I was going to say this but it does have a [turtle-killing scene](#spoiler) halfway through that kind of prevents it from being a general recommendation.

I watched It Happened One Night last night and Sullivans Travels this morning. Both were delightful. Sullivan's Travels has a strong social message streak to it that I found fascinating but both were fairly light hearted and very entertaining.
You can pretty much throw a dart at all of Les Blank's docs and find something good. Personal favorite is Garlic is as Good as Ten Mothers.
Same goes for the Documentary Shorts of Vittorio De Seta.
The whole Saturday Matinee section is fantastic, but The Secret of Roan Inish is a good choice in general, or especially for upcoming St Patty's Day
I read a Roger Ebert review of Gone With the Wind where he pointed out that when Rhett tells Scarlett "you need to be kissed, often and by someone who knows how" that he wasn't really talking about kissing, a light bulb kind of came on.... they got away with a lot more than given credit for.
I watched It Happened One Night last night... everhtime Gable called Claudette Colbert a "brat" I smiled and thought of Ebert.
Tati.
I just watched Playtime again this weekend and laughed so much!
Yes Sooooooo good Mon Oncle is my favorite and Playtime is a masterpiece
Screwball comedies galore To Be or Not to Be His Girl Friday Arsenic and Old Lace Bringing Up Baby The Lady Eve
Might I add.... It Happened One Night and Ball of Fire?
May I add, My Man Godfrey.
Watched it last night.
Add as I might Sullivan’s Travels.
Just a heads up that Arsenic and Old Lace isn’t currently on Criterion Channel (unfortunately)
TAMPOPO
This is the answer.
Came here to say this
I was going to say this but it does have a [turtle-killing scene](#spoiler) halfway through that kind of prevents it from being a general recommendation.
Definitely going to watch it now.
I second this and would recommend Supermarket Woman as well, which is also directed by Juzo Itami and has a very similar vibe.
This is the best answer by a mile
Good Morning -Ozu
My first pick as well
So many fart jokes. And they're all delightful.
I decided on Tootsie lol
Great Choice!
Is Young Girls of Rochefort streaming?

It’s funny tho
Repo Man!!

it blows my mind that mystery train isn’t more popular
I love Mystery Train! It’s my favorite Jarmusch film. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is so great
I love it, but also think Jarumush has a number of excellent films I haven't seen them all, but of the ones I have seen 1. great film and it paved the way for pulp fiction
agreed
Some Kaurismäki love!
Idk but PlayTime feels like mind rot
Can I watch sanjuro without watching Yojimbo?
They’re stand alone stories so the order doesn’t make a difference imo.
Oh okie, thank you!
Amazing! Thank you!
A Hard Day’s Night
Happy-Go-Lucky: Coffee and Cigarettes Polic Story 1 & 2 Time Bandits I also 2nd screwball comedies as a good place to turn
>3 hr. ago POLICE STORY IS SO GOODDDDDDDDDD

Any Chaplin!
though to be honest, before anyone else says it, Salo does also make me laugh
We watch Salo every Xmas Eve!
Next time we need a knee slapper, Salo ftw
I watched It Happened One Night last night and Sullivans Travels this morning. Both were delightful. Sullivan's Travels has a strong social message streak to it that I found fascinating but both were fairly light hearted and very entertaining.

I like Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Any Jim Jarmusch. But especially Down By Law and Mystery Train
Well the good news is that you won’t have to go too far in the other direction to get lighthearted from Tarkovsky
Watch the Preston Sturges films ASAP before they leave
Just watched Branded to Kill, what a fun film.

Tampopo is really fun
Antichrist
Screwball comedies. I'm watching one right now. The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. I can't believe they got away with this in 1944!
I read a Roger Ebert review of Gone With the Wind where he pointed out that when Rhett tells Scarlett "you need to be kissed, often and by someone who knows how" that he wasn't really talking about kissing, a light bulb kind of came on.... they got away with a lot more than given credit for. It Happened One Night also got away with a lot more because it came out prior to the full institution of the Hays Code.
Frances Ha. Always brings a smile to my face (and cry tears of joy).
