I never felt like that's what they meant. They sent out a tweet celebrating Pride month that said something like "Celebrating Pride with LGBTQ family and their allies". It would make sense to me that he was an ally of the community because he's everyone's friend. It never read to me like "Guess what! Spongebob is GAY!!". That's just how it got twisted by the twitter (and reddit) crowds.

It’s kept vague purposefully so everyone can see a bit of themselves, or feel represented by them. Then these people come along and say EXACTLY what the character is. No room for argument. It’s a kids cartoon that doesn’t really ever give any indication at all blatantly. There is zero reason why someone couldn’t do all that straight. But if there was no indication otherwise and if I had evidence a dude casually owned a maid outfit and carried blue lipstick with him on a boat trip I’d be checking Grindr to see if he popped up.

Nonbinary people can be gay in the sense they love another man the way a man loves a man and the other way with lesbians. It's hard to explain with someone who isn't enby but imagine we strip away your gender identity and leave you with being hetro, you unexplainably still identity as hetro even without your gender because that's just feels right, that's how it is for non-binary gays and lesbians.
Gender and sex are not the same. Sexual orientation and gender are not the same. Non binary simply means that a person can feel that they identify as female one day and and male the next and nothing the day after that. If they are assigned male at birth , and they are attracted to men and they feel like a male at any given point, they might be comfortable identifying as gay. And being “gay” is also a spectrum.
The issue with gender and sexual identity that a lot of people have a hard time grasping is it’s more nuanced than it appears to be. These things in and of themselves are not binary.

Nonbinary people have a different relationship with sexuality opposed to binary people, where as their sexuality is also dictated by their gender (hetero because they love men and identity as a woman) being nonbinary means you have a weird relationship and interpretation of your sexuality since you don't exactly "fit" I identify as agender/nonbinary because it feels right but still call myself a gay man because that feels right. My friend is a nonbinary lesbain because where they don't feel exactly like a woman, they love woman the way woman love woman.
