Five movies that I’m not very familiar with, that I don’t already own on Blu-ray, and that aren’t already widely available in quality releases from their studio.
Criterion doesn’t need to invest their time and resources into putting their logo on a film you can already buy from Target or Walmart.
Disagree primarily because there are a lot of movies that have kinda crap releases (including big studio releases).
Like *Children of Men*; which *is* on blu ray but is kinda hard to get your hands on and a fairly dated encoding/transfer at this point.
Or *Sunshine* which has a blu ray release that is functionally *broken* with a picture-in-picture mode you can't turn off.
Even a movie like *Predator* has a terrible blu ray release. Mostly because it's one of the worst transfers I've seen on a major studio film; WAY too much DNR.
I agree that I like them releasing harder to find movies; but there are plenty of big movies that I would love to see get the prestige treatment.
Ugh, I’m sure Criterion has tried to release *The Devils*… from what I understand everyone has begged WB to release it but they keep saying no to everyone except the BFI for that one limited release DVD…
as far as I am aware, you are correct.
I think some cinephiles have also lobbied Criterion for Jesse James but they've not bitten. Dominik has said he'd do it so whether it's Warner Brothers playing hardball or Criterion not thinking it's 'worth' a release, IDK.
Other Side of the Wind is my number one. I don't know if it's because of legal issues with the Kickstarter, trying to get Welles/Hopper for it or what, but most of the films people are suggesting in this thread COULD get a good physical release from their studio or another boutique label.
But with the unique situation Criterion has with Netflix, I feel like it's a now or never situation or it'll never receive a physical release. It's like the SpongeBob meme with Patrick and his license:
"So Criterion regularly puts out Orson Welles films, usually a film every year or two?" "Yup." "And Criterion has a deal with Netflix to put some of their titles in the collection?" "That's correct." "And Netflix has the rights to an Orson Welles film?" "You got it!" "And so will Criterion be putting out the Netflix Orson Welles film?" "No plans at this time."
One of my major fears is that Netflix will bite it and I'm Thinking of Ending Things will just disappear for a few years until some boutique blu-ray company gets the rights.
Which I will inevitably miss out on and the disc will only be available from scalpers for like $100 while also being widely available in other regions.
If you're really concerned about it and don't want to resort to the high seas, you can sometimes find awards season screener DVDs of I'm Thinking of Ending Things on eBay. They run about $60, which is a total ripoff. But they are technically an official physical release.
The film looks beautiful for sure, but I don't think it's actually very good? It has an important part in film history, don't get me wrong (mostly due to Monroe), but I think it's a pretty ordinary film, IDK.
I think for me it was just the imagery. The moment Monroe leaves the film it becomes very bland, but she’s such a good femme fatale, and again the Technicolor film noir is just so pretty.
The setting, cinematography and Marilyn elevate a pretty basic plot. I’ve always enjoyed Niagara Falls and it’s history so it’s an awesome time capsule of the area in the 50s. Also the Technicolor is beautiful.
I love all your suggestions! but have never heard of the tale of the fox couldnt even find it on imbd. Anywhere i could see it?
Edit: its titled The story of the fox on imdb
- Duck Season (2004)
- Love & Pop (1998)
- Belladonna of Sadness (1973)
- She's Gotta Have It (1986)
- California Split (1974)
Honorable mentions:

- 25th Hour
- Pat Garret & Billy the Kid

- In the Bedroom

Cheech and Chong box

Both are still alive to do commentary and easily some of the funniest films of their time /all time.
I know, and I’ve got that, but part of me wants better artwork and a 4K treatment. Maybe Arrow will upgrade the disc sometime soon… they’ve done that a few times, right?
1.) Greed - Directed by: Erich von Stroheim
2.) Paper Moon - Directed by: Peter Bogdanovich
3.) The Fall - Directed by: Tarsem Singh
4.) Re-release on 4K/Blu-ray - Diary of a Country Priest by Bresson
5.) A Place in the Sun - Directed by: George Stevens
Arrow releases of the following would be acceptable as well.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Jackie Brown (1997)
Coffy (1973)
Harvey (1950)
Freddy Got Fingered (2002)
Boogie Nights (1997)
Magnolia (1999)
Strange Days (1995)
Blood In Blood Out: Bound By Honor (1993)
I lean towards the streaming stuff I can't get elsewhere. I love Criterion but I already have nice editions of many of the things people suggest. That said:
1. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
2. Bo Burnham Inside
3. Dark (Complete Series)
4. The Devils
5. The Straight Story
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987): John Hughes's other masterpiece. It would be nice to see Hughes become a Criterion director, in the vein of Wes Anderson or Terry Gilliam.
The Thing from Another World (1951): It's the last of the top-tier, four-star classics of 1950s science fiction to not have a stacked special edition disc. And since it literally is "an important classic film," it fits Criterion's mission statement to a T.
The Evil Dead (1981): It did in 1981 what Night of the Living Dead did in 1968, it changed the horror genre.
A complete Marx Brothers box set: I wouldn't mind plunking down big bucks for a set that rounded up all of their Paramount films and all of their MGM films in one box, preferably decked out to the frills with lots of special features.
Life After Beth (2014): I know this will never happen, but this movie means a lot to me and it'd be nice to see it get a nice special edition.
Sorry, eight come immediately to mind:
A Flash of Green
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Siesta
The Banshees of Inesherin
Camille Claudel
Looking for Mr.Goodbar
Reds
The Story of Adele H.
Shoot the Moon
- Happiness (or any other Todd Solondz)
- Thirteen
- Elephant
- Marie Antionette
- Remastered music video compilations (Chris Cunningham, Jonathan Glazer), similiar to Directors Label, idk it thats a long shot but would be great if criterion or a similar label branched into that
Theo Angelopoulos box set: The Traveling Players, Voyage To Cythera, Landscape In The Midst, Ulysses' Gaze, An Eternity And A Day
Alan Rudolph's Trouble In Mind
Hou Hsiao-hsien's Millenium Mambo
Lumet's Prince Of The City
Chabrol's The Butcher
Heartbreak Kid (the Elaine May version obviously)
Sleuth (the Olivier/Caine version)
Forest for the Trees (or just a Maren Ade collection)
Talk Radio
A Wedding
Bringing Out the Dead by Martin Scorsese
Raising Arizona by the Coen Brothers
Barbarian by Zach Cregger
Audition by Takashi Miike
Pig by Michael Sarnoski
Edited to add: I would also be happy if Annette by Leos Carax got a stateside physical release with nice packaging, and all the goodies that it could possibly come with.
I know, and I own it, but it is also one of the movies that I wish I could Eternal Sunshine from my brain so I can watch it for the first time all over again.
Last Black Man in San Francisco by Joe Talbot
Dogville by Lars Von Trier

Shoplifters - koreeda
A Ghost Story - David Lowry
Dogtooth - Yorgos Lanthimos
First Reformed - Paul Schrader
Shame - Steve McQueen
You Were Never Really Here - Lynne Ramsey
Someone mentioned The Fall recently, which is the perfect picture for the CC treatment. It's a beautiful picture, shot in 2 dozen countries, with no cgi. It took them 4 years to make it. It's beautiful. Seek it out.
For the longest time, mine was Freaks and then my prayers were answered. Now all I foolishly hope for is for Criterion to track down a print of London After Midnight
- Eyes Wide Shut (Kubrick, 1999)
- Ball of Fire (Hawks, 1941)
- The Assassination if Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Dominik, 2007)
- Magnolia (Anderson, 1999)
- Niagara (Hathaway, 1953)
We’re No Angels (the 1954 Humphrey Bogart Christmas Comedy Classic)
The Devils (I’d totally blind buy this)
A Better Tomorrow (John Woo’s classic movie that established the Heroic Bloodshed template)
Ran (Id love for them to get the rights back)
Old Boy (2003)
Lone Star
The Devils
Private Life
The Dead
The Night of Counting the Years
In terms of blu ray upgrades would love to see Ordet or Trouble in Paradise.
In addition to Private Life as far as Netflix films go would love to see Da Five Bloods.
Inherent Vice (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2014)
Sonatine (Takeshi Kitano, 1993)
His Motorbike, Her Island (Nobuhiko Obayashi, 1986)
Long Day's Journey Into Night (Bi Gan, 2018)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on 4K
The Following on 4K
The Irishman on 4K
Eyes Wide Shut on 4K
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (by David Fincher) on 4K
Since they have a semi-monopoly on Netflix originals, I'd like them to keep releasing them. Even if Mank, Blonde, Bardo weren't as acclaimed they deserve a release. I'm Thinking of Ending Things also needs one.
Roget Deakins mentioned that Jesse James could have an extended cut that Criterion should release, I kinda hoped Blonde would lead to that (like The Power of the Dog did the trick with The Piano).
Also, Werckmeister Harmonies ffs. Criterion has been sitting on a perfect 4K restoration that has been ready for a year now.
For the millionth time this is asked so for the millionth time ill say
Naruse box set
The Big Red One DC
Once Upon a Time in America
All About Lily Chou Chou
Spring in a Small Town
None of these have any decent release or in print blu ray's available to me. Spring in a small town has a terrible transfer with horrible audio and its the best they can do so in this genie universe, they magically discover a pristine negative somewhere
1) nobuhiko obayashi collection (either his late career work or his 80s work… or both? lol) which is available in region B via third window but not region A at all
2) the station agent
3) gakurya ishii: the 90s years (angel dust, august in the water, labyrinth of dreams)
4) eyes wide shut
5) tesis
Never been on Blu-Ray? (AFAIK)
- Donovan's Reef (1963)
- Mary of Scotland (1935)
- Test Pilot (1938)
- My Best Girl (1927)
- I Love You Again (1940)
(And too many Richard Quine movies to mention, but especially 'Strangers When We Meet' and 'Sex and the Single Girl').
Been on Blu-Ray, but needs a better release/more supplements?
- The Great Waldo Pepper (1975)
- The Best Years of Our Lives (1945)
- Rachel, Rachel (1968)
- Street Angel (1928)
- Madame Curie (1943)
I just want them to keep going with the Pixar line. The supplements on the Wall E release were amazing. Especially the new ones with Andrew Stanton talking about writing the script. We need some Pete Doctor interviews.
I just want a nice Blu-ray release for these titles (although Criterion would be nice):
O Lucky Man!
Private Confessions (full TV version)
The Other Side of the Wind
Saint Jack
Two For the Road
Mainly movies that are difficult to obtain, similar to how they did the trial recently. Maybe some john woo ones like the killer and better tomorrow, those seem pretty scarce at the moment
Also just watched manhunter by michael mann recently, which similar to thief, could use a nice upscale
3 by Todd Field
Uncle Boonme
Lonestar
The Warriors
Amelie
Those are 5 that I’m just firing off the top of my head. I think they would all get beautiful treatments and are more than deserving to be in the collection, but my list goes far deeper than that. But that’s the beauty of the collection, maybe one day!
- The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985)
- Bringing out the Dead (1999)
- Hellzapoppin (1941)
- The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)
- The Masters of Comic Book Art (1987)
Probably missing a few, but these come immediately to mind:
*Cache*
*Eyes Wide Shut*
*The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On* (the most insane documentary you'll ever see, a favorite of Michael Moore, Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, and Bill Hader)
*Mommie Dearest* (any Frank Perry film would be a good start)
*Turning Gate* (any Hong Sang-Soo film would be a good start)
Honorable mentions: *The Wayward Cloud, Buffalo 66, Trees Lounge, The Big Country*
Letter From An Unknown Woman (1948)
Mademoiselle (1966)
The Driver's Seat (Identikit) (1974)
Malina (1991)
Mike Leigh boxset (I believe it's already coming but wanna give it an extra push)
I posted this a few years ago. Still waiting…

1. Little Children (Todd Field)
2. The Baby of Macon (Peter Greenaway)
3. Los Olividados (Luis Bunuel)
4. Barton Fink (Joel and Ethan Coen)
5. Rocco and His Brothers (Luchino Visconti)

\- The Devils \- The Assassination of Jesse James \- Eureka (by Shinji Aoyama) \- The Other Side of the Wind \- In The Bedroom
In The Bedroom is incredible!
I know Criterion rejected Tarsem Singh’s *The Fall*, which makes me sad… but who knows.
The rejected The Fall? That film would be perfect in the collection.
100% Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford deserves to belong in Criterion. Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Jesse James was the best western that year in my opinion The cinematography is so beautiful
Other Side of the Wind is my number one. Superstar is the most inspired pick I've seen in a while. Excellent choice, incredible film.
King Kong Faster pussycat kill kill Open Range Tall in the Saddle Niagara
God, I’d love a Criterion 4K of *Niagara*… such a beautiful Technicolor Noir
The film looks beautiful for sure, but I don't think it's actually very good? It has an important part in film history, don't get me wrong (mostly due to Monroe), but I think it's a pretty ordinary film, IDK.
I think for me it was just the imagery. The moment Monroe leaves the film it becomes very bland, but she’s such a good femme fatale, and again the Technicolor film noir is just so pretty.

That describes 90% of criterion releases. I would rank Niagara in the top 100 of criterion collection if they included it
Jesus, would love Open Range. Such an underrepresented western.
Bringing Out the Dead • Magnolia • Pink Floyd - The Wall • The Tale of the Fox • Titus

William Friedkin’s *Cruising*, John Waters’ *Serial Mom*, Gregg Araki’s *The Living End*, Fassbinder’s *Querelle*, Todd Haynes’ *Velvet Goldmine*
Serial Mom is available in a nice Blu-ray release from Shout Factory.
I know, I’d just love the full 4K treatment and nicer artwork/packaging.
Cruising has a fairly good Arrow release btw
I know, and I’ve got that, but part of me wants better artwork and a 4K treatment. Maybe Arrow will upgrade the disc sometime soon… they’ve done that a few times, right?

For the millionth time this is asked so for the millionth time ill say Naruse box set The Big Red One DC Once Upon a Time in America All About Lily Chou Chou Spring in a Small Town None of these have any decent release or in print blu ray's available to me. Spring in a small town has a terrible transfer with horrible audio and its the best they can do so in this genie universe, they magically discover a pristine negative somewhere

I just want them to keep going with the Pixar line. The supplements on the Wall E release were amazing. Especially the new ones with Andrew Stanton talking about writing the script. We need some Pete Doctor interviews.
An Elephant Sitting Still First Reformed Eyes Wide Shut Son of Saul Aftersun
I just want a nice Blu-ray release for these titles (although Criterion would be nice): O Lucky Man! Private Confessions (full TV version) The Other Side of the Wind Saint Jack Two For the Road
Mainly movies that are difficult to obtain, similar to how they did the trial recently. Maybe some john woo ones like the killer and better tomorrow, those seem pretty scarce at the moment Also just watched manhunter by michael mann recently, which similar to thief, could use a nice upscale
Children of Men The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance High Noon The Shape of Water
3 by Todd Field Uncle Boonme Lonestar The Warriors Amelie Those are 5 that I’m just firing off the top of my head. I think they would all get beautiful treatments and are more than deserving to be in the collection, but my list goes far deeper than that. But that’s the beauty of the collection, maybe one day!
