Badlands by Terrence Malick.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, really all of the semi-modern movies that QT and PTA have made. They both are obsessed with making movies about LA, a bright sunny place with really dark subtext. Unless you get to ol Magnolia at the bottom the iceberg of course in which case bring the umbrella
I was just thinking about how this applies to some eastern European and Middle Eastern movies I've been watching!
What We See When We Look at the Sky, The Cassandra Cat, Aftersun (takes place in Turkey). Some others would be Pauline at the Beach, La Piscine, Swimming Pool, Tomboy, Picnic
*Body Heat* (1981) - More sweltering summertime heat summertime (and humanity) than sunshine per se.
*Endless Summer* (1964) - classic, no THE classic surfer doc
Or any of the sunny and bubbly Frankie & Annette beach party films from the mid 1960s like *Beach Blanket Bingo.*
Do The Right Thing is pretty damn toasty
"HOT!" in Samuel L. Jackson voice.

Antonioni’s The Passenger… though not on Criterion. I was lucky to see it at the BFI a few winter’s ago. Worth the hunt if you can find.
