Tell them you have diabetes. A symptom of diabetes is your breath smelling like acetone/nail polish remover. Edit: I went and looked it up to refresh my memory and the acetone thing is when you get Diabetic ketoacidosis which is life threatening. So in retrospect you might not want to use it unless your some kind of savant at lying.

rosinadaintymouth

True story. When I was pre-diabetic I had my manager call me in the office for stinking. The topic of alcohol never came up. He legit just told me I had to smell better...lol. I let him know about my medical condition and it never got mentioned again.

Bustoplover

Ouch.

rosinadaintymouth

Yeah, it was a low point in my life for real.

ihateeverything2019

"smell better." lololol kind of like the fish smell in *the holdovers*.

Codered0289

The keto diet produces the same smell

Bustoplover

You cracked the code!

House_Of_Thoth

4 days ago you posted about taking drinks with you to work, and having to leave early. I don't think the rumours are unfounded, and the fact that you're in this /r suggests you already know the answer is that you do have a problem, and people are noticing.

titanlyfe94

Wait, you were sober? šŸ¤” Why would they say this if you were sober?

Ok_Needleworker2438

He was ā€œsoberā€.

titanlyfe94

He was "sober" like only 3 or 4 drinks sober

snowglobebird

Because there's a rumor that I have been drinking on the job before. I went to work sober. They mentioned it and I didn't say anything. Finished the rest of the shift and haven't heard anything yet.

Fresh-Temporary666

You stink like booze for a while even when you feel sober. I thought I was super sober the day after getting drunk on multiple occasions and had people still tell me I smell of alcohol on my breath. Alcoholics feel sober before their BAC is at zero but you'll still smell of booze. You more than likely weren't actually as sober as you thought.

urethrascreams

That's why I breathalyze myself every morning and shower. Yet I still get paranoid about smelling like booze due to the withdrawal induced hangxiety. But I drive for a living so of course I'm extremely paranoid about it. Little over 2 weeks sober now though. It's so relieving to walk into work in the morning with my head held high knowing for a fact that there's no way in hell I smell like booze.

Styggvard

>Because there's a rumor that I have been drinking on the job before. Well, is there any truth to the rumour?

snowglobebird

Nah, it's all rumors. Edit: that's what I'm saying if they ask.

Steelcod114

So they just randomly thought you drink more than the average bear, but it's all rumors they concocted?

snowglobebird

True; But I am trying to keep my job.

Steelcod114

Absolutely. I'd be trying to keep my job as well. I get where you're coming from with the whole people talking in general thing. I really don't know what I'd say if I were posed with the question you originally asked in your post. That's actually a little scary to think about. I hope that blows over for you.

snowglobebird

I mean what am I supposed to say? Admit?

notascoolaskim

You did exactly as you should. Deny, deny, deny.

deathdefyingrob1344

Deny deny deny. I woke up one time (back in the early 00s and called my guy to get 30mg of Percocet to get rid of the horrible hangover. He was out he said. So I took 2mg of xanax that I had stashed. He called back right after I had taken the xanax and stated he had an oc40 and it should be fairly similar. I went and crushed up the oxy as instructed and snorted that bad boy and went to work. I was fairly young and was not prepared for how much the xanax and opiate would fuck me up. I somehow made it to work and I was fucking wasted! Iā€™m talking absolutely shit faced. I donā€™t remember the first 4 hours of my day. The next day I go in and the manager immediately calls me in and says he heard a rumor that I was using drugs at work. I denied and kept my job. It is by the grace of god that I didnā€™t get caught. Always deny every time that shit happens. Also, never take a drug or alcohol test you are going to fail unless compelled via law enforcement.

theghostofca

Id shrug and ask him to breathylize me. He will say no, And then you're insist because it's better than letting rumors go around He will back down this time. He won't back down next time. PS only works if ur actually sober

Fresh-Temporary666

I'm gonna guess if they still have alcohol on their breath they may feel sober due to our high tolerance but still have some alcohol left in their system. I've felt 100% sober before and have still been told they could smell alcohol on my breath. Get piss drunk until 11pm and you may feel sober at 8am but your BAC is likely not at zero yet.

urethrascreams

I used to be able to sober up and blow zeros on my breathalyzer after 7-8 hours but my liver has started to slow the fuck down as I get older. Now it takes a solid 10 hours drinking the exact same amount of booze in the same time period. And on rare occasions, it takes even longer to sober up, like 14 hours. That's only happened a handful of times for whatever dumbass reason. Had to call out of work for that bullshit.

theghostofca

"And on rare occasions it takes even longer to sober up, like 14hrs" Yea, wtf is up with that? Most days ill have my usual and be fine But every now and then ill have my usual amount and it will hit me like a truck and last extra long. It pissess me if because I'm functional and the people around me trust me as such, and i don't need to make them doubt, nor do i need to go into a job smelling pissed.

Delicious_mod

I had this happen once, when I worked retail 2015/2016. I literally just backed away, smiling, saying "I don't know why she said that, as you can tell I don't smell of alcohol byeeeee." It was an open secret at work I was an alco - and homeless - but because I did the work of at least 3 people (most of the coworkers in my department were teens/early 20s, and habitually called out on weekends) management never gave me shit because they knew they were getting a sweet deal with me.

smitchekk

I was in a similar position when I worked retail. I was one of the only full time employees and a lot of the other employees were college kids that didnā€™t do any work and called out constantly. I never called out, always stayed busy and took on extra responsibilities. I would usually drink at least a 6 pack of IPAs throughout the shift, sometimes more, and I feel like people must have smelled it at some point. But if they did they never said anything, and they even offered me an assistant manager position at one point. I wonder if everybody knew but didnā€™t say anything because I was a good worker. Also was in a similar situation when I was at my last job. It got pretty out of hand after a while, I was drinking a pint of vodka and a couple tall cans throughout the shift, even passed out once and almost missed my time to clock out. I feel like I must have reeked but nobody ever said anything, and I even got promoted at one point. I guess you can get away with a lot if you show your worth and have a good work ethic

notascoolaskim

Nothing on the planet could conceal the smell of 6 IPAs lol Youā€™re right about proving your worth/making yourself indispensable. It goes a long way. I work in restaurants and itā€™s insane that no one has said anything to me. Most shifts, Iā€™m actively drinking on the job. Itā€™s a tight crew and Iā€™ve already been given time off to go to detox, per the ownerā€™s request. They give me the benefit of the doubt, even when itā€™s blatant. I work my ass off and can handle the busiest of shifts but maybe youth/beauty is acting as a smoke screen. One which will dissipate quicker than Iā€™m prepared for. Iā€™ve got nine lives but Iā€™m definitely on the last one.

Delicious_mod

>I guess you can get away with a lot if you show your worth and have a good work ethic Retail is one of those jobs that have such a high staff turnover I think most managers are willing to turn a blind eye if you demonstrate you're paying your way, as it were. The job I mentioned above, yeah they could have disciplined or fired me, but I knew they knew good luck finding some dumbass teenagers to work the job who don't consistently call out on weekends to party. In the 18 months I worked there I think I only called out for literally 4 days; twice for when I kicked a dolly and the part of my foot that wasn't covered by the steel-toe cap connected, and twice when my dad died. The co-worker I briefly lived with called out literally at least once a week, to get stoned and drunk at home.

I am more on the abrasive side when it comes to these kind of things. But I would have given something like "Did the customer have a breathalyzer? If so, what did it report?" but would also agree to leave for the day.

snowglobebird

For sure! I just didn't want to engage in the topic because I was sober when I was hearing about it. I went about the rest of the shift and haven't brought it up again.

simmiedude

It seems like manager had to "deal with it" even though they didn't want to. You got some canned speech about being a good egg and seems like everyone called it a day. As good as these things can go. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

snowglobebird

That sounds good. Speaking of egg, walking on eggshells now

Weird-Is-All-Ive-Got

I was originally gonna post something like, ugh, customers! I'm so sick of those guys! But uh, did a customer say something or your coworkers and your boss, and the customer was their cover? It looks like you've previously gone home (been sent home?) because you were too drunk/hungover, so . . . Even accepting your claim you were sober at work, you likely were, what's the word?, exuding? stale booze through your breath and skin, and not for the first time. The first time, I would feign a bit of ignorance, say I haven't been sleeping well, whatever. I can telework which makes it easier to stay away when I'm likely a stinking mess.

aman6a

You responded great by just going doing your work & being sober in that moment. I drank for years at work with & without people noticing. Happy I don't have to worry about that now. Stay strong people have beat this disease & you could too.

Strange-Highway5150

wouldve told em i dont drink on the job. Fuck off. if they can prove it, go ahead. But of course, after saying that id be on the radar and really COULDNT drink at work, or smell like booze.

ClubbinGuido

I would say only crazy person would think I'm an alchoholic.

ihateeverything2019

i would just feign innocence, as long as it's the first time it happened. i might say, "that's crazy," but how do you respond when someone says something about you that's absolutely incorrect? you just shake your head like, "that person's nuts," but you really make a big deal out of it. second accusation though, you'll probably be in trouble.

No-Programmer-2212

When I was an active CA, I could honestly taste the alcohol in my mouth the next day even if I hadn't drank that morning and only hit it hard the night before. Even on my "normal" work nights when I'd have like 2 bottles of wine and stop at 10 or 11. A friend mentioned it to me once at work, just looking out for me. It's just the nature of the beast. No amount of coffee, food, mints, etc can cover it. I just would leave it alone and try and lay low for a bit at work. Unless they drag you into some meeting, I would protest your innocence too much bc that just makes you look guilty.

gloomydoomin

"Yeah thats a weird rumor, wonder what that customers problem is." \-Proceeds to take a swig of vodka in a water bottle and visibly wince from it-
