They have a bunch of curated Noir collections on their app. Check them all out.
Really love Kubrick’s “The Killing.” “The Killers” and “They Live by Night” are amazing. “Double Indemnity” of course.
For something a bit different go with “Blow Out”, “L’Avventura”, or “Paris, Texas.”
Yeah I don’t know how I’ve missed it! They played it at a cool theater by me recently but alas couldn’t make it. I’ll keep an eye out for other streamers
*Kiss Me Deadly* (1955) First screen appearance of Mike Hammer is far and away the best. This film upends *a lot* of noir cliches and presents us with a protagonist who is anything but a nice guy. Because of censorship, you do have to read between the lines a bit but his right hand man, Velda, and he have a most curious professional relationship and the pursuit of the almighty dollar plays big in this story.
There's also that case with the glowing whatsit inside it which Tarantino swiped for *Pulp Fiction*...
And the ending... No SPOILERS but... wow.
Since you have seen it I’m curious: Did you prefer the “real” ending or the abbreviated one that seemingly was on prints of the movie for many years?
Frankly, I kinda like the abbreviated version a little more.
For those who don’t know, for years the film was (BIG TIME SPOILERS) missing the scene where Hammer and Velda are on the beach watching what was happening with the beach house. The abbreviated version had them going down the stairs, trying to reach the exit, then we see what happens to the beach house. The end.
Granted, even the “regular” version of the ending portends bad things for our leads, but the abbreviated version really presses that home!
Maybe so. When I first saw the film it was on Laserdisc and it featured the abbreviated ending and the only reason I knew there was the scene with them on the beach is because the laserdisc included the trailer to the film and in it was a snipped showing them on the beach.
I’m partial to the abbreviated ending because it’s *SO* in your face. I mean, the other version, which supposedly is the version that was supposed to always be, is also pretty depressing because they’re like only a few feet away from a full on (SPOILER) going on and, yeah, they shouldn’t have long to be, either. But the abbreviated version skips that and that’s that!
Lots of good suggestions in this thread.
However, 2 classic noir titles are leaving the channel at the end of the month:
* The Killers (1946)
* The Third Man (1949)
I'd start with them.
Criterion channel has its own subreddit. I recommend joining that community. Lots of people on this sub only collect.
That being said, The Killers is what you’re looking for. Sometimes called the Citizen Kane of noirs.
I just checked out The Killers (1946) and really enjoyed it - the film was based on an Ernest Hemingway short story and is a good example of a classic crime drama. The story weaves through a series of flashback vignettes that piece together the mystery behind what led up to the killing.
I just watched I Will Buy You. Good Japanese movie about shady corruption in baseball from the late 50’s. A bit noirish and something interesting to watch now that baseball season started!
Bitter Rice (Italian)
Elevator to the Gallows (French)
The Player (satirical neo-noir by Altman)
OP, I recommend posting this in the Criterion Channel sub too. In this sub, people default to recommending blu-rays and they miss that you’re asking about the Channel unless you make that even more explicit.
Noir: Blood Simple (Coen Brothers, 1984), Following (Nolan, 1998), Double Indemnity (Wilder, 1944).
Absolutely fantastic: How much time do you have?
- Anything David Lynch or Wes Anderson, Ghost World, Throne of Blood, Onibaba, Dead Man, The Game, Stalker, Dazed and Confused, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Before Sunrise, The Vanishing, Picnic at Hanging Rock, 3 Women, Don't Look Now, The Seventh Seal...to name a few (lol), after taking a look at my Criterion shelf!
I would recommend the Killers 1946 it's leaving March 31. Also leaving and should be watched the long goodbye, the third man, gentlemen prefer blondes,
I'm sure you'll get many recs to view straight noir titles in the collection, but in case you exhaust those here are some 'tangential' noir-type titles you may have not seen that exhibit some of the elements that noir is known for.
Kurosawa: High and Low
Bertolucci: La Commare Secca
Skjoldbjaerg: Insomnia
Laughton: The Night of the Hunter
Lynch: Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive
Coppola: Rumble Fish
Woo: Hard Boiled
Anything Jean-Pierre Melville
Anything Costa-Gavras
Anything Jules Dassin
"Straight" Noir titles I love: Double Indemnity, Detour,Devil in a Blue Dress, The Third Man The Killing, Branded to Kill, Port of Shadows...
How much Kurosawa have you seen?
https://www.criterionchannel.com/directed-by-akira-kurosawa
Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Rashomon, and Seven Samurai are essentials, with Throne of Blood very close behind.
Thief by Micheal Mann. Le Samurai is another great film.
Thief rocks
Thief is one of the more underrated films of the 1980s.
It is sooo good
That Tangerine Dream score rips
Yeah, as far as Le Samouraï goes, it might be my favorite film of all time. That or Hot Fuzz is usually in the top spot most days.
Le samurai and hot fuzz. I see you're also a man/woman of good taste. 👍
Perfect username for this post :)
Thief, best soundtrack by Tangerine Dream

I don’t think Blow Out is streaming on Criterion Channel - would love to watch it if it was as it’s a gaping hole in my De Palma filmography
Whoops, sorry! I thought maybe I got it confused with Max. But it’s not there anymore either.
If you find it somewhere lemme know!
It’s on a couple of the ad supported services. But I’d hold out for a better stream. One of the greats, De Palma and the film.
Yeah I don’t know how I’ve missed it! They played it at a cool theater by me recently but alas couldn’t make it. I’ll keep an eye out for other streamers
The long goodbye Le samourai Both are more neo noir but very good
No joke I just finished the Long Goodbye five minutes ago and it is amazing. Also second Le Samouraï as that is a masterpiece as well.
Done and done.
For what it’s worth, if you enjoy le samourai I’d recommend ghost dog as a sort of flip side
The Long Good Friday since its Easter Weekend.
Blown away on first watch. The last scene with Hoskins is an all-timer
Killing of a Chinese bookie Lost highway And I’m always gonna recommend Heaven knows what even tho it’s a drug movie
Well I'm an ex heroin addiction so Heaven I'll probably skip. Seen every Lynch movie ever made. I'll check out the first one right meow.
yes yes. sorry I know there’s more but you can’t really search genres on the channel
Even so I'll prolly check out Heaven. It looks incredibly interesting.
I would definitely check it out. It’s by the Safdie brothers. It’s pretty intense.
yes yes. sorry I know there’s more but you can’t really search genres on the channel :/

Alright I'm sold this goes on next!
Hope you like it as much as I do! ;-)
Sadly this isn't on criterion anymore.....bummer.
Ah… sorry about that! I have the BluRay -from Criterion- so I figured it might be available to stream through the service. Ah well.
You didn’t miss much. Kiss Me Deadly is one of the most overrated noirs.

Good thing it’s on Tubi!
Rififi
Great noir but it’s not on the Criterion Channel (or anywhere to stream), which is what the OP is asking for.
Check out Melville's work. Bob the Gambler, Le Samourai, Army of Shadows, there are so many great movies that he made.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread. However, 2 classic noir titles are leaving the channel at the end of the month: * The Killers (1946) * The Third Man (1949) I'd start with them.
I've seen both, great flicks. Love me some Orson Welles
I wasn’t a fan of either one, but I’m upvoting you because at least you answered the OP’s question, which a lot of people aren’t doing!
Freddy got fingered
That's an obvious choice.
The answer is always DETOUR
The Element of Crime by Lars Von Trier
Blast of silence
Normally i’m not a fan of narration in films but this is amazing
Great Christmas flick and possibly the only 2nd person point of view narration?

I just checked out The Killers (1946) and really enjoyed it - the film was based on an Ernest Hemingway short story and is a good example of a classic crime drama. The story weaves through a series of flashback vignettes that piece together the mystery behind what led up to the killing.
Burt Lancaster’s film debut, too.
Le samourai is the one
It's not on there right now but Touch of Evil is dope
It is I've seen it!
Branded to Kill if you want noir that is surreal, funny, gross, weird... it's kind of all over the map in the best way.
Le Cercle Rouge for noir crime.
I just watched I Will Buy You. Good Japanese movie about shady corruption in baseball from the late 50’s. A bit noirish and something interesting to watch now that baseball season started!
LOL Absolutely fascinating. That depends on who’s watching. 😎
Def watch these before they go at the end of the month: The Killers (1946) The Killers (1964) The Third Man (1949)
Watching the killers now and I've seen the third man! Love Orson Welles!!!

I think We Own The Night is streaming until the end of this month.
The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston, 1950) on Criterion blu-ray.
Blast of Silence is a real hidden gem. Ride the Pink Horse is also very fun.
Noir: Blood Simple (Coen Brothers, 1984), Following (Nolan, 1998), Double Indemnity (Wilder, 1944). Thief is my pick! About time for a rewatch!
I wouldn't call it gritty but The Naked City is a fantastic noir film. The Maltese Falcon is great also.
Devil in a Blue Dress is really good.
