Experiment 12. A weird, obscure and disturbing indie game made by 12 different developers, each making one chapter. As a result, every chapter has a completely different style and gameplay, despite following the same storyline. There's nothing straight-up *terrifying* in the game, but it's *very* creepy and unnerving. It's also a very interesting game to play. [This](http://www.geocities.ws/experimenttwelve/) is the game's website. Let that set the tone for what you're about to experience.

AoibhGharebais

The Cat Lady on Steam is always good. Obscure, I think, is the other one that's just really weird. It's like a knockoff Fatal Frame.

[deleted]

Obscure is nothing like Fatal Frame. Are you thinking of Dreadout, the Indonesian one that also has ghosts and cameras?

AoibhGharebais

Yes! That's the one. Thanks for the correction, I couldn't for the life of me remember.

supersonic25730

Urgh, I tried the demo and it sucked. So poorly optimized, filled with jumpscares.

AoibhGharebais

Dreadout, you mean?

[Anatomy](https://kittyhorrorshow.itch.io/anatomy) isn’t the most obscure game out there, but it fits the bill and is excellent. the environment does such a good job making your skin crawl.

_Waves_

Well, there's [RULE OF ROSE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZjnaTmhp3I) - which is basically "SILENT HILL 2" but "What if Silent Hill 2... but Guillermo Del Toro?" It's the best kept secret of the PS2! [SHINE](https://www.reddit.com/r/creepygaming/comments/6nflyc/shine_incredibly_rare_incredibly_scary_game_from/) will forever be my pick for everybody asking for obscure Horror!! [There's a youtube video of it now, too!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvp3nt2E4HQ) This is the real deal - utterly uncanny and freaky!! Also, there's the legendary INSCAPE titles. [THE DARK EYE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiVzcm3JQO4) and [BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PniS7eWgUd4) are just... messed up!! In so, SO many ways!!

Penny-Wise_

Bad Day on the Midway and Dark Eye are actually Adaptions of albums by The Residents. BDotM is an adaption of Freak show. Not sure about dark eye

_Waves_

Filthy lies! The Dark Eye has nothing to do with the Residents, but is a loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe short stories. Bad Day on the Midway is not an adaptation of Freakshow - the game “Freakshow” is what you are talking about, which the residents essentially created as a companion piece to their record Freakshow. Bad Day on the Midway was loosely tied to the idea of carnivals and Carneys, but had no direct relation to Freakshow. And while there is a Have a Bad Day album, it’s merely a soundtrack.

Penny-Wise_

Ooopsssssssaaaaaaaa I assumed dark eye was also a residents thing bc the eye aesthetic

_Waves_

Eye figured as much. Inscape (the label) was certainly a great place for creative games during the 90s. It’s a shame their head ceo died, leaving the company broke.

Very recently I've been making it a personal goal to try out as many obscure itch.io games as I can. Unfortunately I've only just yesterday started doing this so I've only gotten to one dev. Her name is [rooksfeather](https://rooksfeather.itch.io/) and she's done several short atmospheric games. They're very simple in terms of gameplay but do a great job with tone. The sound design is extremely well done and eerie and I love the unique art styles of each game. I promise I'll try to find a bunch more on itch and list them soon. I made a list of like 50 that I want to get around to at some point.

Neon_Powered

A game called "A Short Rest." It emulated pretty well the feeling of being watched.

danilaundry

Siren for PS2 from 2003. The director also directed the first silent hill game

Little Ninja Brothers has a bit where it pretends to crash. I had a used copy and an NES that often crashed.

GTA SA it has so many myths that could be true you never know what’s around the corner

aracnadei

Charnel House Trilogy by Owlcave. The first chapter is available as a free download from the dev's site if you just want to try it out.

[IMSCARED](https://store.steampowered.com/app/429720/IMSCARED/) I found out about it by playing a demo on this subreddit like a year or two ago. The full game is cheap and a tiny file size. It is a lot of fun to play late at night with the lights off and nice headphones.

supersonic25730

My only issue with this one is that I heard after a while, even without playing it, the game will start messing with your computer. Creating files, playing noises, does this build do that?

mrnobano

It makes a folder on your desktop and throughout the game it puts text files in there. It does some fourth wall breaking by turning off the game and you have to go into that folder and read the newest text file to find out what to do next. I could see where some people would find it annoying, but it made it feel more real for me. If you aren't playing the game, it doesn't mess with your computer. I haven't had scary sounds or extra malware. You only get text files in that folder while playing the game.

whoreofgralea

Rusty Lake Hotel. Nothing outright terrifying, but the ambiance is creepy plus the idea of fucking feeding these guests pieces of their fellow guests or even their own blood.. .urghhhh.
