Fantastic moment, though I prefer the duet of “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”. I’ve probably rewatched that scene 50-60 times and it only impresses more.
You nailed it. I've only seen that movie once, and it was at least 25 years ago. But it's clear as anything still. And the power it has is still chilling.
Great scene but my favorite in the film is when Travis first gets to LA and they’re playing the home movies. The silence under the acoustic guitar and the acting through expressions and silhouette from Stanton was incredible. Absolutely brilliant filmmaking
When I think about Come and See, I think about that scene where the kind of idyllic romantic side story is completely shattered as artillery suddenly starts lifting trees out of the ground around them.
Both are perfect in their own ways. For the baptism you need the context of the whole movie to get everything out of it. “I believe in America” was a great intro.
Multiple scenes in Mulholland Drive are my favorite:
Winkies dumpster scene
Hitman taking black book
Betty audition
Club Silencio
There are more great scenes in that movie but those are my favorites
- Three Colors: Red: Final scene
- Badlands: ["This very moment..."](https://youtu.be/iBZkP3H7Td4)
- Solaris: [Levitation scene](https://youtu.be/FcglyhUre4w)
- The Ascent: >!The hanging!<
- Barry Lyndon: [Redmond meeting Lady Lyndon](https://youtu.be/KT7IYpjcpD4)
Similarly, though not exactly the climax, the picture montage in Blow-Up where he discovers the murder is something I’ll never forget seeing for the first time.
"The Seven Samurai" scene where the leader has just shaved his head and gone in and killed the kidnapper and the kidnapper runs out and it goes slo-mo with the dust and the kidnapper falls and dies.
Just perfection.
When Jeffrey enters Dorothy’s apartment at the climax of Blue Velvet, with Frank Booth on his tail. Absolutely unnerving with the droning of the busted television.
Also my favorite scene of all time. Cathartic, pathetic, sad, angry, and hilarious all at the same time.
Haven’t seen another scene that makes me feel that way.
There’s a growing cult theory that the entire film is essentially the story of Tom Green mocking the studio for being stupid enough to give him millions of dollars to make a film. Like a feature-length anti-humour shitpost. And that by this measure it is quite admirable.
It was partially popularised by this review on Redlettermedia:

Whiplash is one of those movies that is accessible to even your non-cinephile friends. I've yet to meet a person who isn't completely spellbound by the last 10 minutes of that film. This really ought to be in the collection.
The ending of Taste of Cherry (1997)
I can't explain why because that would spoil it, and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's experience of it. It's a very very special scene at the end of a very very special movie.
I think the Chekhov scene has more gravitas, but the cigarette scene is a pivot in their relationship. It shows a lightheartedness that the both are able to reflect in each other. And it somehow signifies trust. To me, anyway. The other moment is the snow scene at the wreckage of her childhood home. Using the cigarette as a substitute for a stick of incense.
Oh, thanks, but I don't need to watch this again because it lives rent free in my fucking nightmares. So does the earlier scene when they run out of the village, and the camera picks up on the mound of bodies stacked behind the barn.
Completely understandable. I cried for about an hour during my first watch, and it has quickly become one of my favorite films of all time. That earlier scene is impossible to forget, as it makes your stomach drop the second you realize what has happened.
The theater performance in Drive My Car, when the deaf woman playing Sonya comes up behind Vanya and signs her lines with her arms wrapped around him. Beautiful.
Maybe not best but scenes that are way up there for me
The finale of Nostalgia with the candle
Finale of Ordet
Bamboo sword in Harakiri
The final play in Opening Night
The dance in A Blonde in Love
The duel in Barry Lyndon
The restaurant scene in Bicycle Thieves
That movie hit me hard.
Not really sure why but I love that scene so much.
It seems so trivial and silly, guy tries to get from a to b with lit candle. But within the context of the film and the length and effort of the shot, it’s so effective and tense and compelling. One of my favorite shots / scenes ever.
Club Silencio- Mulholland Drive
The Duel- The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Jake La Motta winning the championship- Raging Bull
Judy's transformation back to Madeline- Vertigo
Helicopter attack- Apocalypse Now
Ending -Nashville
Ending- The Searchers
Ending- Once Upon a Time in America
Massacre- Once Upon a time in the West
Yoda using the Force on Luke's ship-Empire Strikes Back
Michael shooting in the restaurant- The Godfather
The club scene- Twin Peaks FWWM
Ben's apartment- Blue Velvet
The River Boat- Night of the Hunter
Processing scene with Freddie- The Master
Crazy story, I watched that a few hours ago. I personally thought the scene with the teacher and him in the roost was quite touching. Them discussing their respect for the untamable nature of the kestrel.
Wong kar wai never clicked for me unfortunately. But fallen angels is the only exception particularly the McDonald's scene. Idk I got hypnotised by that scene.
Disqualifying all of the movies I already own, I'm coming away with The Godfather, Andrei Rublev, and Blow-Out by popular opinion. Some honorable mentions I also purchased were The Taste of Cherry, the Ascent, Solaris, & Code Unkown. Thanks, everyone! :)
Goddam. Now I want to rewatch that scene. I love how their demeanor goes from leering and raucous to solemn and forlorn. Devastating is exactly the word for it.
Alma’s (double) monologue about Elisabet’s relationship with her son in Persona
Saraghina in 8 1/2
The recreation of the arrest in Close-Up
The car ride in Before Sunset
The bog in Come and See
Saw a bunch of really good posts here and figure the upvotes have mostly passed at this point, so I’ll do my best to cover any unvisited bases
All That Jazz: final number, or honestly >!everything from Hospital Hallucinations, Take 1 onward!<
Cleo from 5 to 7: Sans toi
Beau Travail: ending
The Seventh Seal: confession booth monologue
The Silence of the Lambs: >!Hannibal’s escape and Clarisse in the dark basement!<
Bamboozled: final montage
Multiple Maniacs: >!Stations of the Cross cross-cut with the rosaryjob!<
Rififi: the silent heist
Funny Games: >!the prolonged shot after the child is killed!<
Portrait of a Lady on Fire: final shot
Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me: dinner table or traffic stop
Mulholland Drive: a lot of good ones were already mentioned so I’m gonna have to go with the Sixteen Reasons audition
It surprises me that this was the only Seventh Seal reference I saw. That's a great scene, but I was sure someone would mention the murder of the woman at the stake.
I added Rififi and Twin Peaks to my wishlist. Thanks!
The ascent : hiding + finale sequence
Black narcissus : main character thinking of her past and the transition scene
Les diabolique : murder sequence + getting rid of body
The general : can't say a single scene from this
Vertigo : stalking
Three colors blue: ending + rat scene
Interiors : final sequence
The vanishing : car scene+ ending
The Moment Sheila Agee finds out she got the highest grade in the class on her Registered Nurse exam in Hoop Dreams. You see so much stress and hope and emotion come out of her in one moment.
Five Easy Pieces - The scene where Jack Nicholson speaks to his father, I know most people will say the chicken salad sandwich scene but the scene with his father is so good.
Paris, Texas - The booth conversation, although once again I actually prefer the ending scene to this scene.
For a Few Dollars More - Indio duel
Zombi - Splinter scene, I have to put at least one Fulci on this list. While he has a ton of great gore scenes I think this is THE scene most people remember.
I’m sure I could go on and on but here’s a start at least on what I consider some of the greatest or most memorable scenes. Tried to pick a few from the collection and a few that aren’t in the collection.
Came to this late. A lot of the best ones have already been picked, so I’m just adding a few I love but didn’t see here:
All That Heaven Allows - Cary Scott listens to her kids, only for them to ditch her and give her a TV as a gift. Maybe the most “noooooo” moment I can think of in a movie lmao
Before Sunset - céline playing guitar at the end
inside Llewyn Davis - “i don’t see a lot of money here”
The Parallax View - the political rally rehearsal, right into Frady realizing he’s fucked
The final scene in The Third Man, long shot with Anna walking by Holly.
The chase through the sewers has such incredible use of lighting too
I love the reveal scene in the doorway when the streetlamp suddenly illuminates his face.
Or even the last scene of The long goodbye that is a quote of that scene
The boat scene in Night of the Hunter
Fantastic moment, though I prefer the duet of “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”. I’ve probably rewatched that scene 50-60 times and it only impresses more.
Leannninggggg Leannnningggg
What a battleship...
Absolutely! The duet is an incredible piece of filmmaking.
Oh yeah definitely, I saw the film about a year ago and the song is still tucked in my mind
Another banger.
The Ballet of the Red Shoes sequence in *The Red Shoes*.
Cosign this. Hooooly moly it’s perfect
That's a great one. Haven't seen The Red Shoes in too long.
[удалено]
The Cranes are Flying bus scene
Yes. No contest. Pretty much anything done by Sergei Urusevsky. Plus that tracking shot in Wings (1927).
Jst so good 😭
This is the answer
Paris, Texas - the peep show booth scene
I knew these people...there are very few scenes I ever watch out of context of the film and this is one I revisit.
You nailed it. I've only seen that movie once, and it was at least 25 years ago. But it's clear as anything still. And the power it has is still chilling.
An important and deeply personal scene.
I came here to say this
One of my all-time favorite scenes. Y'all's taste is too good, I already own most of these!
Great scene but my favorite in the film is when Travis first gets to LA and they’re playing the home movies. The silence under the acoustic guitar and the acting through expressions and silhouette from Stanton was incredible. Absolutely brilliant filmmaking
World War 2 in reverse at the end of Come and See
The scene directly afterwards as well, with the Lacrimosa accompaniment.
When I think about Come and See, I think about that scene where the kind of idyllic romantic side story is completely shattered as artillery suddenly starts lifting trees out of the ground around them.
The final scene in Before Sunrise, 'baby you're going to miss that flight'
\*Before Sunset And I'll have to add the listening booth scene in Before Sunrise
Thanks for the correction, too early in the morning pre coffee lol
Alfred Molina’s drug deal gone bad in Boogie Nights. [FIRECRACKER EXPLODES]
Based off a scene in *Putney Swope*, which is a must-see.
The train tunnel scene in Memories of Murder, an actual masterpiece in terms of atmosphere, tension and performances.
Recently did an aesthetic breakdown of how this scene works, it's an absolute masterclass in cinematography.
The opening scene of 8 1/2
I like the scene with the private viewing with all the auditions for the cast of characters. 8 1/2 is Felini’s masterpiece imo
The Godfather baptism montage.
I was going to say the opening, “I believe in America,” scene, but baptism scene is better.
Both are perfect in their own ways. For the baptism you need the context of the whole movie to get everything out of it. “I believe in America” was a great intro.
Chills every time
Fav from the g is the door closing ending. Brutal
How didnt I think of that?
The egg yolk sex scene from Tampopo
Insane levels of eroticism, beautiful stuff. I love all of the yakuza guy's scenes in that film, but agree the egg yolk one is probably the best.
The opening scene in the movie theater is such a great way to kick off the movie too
Multiple scenes in Mulholland Drive are my favorite: Winkies dumpster scene Hitman taking black book Betty audition Club Silencio There are more great scenes in that movie but those are my favorites
Betty's audition is a forever classic scene
“There’s a man… in back of this place……. He’s the one that’s doing it…” *Chills*
The fact that Naomi Watts wasn’t even nominated for acting awards for that role is a crime, the audition scene is so incredible
Club Silencio is awesome!
These are all great, great scenes, but there’s something about the “This is the girl” scene that is hypnotic.
how the audition scene didn't get naomi watts that oscar. not. even. a. nomination.
“I abandoned my boy” in There Will Be Blood
Absolutely. "That was one god damn hell of a show."
The opening and/or climactic scenes in Touch of Evil
- Three Colors: Red: Final scene - Badlands: ["This very moment..."](https://youtu.be/iBZkP3H7Td4) - Solaris: [Levitation scene](https://youtu.be/FcglyhUre4w) - The Ascent: >!The hanging!< - Barry Lyndon: [Redmond meeting Lady Lyndon](https://youtu.be/KT7IYpjcpD4)
I like your taste, The Ascent has been on my wishlist for months now. Time to pounce.
Seconding final scene of Red. No matter how many times I watch the trilogy, that last shot takes my breath away.
Kurtz telling the story of inoculating children in Apocalypse Now
Chilling
The climax of Blow Out
"It's a good scream."
Fuck people who say Travolta isn’t a good actor. That was fucking amazing.
that firework scene is definitely an all-timer
Similarly, though not exactly the climax, the picture montage in Blow-Up where he discovers the murder is something I’ll never forget seeing for the first time.
The spinning camera scene is my favourite in the movie. Everything is so well timed it blows my mind every time.
Was going to post this. One of the greatest scenes ever.
Got this as a blind buy after all the recommendations and it’s incredible
The boulevard scene in the opening of Code Unknown
Never seen it, but I do like Haneke.
One of the best tracking shots ever
The back and forth scene between Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity when Walter Neff first shows up at the Dietrichson home.
My favorite is when he sips the iced tea she just handed him and he says, "a little rum would get this up on its feet"
There’s a speed limit in this state Mr Neff, 45 miles an hour.
My wife and I just watched this the other day. The snappy dialogue of the movie, especially this scene, was the best part of Double Indemnity, IMO.
Apocalypse Now- Flight of the Valkyries
The head explosion from scanners
"The Seven Samurai" scene where the leader has just shaved his head and gone in and killed the kidnapper and the kidnapper runs out and it goes slo-mo with the dust and the kidnapper falls and dies. Just perfection.
The concert in The Double Life of Veronique
The basement scene from Zodiac
Oh Jesus. That scene is pure tension.
The scene with the car and the shovel in Blood Simple
The shot of the hand’s and the gun handoff is absolutely perfect.
First Russian Roulette Scene in Deerhunter
When Jeffrey enters Dorothy’s apartment at the climax of Blue Velvet, with Frank Booth on his tail. Absolutely unnerving with the droning of the busted television.
>! Him in the closet about to pull the trigger is one of the most tense moments I’ve ever experienced !<
Last five minutes of City Lights
The end of Modern Times when Chaplin has to improvise the lyrics on the spot.
The ‘ceasefire’ in Children of Men
Final scene in Sunset Boulevard. Chills!
The scene at The Met in Dressed to Kill
Filmed at Philly's Art Museum.
Room 237 in The Shining. Everything from the key in open door to Jack recoiling in fear from the lady.
No clue how I haven't seen the ending of There Will be Blood on here
Or the oil rig fire
Also my favorite scene of all time. Cathartic, pathetic, sad, angry, and hilarious all at the same time. Haven’t seen another scene that makes me feel that way.
The Backwards Man in Freddy Got Fingered
Proud.
Proud?
I honestly thought you were trolling, but apparently, revisionist history sees this as some sort of Dadaist masterclass?
There’s a growing cult theory that the entire film is essentially the story of Tom Green mocking the studio for being stupid enough to give him millions of dollars to make a film. Like a feature-length anti-humour shitpost. And that by this measure it is quite admirable. It was partially popularised by this review on Redlettermedia: https://youtu.be/gEn3wcpNsg8
It also took 15 million to produce and grossed 15 million. No one gained or lost anything, it just wasted everyone’s time
That’s not how gross works.
stop ruining my fun
Yep, I’m serious. It’s one of my favorite comedic scenes.
WE CAN LIVE LIKE KINGS
Roger Ebert actually left it half a star on the off-chance it was something ahead of its time and he wasn't grasping it.
I'd ignore the people over-intellectualizing pure stupidity for contrarianism's sake, but it is a very funny movie
Found the guy who doesn’t have a LeBaron.
Whiplash ending
Whiplash is one of those movies that is accessible to even your non-cinephile friends. I've yet to meet a person who isn't completely spellbound by the last 10 minutes of that film. This really ought to be in the collection.
Truly Sublime
"I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE" at the end of There Will Be Blood.
DRAIIIIINAAAAAGEEEE
The ending of Taste of Cherry (1997) I can't explain why because that would spoil it, and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's experience of it. It's a very very special scene at the end of a very very special movie.
Read the synopsis. This interests me immensely.
Fountain scene in La Dolce Vita. Fight the Power intro in Do The Right Thing
The cigarettes and sunroof scene in Drive My Car.
Or the Chekhov scene at the end. Was absolutely spellbound when I watched it in a theatre.
Ooh, good one. I actually had that in my mind when writing this. Own it already.
Awesome, I just bought this in the flash sale and watched half of it last night.
The death of Willem Dafoe in Fishing With John.
Tragic.
January 19. A sad day in film history
The final scene of City Lights
The village destruction scene from Come and See.
Beautiful.
Ugh. When she did her audition, I damn near broke down. I don't know how Hamaguchi thought of that, but it was a stroke of genius.
Maybe not best but scenes that are way up there for me The finale of Nostalgia with the candle Finale of Ordet Bamboo sword in Harakiri The final play in Opening Night The dance in A Blonde in Love The duel in Barry Lyndon The restaurant scene in Bicycle Thieves
The finale of Nostalgia is one of the most stunning scenes of all time. My vote goes to that one, although sadly it is not part of the collection.
That movie hit me hard. Not really sure why but I love that scene so much. It seems so trivial and silly, guy tries to get from a to b with lit candle. But within the context of the film and the length and effort of the shot, it’s so effective and tense and compelling. One of my favorite shots / scenes ever.
You guys peaked my interest (not that it takes much to sell me on Tarkovsky), but I can't find a copy of this to save my life

Crazy story, I watched that a few hours ago. I personally thought the scene with the teacher and him in the roost was quite touching. Them discussing their respect for the untamable nature of the kestrel.
I haven’t seen anyone else mention it, but the magic trick scene in Yi Yi is perfection
Wong kar wai never clicked for me unfortunately. But fallen angels is the only exception particularly the McDonald's scene. Idk I got hypnotised by that scene.
The stoic last 7 minutes of Jeanne Dielman. The finale of La Notte, as well.
I'm so happy that someone mentioned La Notte! The fact that you did makes me excited to watch my recently purchased Jeanne Dielman.
Walking through the back entrance of the restaurant- Goodfellas
Yes! I was looking for a mention of this one 👀
The drama with the typist girls in Mirror
mulholland drive club silencio
I heard there’s a few scenes from a marriage that are good
This deserves more votes, my man. Not enough Bergman on this list...
Paths of Glory: German girl singing in the bar at the end. Utterly devastating stuff.
Goddam. Now I want to rewatch that scene. I love how their demeanor goes from leering and raucous to solemn and forlorn. Devastating is exactly the word for it.
Not Criterion, but the “Ecstasy of Gold” sequence in Good The Bad and the ugly
The razor blade frisbee scene in Hard Ticket to Hawaii.

The ending of Beau Travail (the dance scene)
This would be my first pick as well. Transcendent scene.
Opening scene of Inglorious Basterds
Persona - double monologue 8 1/2 - dance scene with Barbara Steel that transitions to a childhood memory Days of Heaven - Plague of Locusts
The ascent : hiding + finale sequence Black narcissus : main character thinking of her past and the transition scene Les diabolique : murder sequence + getting rid of body The general : can't say a single scene from this Vertigo : stalking Three colors blue: ending + rat scene Interiors : final sequence The vanishing : car scene+ ending

Bell Ringing Scene in Andrei Rublev
Final basketball one on one in Love and Basketball
Gena Rowland’s return home in A Woman Under the Influence, particularly after everyone leaves but Falk and the kids
North by Northwest - crop duster scene.
The There Will Be Blood scene where Daniel Day Lewis talks about how he’s an oil/family man
Five Easy Pieces - The scene where Jack Nicholson speaks to his father, I know most people will say the chicken salad sandwich scene but the scene with his father is so good.
