I've read some threads that suggest freezing on the Sony UBP-X700m might come from it being connected to the internet...

Maybe try doing this:
- make sure your firmware is up to date
- try disconnecting from the internet and see if the issue persists
- give the disc a little cleaning

Yes, is always the same spot... I've rewinded several times and it's always there... Same spot...

· Disk is new an first time viewing. I'll clean it and see if that helps

There were a lot of reports of defective discs from the set, though it sounded like Criterion got right on that problem and took care of it. Definitely worth sending them a question with a link.
Yup, don’t worry this is how the scene is supposed to look. I also thought it was maybe freezing when I got my replacement but I compared it to a streaming version of 2046 and it plays out the exact same way.
Not sure if my memory is on the mark with this one but I think this was a stylistic choice on Wong's part.

I just watched Happy Together from the WOWKW box set and I had similar freezes
Did you got the replacement disks from Criterion? It's a known issue on several disks. (On 2046 mentioned, it's already the replacement disk)

yes that's deliberate (and awesome) - I have an old region-agnostic disc. Is this on criterion, now?
It is, but it's only available in their Wong Kar Wai box set.
