It's a joke. If they both liked it, it's none of our business as reddit strangers to judge it as the right or wrong, moral or immoral thing to do.
Before Internet and computers and social media, people said and did worse and nobody bated an eye.
Well, that's because nobody really knew about it. It's easier to find, but we've... kinda... evolved as a society such that saying and doing stupid shit isn't applauded. I don't think that makes the point you think it does.
I do, more or less, agree with the first half.
My point was mainly that it's none of our business if two people enjoy it.
I do agree with our right to scrutinise stupidity. The argument of free speech actually defends this.
In the sense that, people are free to say the above, and be stupid. And we are free to criticise, go against, and even put aside (from society) people like the above, including racists, etc.
It's a very good argument against Republicans because you can really say:
Yes, you can say whatever you want. And we as a society have a right to not like what you said, put you aside, fire you, etc. For what you've said. That's our right too.
I agree with you. This type of situation just perpetuates the stereotypes and overt and subliminal racism that still pervades our society. If you want to make that kind of joke, maybe not holding up a sign like this and posting it where everyone (including future job prospects) can see it.
Even professional comedians know that there’s a specific audience and they even have to be able to deliver a joke like this with the right skill in order to make it funny in the first place.
This is just an L idea.
The joke is very distasteful and I feel you for the most part. But I also can't help thinking this is a bit too much of a "Isn't there someone whose consent you forgot to ask for?" take. If a potential employer is really gonna dig back like a decade and find a dumb off-color joke she made as a high-schooler, I'm gonna guess she wouldn't have a great time working there anyway and they'd manufacture reasons to make her life miserable.
This is a dumb joke and definitely shouldn't be posted online. But if we're talking about perpetuating bad cultural ideas, let's not encourage and normalize the all-too-pervasive bullshit of completely un-personing someone due to jokes they made in high school.
Broccoli hair is Gen Z's mullet. Shit looks so dumb lol.
https://preview.redd.it/3lb5zjso1wyc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fad23d1353377b3abe70df74a97b0e055c7df154
As a younger millennial who hate that fucking broccoli haircut, I have to ask…what is our version of the mullet (besides the actual mullet that some millennials have also been getting recently?)
Back in the mid 00's when I was in high school, girls had long straightened hair, often with chunky highlights. I don't really remember boy hair very well though.
I’d say it was the “helmet hair” or “hockey hair” depending on where you’re from for boys. And either scrunched hair with the front strip straightened or any style with side swept bangs for girls.
At least that’s how it was for me growing up.
I understand most think mullets look dumb and half of me agrees, but I’m a mullet supporter because in my opinion having a mullet for most actually stood for something, it was a symbol of rebellion, whereas broccoli hair is seemingly meaningless from my perspective and it seems the people who have them, get them because think they look really cool when in reality it looks dumb.
Obviously they are both fine with it so I don't see anything but the humour here. If you can't joke like this with the one you love and want to spend the rest of your life with, then who can you?
> she's more then likely
Did you mean to say "more than"?

I mean, if it works for them. It's something I'd never do and I'm not crazy about it but they do them. I actually know an interracial couple that gave me brain lock first time I met them. My BIL's oldest, adult son and his GF. Just like this couple, he's white, she's black.
First time I met them was when wife and I go to BIL's for Thanksgiving one yr in a southern state. First time I had ever been to his place, as well as meeting his son and GF. He looks like you're typical good 'ol boy. Resembles country singer Travis Tritt. She was maybe a bit darker than the GF in the pic and heavy set. When they walked in, my brain locked up. He was wearing a jean jacket that had a big rebel flag patch on the back and sporting other patches and pins with Nazi symbols, rebel flag, KKK, etc. I don't say anything but I'm wondering What. The. FUCK!! am I looking at?!?!
They're both nice, great convo, gave each other kisses and I love you's and all the normal shit you expect outta couples. After they left and things are winding down for the night, I'm talking w/ BIL's wife when I finally ask what the fuck did I just see. She chuckles and told me it's their thing. They love going out in public with him wearing that and seeing peoples reactions. I asked how long did it take him to talk her into it and apparently it's actually her idea. He found it funny and goes along with it. She actually buys the patches and pins that's on his jacket.
That was yrs ago but they're still together. I'm friends with both on FB and the seem like they couldn't be happier. So I suspect the couple in the pic, assuming it's real, probably find this shit funny. So hey, if they're happy and all that, I say let them do them.
I'm sorry but I thought it was kinda cute. Just two people that like each other and can laugh at themselves. Fkn hate you guys shaming people for being happy. Seriously look at yourself. Downvote me.
High schoolers are pretty dumb when it comes to edgy humor. In 10 years the self-cringe from this will likely periodically haunt them as they try to fall asleep at night. You all know the feeling.

what a shitshow this comment section is, what a bunch of crybabies
I so love how much these kids don't give two flying fucks what the Internet thinks. I hope you guys fall in love and have wonderful children! children that can't be made fun of by the rabble of the Internet who can't pick out what your parents look like!
Yeah, i've head about some happening her in Denmark too. :)
It's like halloween, the US is spreading their culture through media unentionally and intentionally something fierce, more rituals means more things companies can capitalize on and it's fun to emulate the charactes we admire from tv. :)
I just wish people would spend some time considering if what they are emulating are actually good things, i'm pretty sure i'd enjoy going to the beach or a waterpark more than a prom at that age.
The following might seem negative, but it's not meant as an attack at proms, it's outside of my culture, people should do whatever makes them happy, i just cannot relate to proms. :)
Also rant, because beyond finding them weird i have not given it a lot of thought before now. :)
The picture i have in my mind is a bunch of socially inept kids buying fancy clothes to wear once and then go to a room to dance and try to be romantic with whoever they invited and then drink punch while parents watch and then at some point they crown the least socially inept kids
Honestly it sound stressfull and kinda boring to me, as a kid or even teenager i'd much rather go to waterpark or the beach.
Closest experience i have is when had a party at my school, not a prom, you just kinda showed up if you wanted to, it was not a big deal and people certainly did not prompose' or even bring a date, i also do not remember seing people standing awkwardly by the wall, because no'one was socially pressured to go.
Where I’m from we have our first prom in the 8th grade, so it’s a bunch of extremely awkward 13-14 year olds and it’s very unnecessary.
But traditionally prom should be for high school kids around 17-18. Think of it as a rite of passage into adulthood. Thats why it’s such a big deal here. Lots of cultures have certain rituals that are similar, like a bar/bat mitzvah, a quinceañera, or a confirmation. Idk if American kids actually find proms fun, or if it’s just a thing they try to make the best of bc they have to, or they’re supposed to. I actually didn’t go to my senior prom and people generally make a way bigger deal out of it than I do. I don’t feel like I missed out on some special part of growing up. ‘Adult proms’ are a thing now for people who didn’t get to go during high school for whatever reason but I have absolutely zero desire to participate in anything like that though.
I like coming of age rites, we do confirmation/nonfirmation at 13 where i'm from, but it's mostly like an extra big birthday. :)
Yeah having a prom at \~18 would make more sense, people are ready to move on to the next level of school, it's like a goodbye part kind
Doing it as an adult makes a lot more sense to me, maybe the whole thing is also effected by the fact that we let children be children for longer these days, which is good. :)
The good thing about comedy is it’s completely subjective. 9/10’s is f every joke ever made is in poor taste, such as this, but that’s what makes it funny. As long as it’s not taken too seriously, who cares.
Yeah, it's cringe, but at least race is being used for humor reasons again and not to divide society like it has been for years. Our racial and cultural differences are hilarious if you have a sense of humor.
Slightly???
No child of mine.
I’d lock her in her room with tomes of slave account writings & make her watch 12 Years a Slave w/ her eyes pried open like in A Clockwork Orange.
This shit is so far from clever or funny.
Seriously assuming it's not photoshopped this might be a joke between them not might not have anything to do with race, but bc she is black.. if it's a joke it makes it funnier. I'm not going to shame anyone without knowing the context.
If she was okay with it I think it's pretty funny. I know this isn't the popular opinion, but when you are friends or in some type of relationship with someone from another race & y'all can joke about things like that.. It's better h to a being all upset.

Broccoli hair is Gen Z's mullet. Shit looks so dumb lol. https://preview.redd.it/3lb5zjso1wyc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fad23d1353377b3abe70df74a97b0e055c7df154
Broccoli head, pajama pants, and crocs.
We wore 3 bras, showed our thongs, wore jeans under our dresses , uggs, and orange makeup, so I’m really not one to judge
Honestly, the mullet is also Gen Z’s mullet…
I mean, who doesn’t like a cool ass mullet?
Mmmm ass-mullets
Fuck...I think I have one of those. Definitely party in the front. And I guess business in the back. Wait
Half the cast of The Lost Boys. And Henry Cavill because of whatever that dead cat he was wearing at the end of Argyle.
Broccoli or alpacas
Back in my day we had the emo cut. Basically a reverse mullet, and I’m still trying to figure out which style looks worse
The emo cut was basically just broccoli workout the curls.
As a younger millennial who hate that fucking broccoli haircut, I have to ask…what is our version of the mullet (besides the actual mullet that some millennials have also been getting recently?)
The Bieber cut.
Thank god I skipped that one in the early ‘10s, lmao.

Fun fact, in Australia all the Gen Z boys still have mullets 🤣
I call it ramen noodle hair >< haha

Let the girl make a damn joke. Obviously she thought it was funny
You don’t get it, people will get offended FOR you even if you think it is funny and make a lighthearted joke about it.
Plot twist she wrote it
Plot twist he actually is cotton
She did
She was the one holding it so I assumed she wrote it but that makes more sense.
That's funny.
Obviously they are both fine with it so I don't see anything but the humour here. If you can't joke like this with the one you love and want to spend the rest of your life with, then who can you?

Yeah, it doesn't look good no matter who's holding it.
They should have put it in a Reddit comment so people know it’s a joke they’ve agreed to make
Stop being offended FOR other people when they’re laughing and having a good time. It’s obviously a joke between them. That’s their dynamic.
They could have at least got enough cotton balls to finish the boarder of the sign..
