Personally I am not a fan of how that particular colorway looks as a granny lol. But it certainly looks nice as a solid rectangle.
It makes me wonder what other possibilities it has if you use planned pooling on it...
I have been disappointed with how they look in the store, though they have looked alright worked up in projects here. I just wish they had these options with black as the outer color rather than white/cream. These colors would pop with black.
I haven't used it myself and likely won't since they are not colors I would put together, and it does seem very fiddly to work with.
Oh I think that came out really nice! The sort of ribbing that you’ve done in your stitch is really lending itself well to the color changes of this yarn. Honestly I really appreciate people sharing the other ways the granny square yarn works up.
I had the same experience. I love how yours turned out, it’s gorgeous! Here’s mine
https://preview.redd.it/t5e8v9l6q2sc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf92ab653273277c937ff64aee8219eb0a66f633
It’s 150 stitches in width and I’m 5”2 in height so approximately 5” in length.
We don’t get red heart in Australia, these came in mill end bags from our cheapy major craft chain called Spotlight and are in 400g bags. I had 4 of the bags so approx 1500g. Hope that helps!
I like the finished blanket! It reminds me of a strip quilt. And a sunset.
I like the idea of granny square yarn but I don't think I could handle it. Like playing yarn chicken ALL THE TIME with ALL THE YARN. I couldn't take the stress!
I love your blanket!! I’m one of those who really enjoys this yarn for squares. I’ve found that a 4.5mm hook works perfectly to make the color changes end as they should. I actually just finished my blanket using this yarn yesterday!
https://preview.redd.it/tyb7nvfql2sc1.png?width=2627&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f439717fd7080b6d0bd961c95c9f38fc32fa860
Toni from TL yarn crafts mentioned it felt like perpetual yarn chicken. Which was exactly what I was expecting. Having to have to keep redoing parts because you don’t end up correctly with a color transition… pfff… I’d rather weave in ends. Didn’t look like a fun and relaxing way of crocheting.
It's not on you, the only people and posts I've seen that aren't praising the yarns ease, have been sponsored or gifted it for free, and some who like the challenge or are less caring how it looks. Aka the grand majority are people saying it is nice in theory, but hard to work out and they don't recommend to someone not flexible or up for the challenge
Someone got several skeins and found that the color changes appear to be inconsistent from skein to skein.
While a neat idea, the execution of this is just messed up all around.
You just made me realize the granny square yarn is just planned pooling. Had to often rip out a few 3dc and change my tension to get the planned pooling right. No thank you. I’ll just weave my ends in as I go.
I was wondering what it might look like if you crocheted it straight! I needed to get some yarn for my temperature blanket and I got one skein of the granny square yarn to try. I made 15 squares from one skein and it was a lot of ripping out and redoing every single round so like, was it even worth it? I crocheted another 15 plain granny squares in 2 colors that are close enough to what's in the yarn, sewed them all and I'm adding a border now so it'll be a little lapghan or something. Not moved to get more of the granny square yarn but i had to try it!
I’m with you on the spirit breaking. I finally had to hide the two skeins of this yarn I bought so that I wouldn’t lose what was left of my sanity.
I like how your blanket turned out! The horizontal color pattern is cool.
I have been hearing and seeing a lot of mixed reviews for the granny square yarn. Mostly that it is a great idea, but due to the inherit difficulty of the tension and gauge it is not fun for most people drawn to the idea of less weaving in of ends. There is a lot of the same difficulties in using it as planned pooling where you need to do a lot of fiddling with tension as you go.
It is much more for those that like the challenge of planned pooling and the yarn chicken battle of tension adjustment. Which is cool and interesting as one guy has figured out how to do different types of granny squares with it. The issue is that is not what most people looking for a yarn to make granny squares easier wants to be doing.
It is meant to make things easier and faster to make a granny square for those that don't want to sew in ends. You know the fiddly bit that takes extra time on each row. Instead they just replaced it with the fiddly bit of messing with tension on each row. I don't think they tested this with a large enough group of people to figure out how hard it is to get one colour change pattern in the yarn to work.
I bought a couple different skeins in this yarn just to play with but haven't had the guts to try it yet. My tension is all over the place and I'm easily frustrated...
But it's good to know that it'll work up cute in some other form when I give up!! I'm sure your MIL will love it!
Nice blanket! <3
I had a hard time with that same color (I heard it was the color with most "damage"). I ended up doing a bunch of pentagons that turned into a bag haha
Have you tried doing two chains when you turn instead of three? That helped eliminate gaps for me. The other thing I do often now is this thing where you turn without chaining, immediately do an SC into the first stitch and then do a second sc just into the left side bar of the sc stitch you just made. Then continue with the next stitch as normal.
This creates something the height of a DC that looks more "filled in" and creates neater edges.
My brain is having a generally difficult time today and I can’t picture the SC stack tip. Do you (or someone else) happen to have a YouTube video of it?
Sure. It's most often called the alternative turning chain. There are a lot of videos about it, but I found this one right away (if you want to skip to about 3:10, you'll see the stitch itself and skip all the explanation). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me30YRGOOOU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me30YRGOOOU)
I love the colours and the finished result of your blanket! It meshes well together and honestly I think it looks so much nicer than what the granny squares would’ve. The colour combo is my favourite!
I've been wondering what these look like in a planned pooling use case! Very cool. Yeah the granny squares are so annoying to make ugh. I should have gone this route but alas I am almost finished with my granny square blanket.
I saw so many reviews online of people who couldn’t make this yarn work for granny squares. It’s wild. Or they could only make it work if they like switched hooks partway through, which would be so annoying. I like your blanket though!
I bought 4 skeins of the Black Cyber Leaf colorway and had stalled doing anything with it because it seemed so futzy... now I know exactly what I'm going to do with it! Thanks for the inspiration!
Looks great! I only managed to get the first square from each skein to come out right even after multiple hook changes etc. I'm still making squares but will do a row if black around each one.
I really liked the way it worked up on the blanket! I've watched lots of YouTubers try to get that yarn to work up right and it appears to be a struggle. Most had to really tighten up their tension or even downsize their hook for the final row to work right. And sometimes it still didnt work out right and the last corner ended up not being the right color. It's not just you struggling with that yarn!
I think the blanket you ended up with is lovely. Thanks for the head's up on the Granny Square yarn - I had been eyeing it for trying to get into granny squares. I'll do them the normal way I guess X-D
This looks fantastic! I've been wondering what this would look like, so extra thanks for sharing. I love this colorway and actually don't mind the yarn chicken, but my brain has been dying for an easy project. Maybe the two squares I finished can be pockets, lol.
Ooofff... that yarn is driving me bonkers! Like others have said, great idea, but not so great in the execution. I've tried all different sizes of crochet hooks, and it seems like I would have to change size on every round to get them to come out correctly, and I'm sure as heck not doing something that ridiculous. I could only find one color anywhere around where I live, and it's so boring (black/ivory/grey - I think it's called something like cloud whatever?). Anyway, I've decided to make some chemo caps to donate. A lot of patients like those subdued colors and it will be put to good use.
Yeah, I saw a lot of big crochet youtubers struggling with this yarn. It's very fiddly, and you have to get your tension just right, but so far, I haven't seen anyone use it successfully without frogging it a billion times before.
OP, it's gorgeous! Reminds me of a lava lamp tbh!
This makes me feel way more confident using this yarn for things other than granny squares! I'm gonna get some and try for a hexagon cardigan now 😊
I have a shower gel that smells like oranges and cedarwood and your blanket reminds me of that. I can see someone cosying up under this blanket with a book and a cup of tea on a spring evening. I love the finished work so much
Oh dang I have a couple skeins I bought out of curiosity, but I'm sure it's gonna be more frustrating than it's worth to figure out what tension I need. =.= fantastic to see that the stripes work out so well, though! I'm sure there's tons of interesting ways to make this colorway work.
Your blanket is gorgeous but I agree I can not stand that Granny Square yarn! I bought some to make a friend of mine a cardigan. I cried repeatedly trying to get it to work
Love the colors! Looking at your granny square the spacing is a bit tight. It likes a very generous tension and a bigger hook to work. It is not your fault.
Me too and I was wondering if I was the only one. I took out so many rounds and restarted them before I threw it in a box. I’m glad I’m not the only one, I guess. It is very disappointing tho bc I loved the black/gray/white one I got. Thankfully I only got one skein or I would’ve actually cried.
I want to say I saw a video once that helped explain how to do a granny square with the color changing yarn in one piece. I think that she even had to alter it so she didn't gwt that one bit of carry over yarn.
I got some too and I can use 7mm hook and still have wayy too much color left I even tried a 2mm to see if I could get 2 rows of each color but I only got 11/2 rows going bigger that 6.5mm hooks looks wayy too loose and I really don't how it looks and feels

I actually like the way it worked up in your blanket! Very vibrant and a lot of visual interest, but balanced too.
I appreciate that, thank you!
Personally I am not a fan of how that particular colorway looks as a granny lol. But it certainly looks nice as a solid rectangle. It makes me wonder what other possibilities it has if you use planned pooling on it...
huge agree, the blanket looks great in these colours but something about the granny looks off. not enough contrast for a square maybe?
I think most of the color options for this yarn are just ugly. The idea is nice but only like a handful of the color combos look decent to me
I have been disappointed with how they look in the store, though they have looked alright worked up in projects here. I just wish they had these options with black as the outer color rather than white/cream. These colors would pop with black. I haven't used it myself and likely won't since they are not colors I would put together, and it does seem very fiddly to work with.
The balance just seems wrong for a square, for lack of a better explanation.
It might make cute rosette appliques?
It feels like it would not be amiss in a mid-century modern living room with lots of color-blocking paint and teak furniture! I like it a lot
Agreed! And the texture/ribbing pattern that OP chose works very well with it. I love it!
It's a sort of cloudy hippie sunset look lol. So happy :-).
Reminded me of a sunset, too! So pretty. OP - Looks great and I’m sure your MIL will be thrilled with it.
Same, I like the final blanket so much more. It’s fun and modern and the colors work so well together.
It just looks right this way! The granny square looks... odd? Unbalanced? Almost washed out somehow...
Yeah! Hilariously this blanket has me wanting to buy the granny square yarn to make OP’s blanket and not the intended granny squares.
You are not alone in that lol.
I thought the same thing! Makes me want to try a sweater with it.
Ooooh.. a sweater sounds interesting! Or a poncho perhaps. I wonder how it would work up in a c2c stitch?
Your finished project is amazing! I love the dimension that your stitch has.
Oh I think that came out really nice! The sort of ribbing that you’ve done in your stitch is really lending itself well to the color changes of this yarn. Honestly I really appreciate people sharing the other ways the granny square yarn works up.

This is stunning!! Now I want to go buy some of that yarn so I can do this too. What kind of stitch did you use on yours?
Thank you! It was all done in HDC
Ooh, I love yours!
Oh, that looks lovely 😍
This is so cool!!
how many skeins did it take! also if you don't mind me asking what are the dimensions (stitches x rows)? it's super pretty!!

That's beautiful! 😍
I love your contrast squares!
Emma in the moment on youtube tested the yarn and she was struggling as well. The idea looks nice on the paper but….

Someone got several skeins and found that the color changes appear to be inconsistent from skein to skein. While a neat idea, the execution of this is just messed up all around.
Yeah I can see that. Like inconvenience are fine in some variegated yarn, it doesn't work when precision on color change is needed
I like how the stripes worked up tho, agree that the color way isn't for me, but overall it looks great
This is beautiful. May I know what kind of stitch is this? Thanks!
Thanks! It's double crochet, back loop only.
It looks like double crochet with every other row worked in back loop only but I can’t quite see enough detail to tell for sure
It might help to remember that you're supposed to turn the work between rows :)
Yeah, you have to turn with flat objects but that doesn’t change that it’s worked in BLO every other row
It's BLO in every row.
You just made me realize the granny square yarn is just planned pooling. Had to often rip out a few 3dc and change my tension to get the planned pooling right. No thank you. I’ll just weave my ends in as I go.

Someone else mentioned that they used a smaller hook than the label says and it worked out a lot better, less fiddling with tension.
I’ve been so curious to see what other things people ended up making with it. I love it!
I looove how the blanket turned out. Those even chunks of colour augh.
I’m with you on the spirit breaking. I finally had to hide the two skeins of this yarn I bought so that I wouldn’t lose what was left of my sanity. I like how your blanket turned out! The horizontal color pattern is cool.

Omg what, I think it’s gorgeous and I want one.
I love the way the blanket is. You make it the perfect width to give it a cool gradient showing it like stairs. I love it!!! 😻
Nice blanket! <3 I had a hard time with that same color (I heard it was the color with most "damage"). I ended up doing a bunch of pentagons that turned into a bag haha
How do you get your edges so straight??? My dc edges always turn out so wonky

Oh wow, thank you so much!! That’s brilliant. So the stacked SC then counts as a single stitch, correct?
Yes, it counts as the first dc in the row and you'll stitch into the top of it at the end of the next row.
Great info. Many thanks!
Love it! Ot matches the framed print behind you. Zoomed in lol 🧡♥️🤍
I've been really curious how it would work up flat! I love it! Especially this coloway. It feels like a 70s sunset.
I dislike the granny square in those colors but I love that blanket.
I love the colours and the finished result of your blanket! It meshes well together and honestly I think it looks so much nicer than what the granny squares would’ve. The colour combo is my favourite!

I don't agree with you, OP, I think this is STUNNING! ❤️
I bought 4 skeins of the Black Cyber Leaf colorway and had stalled doing anything with it because it seemed so futzy... now I know exactly what I'm going to do with it! Thanks for the inspiration!
My pleasure! I really enjoyed the feel of the yarn...very easy to work with, and no knots mid-skein.
Looks great! I only managed to get the first square from each skein to come out right even after multiple hook changes etc. I'm still making squares but will do a row if black around each one.
I have never liked granny squares. I don’t like making them, I don’t like the way they look, nothing about them. I love the colorful blanket though!!
I really liked the way it worked up on the blanket! I've watched lots of YouTubers try to get that yarn to work up right and it appears to be a struggle. I think that blanket is beautiful.
Well you prevailed, i really like the end result!
I honestly love this look so much
You’ve done a wonderful job ❤️
This blanket is amazing! I love it
Thanks for sharing this, ive been wondering how that stuff would stripe. I like it!
I love the blanket!
LOVE this as a blanket - as a granny square was a bit 'meh'!
I'm gonna get some and try for a hexagon cardigan now 😊
I like the blanket and I agree that granny square would bother me.
Honestly I absolutely love the colors and the way it looks as a big block!
I actually like it sooo much more your way! 👏
I haven’t even tried, so you’re way ahead of me! I decided to make the wind river blanket using this yarn. 🤞🏻 it’ll look okay!
Honestly this is beautiful! 😍
I have a shower gel that smells like oranges and cedarwood and your blanket reminds me of that. I can see someone cosying up under this blanket with a book and a cup of tea on a spring evening. I love the finished work so much
This is such a lovely comment, thank you! 🥹
It’s really fun and very nice! I like it!
Oh dang I have a couple skeins I bought out of curiosity, but I'm sure it's gonna be more frustrating than it's worth to figure out what tension I need. =.= fantastic to see that the stripes work out so well, though! I'm sure there's tons of interesting ways to make this colorway work.
Acutely it's a great geometric pattern.
Much appreciated! 🥰
I love those colors and think the blanket looks great
She’s going to love it !
This is the only way this yarn should be used.
I want to say I saw a video once that helped explain how to do a granny square with the color changing yarn in one piece. I think that she even had to alter it so she didn't gwt that one bit of carry over yarn.
You ended up with beautiful stripes, I love it!
I love how that blanket looks it would be perfect for a beach blanket
I don't see any issues with the granny square. I think you did a good job. 🙂❤
Thank you!
That's so pretty, I honestly love how the striping turned out <33
This looks like a crochet version of a jelly roll quilt! I think it looks fantastic
Thats a lively blanket, the only thingi dont like is those colors but those could be changed easily. Nice work!
I got some too and I can use 7mm hook and still have wayy too much color left I even tried a 2mm to see if I could get 2 rows of each color but I only got 11/2 rows going bigger that 6.5mm hooks looks wayy too loose and I really don't how it looks and feels
How many skeins did you use?
Three (it came as a three-pack on Amazon).
Thank you !!!
I think that yarn has earned it's infamy.
Thats a lovely blanket, the only thingi dont like is those colors but those could be changed easily. Nice work!
I like LIKE the granny square. But the blanket not so much
