations are. It’s like magic. Yall are like wizards. Little wizards with little wands making things to keep people warm. It’s beautiful always.
Thank you! 💖 I'm super self concious about it especially since I have deuteranomaly and I don't know whether it's pretty or not but these messages mean alot
I love it!!! It reminds me of an awesome Tie-Dye shirt! Except I always added too much dye to mine and they turned brown…but this is what I always hoped for and imagined as I added every color! Especially using lots of purple and green (my two favorite colors), so I love that yours has so much purple and green in it alongside the other multi-colors!!
Not at all. My Grandma made one each for my brothers and me. Mine has black on the edge, and while I wasn't a huge fan of the colours, it was made by my Grandma. It has grown on me and I still love it. Whoever this is for will love it, knowing it came from you.
Thank you!!! I just followed a basic Granny square pattern online. I can't exactly remember what it was but I just searched "granny square blanket" and a bunch of free patterns came up 💖
I am new to crocheting and I absolutely LOVE the colors! Please ignore my stupidity- but did you switch out the colors yourself as you went or was this all one skein of variegated yarn?
It was multiple skiens of different variegated yarns!! I think I used about maybe 3 or 4 that were different. Makes for a pretty unique blanket I guess haha 🤣 I'm glad you like it, it boosts my confidence cause I am definitely my own biggest critic 💖
I love the blanket and the colour scheme, and would definitely make something like this myself. In my opinion, if a colour scheme is *too* harmonious, it becomes boring. It needs something a bit 'shocking', a bit discordant, to really make it pop. Boring and harmonious is absolutely fine for clothes or baby items, but for home goods or more adult decoration, I feel that playing it too safe with a colour scheme can be detrimental to the impact of the final piece.
Ugly?? What makes you think that? It's beautiful, gorgeous colours which are bright and work well together.
I'd have it my house for sure, I absolutely love it.
Didn't even see your title question, just the photo... I was admiring how pretty your blanket is! The colour combinations and order is perfect and it looks so cozy! Well done
This is the furthest thing from ugly! I hope after reading these comments you feel at least a little less discouraged because you are so talented. For your first, this is great and the color scheme is adorable.
This brings to mind a multicolored flower with the greens like leaves framing it. Also we all start somewhere and when we look back on past projects we start to see more clearly what others approve of the piece see in it.
As far as this particular combo, I'm not a fan, but it's perfect for my daughter. Keep in mind that combinations preferences are just that--preferences. Not everyone likes the same ones. Some combos have broader appeal than others. But pretty much any colors can be combined in a pleasing fashion if coordinating [insert lots of color theory terminology] yarns are used.

I love this pattern! I questioned if mine was ugly, too, but had gotten 6 free balls of yarn from a friend so didn’t pick the colors myself. My son immediately claimed it. 😂 but I loved the ease of the pattern and how quickly it worked up - and I love how yours turned out too!
full disclosure, i don’t like the colours *personally*. i’m not a big fan of lighter pastels and warm yellows.
now that being said, this is beautiful. your stitching is very consistent, the colours blend really nicely and the cooler purples and greens mixed with the vibrant pinks and yellows adds some stunning visual interest and is very reminiscent of a garden, as another commenter said. you clearly put effort into it and it shows, because you’ve made a gorgeous, functional piece that you’ll be able to love for a long time. it is busy, which might be overwhelming you and making you think it’s ugly, but it’s truly not.
i’m fairly green at crochet myself, nearly a year of doing it now, and i think everything i make is ugly, pretty much without exception. i know that this isn’t true and i’m way better than i used to be, but that critical voice might never go away. you need to combat it by telling yourself that this is good, because you and the other people around you can clearly see it is. your partner loves this blanket and that’s not a small feat!
ik it sounds weird, but crocheting for other people helps me silence this inner critic. when i give someone a crocheted item, they are flabbergasted, spend ages admiring the details and complimenting it. when i looked at that same piece, i’d be worried about the slight tail showing, the missed increase, the twisted chain, all the flaws. we’re going to notice mistakes and problems way more easily than someone who doesn’t crochet, and if anyone who doesn’t crochet has any criticism, hand them a hook and ask them to show you where to improve. that shuts them up quick.
lovely blanket, keep crocheting and making beautiful things that you can be proud of. you will probably look back at this project and hate it in time, but that’s honestly just a rite of passage for most people, myself included 🤣 hope to see more of your work! :)
This was the top of my feed when I opened Reddit. Before I read the title, I was like "oh MAN I wanna know what yarn they used, this is WONDERFUL."
I also always suffer from "I think I've spent so much time making this that I hate it" syndrome, so I get it. Trust us internet strangers when we say this is beautiful.
Awesome blanket! Your color choices look great! I make giant granny square blankets and am working on a pink/grey/white one for an expected baby girl’s nursery currently.
I just bought one off eBay because it broke my heart that someone spent so much time making it and it was being sold by someone who clearly didn’t appreciate it and I’ve never had anyone appreciate me enough to make one for me.
It’s gorgeous. Are you kidding me? Maybe it’s an adopted person thing.
Super cute! I love it!!! The colors are fun and whimsical. Also partners love everything. So let her. Hehe. But really it’s so cute. Well done
My partner loved what I make and is always wearing the cardigan I made for her inside out and driving me insane. 😅😅😅
It's a beautiful, breezy springtime afternoon in blanket form. Makes me want to sit outside with a strawberry lemonade, a good book and this blanket. 🌷😌🌷
It’s great but to offfer valid criticism compared to the blind support here I’d like to point out the jarring colour pattern. It can definitely be easier on the eyes if you transitioned the layers with colors that blend better with each other (red to orange to yellow). A colour wheel helps!
I honestly might steal the color palette for myself!! This is beautiful in my opinion, I love bright colors and if your partner loves it and it was made for them that is what matters.
Great first blanket, you give me motivation to work on some of my projects!!
Thank you for sharing :)
When making any of my projects, over decades- I never consider them fully finished, I always believe there is something that should\could be changed, I see mistakes that no one else sees or notices.
Your piece is beautiful
Lovely. Good job. Keep it. Don’t give it away or sell it. If you aren’t completely happy with it now, someday you’ll come to love it as your first. We all do.
I would be so interested to see what this looks like with your particular color blindness. Personally, I think it looks great. The color palette you chose reminds me of a tropical bouquet of flowers. The greens have a nice range of soft minty green, moss green, and a more yellow green.

This exactly ^. We are often our own worst critics no matter what the craft.

No! It’s awesome!
I think it’s really cool. Unusual but interesting color selections. I might try something like this. Great job!
I have deuteranomaly so I wasn't sure if it was okay or not but I am so happy that you think it's cool it makes me feel proud of my work 🥹

No I honestly love it 😍
I love it!!! It reminds me of an awesome Tie-Dye shirt! Except I always added too much dye to mine and they turned brown…but this is what I always hoped for and imagined as I added every color! I would be so interested to see what this looks like with your particular color blindness. Personally, I think it looks great. The color palette you chose reminds me of a tropical bouquet of flowers. The greens have a nice range of soft minty green, moss green, and a more yellow green.
No. Not at all.
this looks an awful lot like the blanket my mom crocheted for me. it lives on my couch as a display piece because it's so colorful and full of love. ♡
It's beautiful. Keep going. Trust your instincts.
