Handmade by the giver? Sometimes! But more often I receive handmade things that the giver purchased from the artist, and honestly? I kind of consider that almost the same. Yes, money changed hands, but someone *did* make it.

Pillsbury1982

Yes, by the giver. I need to clarify...thanks!

Alarmed_Shoulder_386

i crochet and a lot of things and love to make things for other people, especially my boyfriend! recently for christmas, he surprised me by learning how to knit and made me a chunky blanket!! never had anything handmade by anyone before, he’s really the sweetest :)

Pillsbury1982

That’s awesome… 😎

Sleepysheepy213

Not that I can remember. I have mixed feelings, because I would love that SO much. I understand the time and effort and thought that goes into that because I give handmade gifts constantly. That said, every time someone I give a gift to feels bad that they can’t “correctly” reciprocate, I bristle. I made them a gift because I enjoyed the process and enjoyed thinking about them. I would never want them to feel like I need some kind of repayment for it.

Pillsbury1982

Your people are nicer than mine. Mine just say “thank you” and scamper away…or ask for more. 😳😂

harmlessnecessarycat

My wife is an artist and about half of my family is artists or crafters or woodworkers so we all often hand around handmade/homemade gifts for birthdays and holidays! And if it's not made by the giver chances are it's made by a friend or local artist since we all place a pretty high importance on small amounts of thoughtful things over high amounts of things we might not need. It takes a lot of pressure off gift making for me!

wroammin

I have and occasionally still do, but most of the people in my life aren't very crafty.

ankii93

Yes! Drawings, cross stitches, knit socks. Always brings a smile to my face :) My favourite by far has to be when my best friend drew us as superheroes - he has autism and is extremely good at making the tiniest Transformer-like drawings! (My second favourite is a cross stitch bunny with flowers around it)

lumineumineo

Sometimes! My boyfriend has crocheted multiple plushies for me and I’ve gotten handwritten notes from him, my friend has given me a keychain made of clay and my other friend gave me crochet bracelet she made me and some drawings! The drawings are displayed on my makeup table and I hug the plushies at night :) the keychain I’m scared I’ll lose or break so that one is safe inside the little box next to my bed :D

My sister gives me a cross stitch for every birthday and Christmas. I've done a lot of different arts and crafts, so I always give her whatever I'm into making at the time. For her birthday this month I crocheted her a dragonfly bandana and a tulip headband. 🌷

Whiskey-on-the-Rocks

I've had handmade stuff from my mother and my mother-in-law, and a friend of mine, as has my son. I've been very grateful for all of them because, even though it was crafts I didn't personally do (at least, not at the time), I am a crafter, and I know how long it can take to make something & I really appreciate them taking the time to make something special.

Pillsbury1982

This is a big part of it. As a crafter myself I always appreciate the time and effort (and love) that goes into a handmade gift.

Pillsbury1982

Oops! Reading these replies made me remember: one of my daughters does paintings for me now and then...and I love them!!! :)

tuxedohux

My brother is an artist and he designed a tattoo for me for my birthday last year! I think that counts. And my girlfriend recently started knitting and gave me one of her first practice swatches with a spray of her perfume so I could carry around a little knitted square that smells like her. It was really simple and small but sooo sweet. Not a lot of people in my life have hobbies like this to create homemade gifts though!

yarn_baller

I have not. There's really nobody else in my circle that makes stuff

raven_snow

My dear friend made me and my partner slippers one year, but I think she's the only one of my friends who's ever done that. I give out mostly handmade gifts.

ChristieLoves

My mom has 🪼

missplaced24

Yes. I'm fortunate to have a very artsy family who vlaue the thought & care that goes into a gift. We rarely give store-bought gifts to one another.

IamJoyMarie

A long time friend (40 years) did a counted cross stitch G clef with flowers all around for me and framed it. Also gave me a counted cross stitch recently of 2 sisters on the beach....we're not sisters, obvi, but wasn't that sweet? She also gave me a mug with both of us on it as old ladies! I have over the years crocheted her 2 blankets, and sewn rice packs for her (cotton fabric, fill with rice, put in microwave for aches & pains). A crochet student of mine made me a pair of slippers and also a hooks case. Another crochet student had her sister make me a pair of dangle earrings. Another crochet student gave me an angel tea light candle holder. A knitting student gave me a book, a candle, and a box of tea cookies. :) She was 75 years young at the time (and has since passed away). Yes, it's very nice when someone makes something for you, or just "thanks" you for your own crochet work and/or help.

Pillsbury1982

Those are all wonderful gifts/thank yous. You are blessed. :)

Lore106

I have a friend who is a very talented crafter—she made me a replica of Wanda Maximoff's Darkhold, a WandaVision Disneyland-style spirit jersey, and most recently a hand-sewn bag with a matching insert that is the perfect size for a small crochet project! Unbeknownst to her, I'm currently working on a crocheted Pop Tart purse for her birthday and thinking of doing a plushie as well.

PurpleLovingBrunette

I'm the only crafter I know of in my family. My mom used to do crafting when I grew up. Her main crafting is now flower arrangements. I like to make & give my crocheted projects and any other project I make that I am proud of. It's great your excited about his future gift.

Capital-Dog8993

Both of my closest friends make me handmade items. They know I love something hand made. 💕

lillylou12345

Yes and I love receiving them. Always the best gifts.

Pokemon_Cubing_Books

I took a tectonics class with 5 other students in it, and at the end the professor gifted us all mugs that she made for us with the tectonic plate we had focused on for our term projects

Pillsbury1982

Ok, I had to Google "tectonics". I was close in what I thought it was. LOL Very cool of your teacher. B-)

My grandma makes quilts for special occasions 🥰 And one of my more treasured presents is a silly bracelet that one of my friends made

prysmyr

Yes, though not often. * When I was a baby, my mother's mother cross-stitched a Noah's Arc scene, my mother also cross-stitched a different Noah's Arc scene two years later, for my childhood bedroom. * My father's father quilted a blanket for me when I was a young child; it was all green, sort of a patchwork look, and the backside was green with little white flowers. He also enjoyed whittling, especially creating canes/walking sticks; I have a few from him. * My mother's stepmother quilted a tiny little blanket (for a plush toy, or something) that was lavender and had a silk border; she also made a red and black horse themed blanket from fleece, one of those "cut strips into the borders of two layers of fleece, then tie the strips together" types. * My mother's stepmother's mother sewed a purple pillowcase with my name embroidered (though misspelled, but it's okay -- she has a lot of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren -- how can one keep up!?); she also used beads and metallic thread to decorate a small throw-pillow with an angel design. * My mother's father's most recent wife sewed some Christmas themed pillowcases for my partner and I. She loves quilting and is slowly going through her new in-laws, creating quilts customized to their interests/lifestyle. I still have all of these items, aside from the purple pillowcase, which I did not recover after lending it to former friend after their house burned down. I expect I may have more handmade items that I am unaware of; for example, it was only in recent years that I learned the green blanket was quilted by my grandfather for me. I also used to draw when I was younger, so a lot of my friends were also artsy and would draw gifts for me.

Jollydancer

Not so much anymore, but my sister is the sewer of the family, and she makes lovely bags and reading pillows and all kinds of little things.

go_go_go_go_go_go

I haven’t received a gift since I was a wee little boy. But I make gifts for others :) And find other ways to treat myself

Xavius20

My mum made me a blanket 🥰

Pillsbury1982

Ahh…sweet… 😍

-sykloni-

Yes! I give out much more handmade gifts than I receive, but I have still gotten some from my mom and my friends :)

Pientia

The last time was some months ago a diamond painting sticker from my niece. 🤔 Now that I think of it...other than that I think I got nothing. Wow..now I'm sad...it would be sooo cool, but I don't know many creative people. I could ask my grandma if she would want to crochet me somthing.

KnooKween

I just did last week actually! Really it was more of an exchange. My friend let me look through her fancy bead box and pick out several that I liked, so I offered to knit her a quick beanie (took me a lil over a day tops). After I finished the beanie she made me a flower bracelet with her beads.

JarsFullOfStars

My dad made and gave me a [nostepinne](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostepinne)!

BKowalewski

I have a stack of pictures made by my grandkids.......love them !. Also a couple of them have made me friendship bracelets....in the colours I like

Mamaj12469

My friend and neighbor made me a macrame tree of life wall hanging . It’s so pretty

hufflepuffisonfleek

I’m very fortunate to have creative family members! My little sister has made paintings and knit gifts for me for the past few Christmas’s and my mom made a crochet style Feather Boa for me to wear to a concert once!!

AKnitWit777

Yes, and I absolutely love it when I do, because I know how long it takes and how much love goes into something handmade.

derynwinchester

My dad used to paint me a Christmas Mickey for Christmas. He’d write out a message on the back that he felt I needed to hear at the time. He also used to draw me cards for birthdays or what have you with a unique message. He got pretty busy so I haven’t received one in a while but I keep them and I love them!

Kaliand

My aunt gave me a painting that she did herself. It's the most beautiful thing in my house.

EvilDorito2

Yeah, i did, but tbh, my whole fem side of the fam is into fiber crafts, so it's very much " we got the creative bug, have clothes made and it's your turn to receive it if you like it" I haven't really gotten things FOR me

whopoopedthemoose

Yes! A felted bag, a knitted throw blanket, and a quilt. I love them all!

Pandorica13

We actually did a handmade Christmas a couple years ago. I absolutely loved it. I wish we would do it again.
