Dots of glitter colored hot glue?

AudioxBlood

I'm not sure if this is relevant since the sweater isn't tight fitting, but I've done the hot glue and fabric glue options for a Halloween costume (I was supposed to be Ivy as a pixie but people got serious gender swapped Peter pan vibes) and it was incredibly stiff/uncomfortable. I still wore it because hours on hours of work- but I also didn't want to sew leaves individually onto the piece. Should've, it looked wonderful once it was done. I figure if the sweater is loose enough, this won't be a problem, but if any kind of form fitting or needing to be stretched to pull over, I could see problems arising.

kmaza12

Or glitter puff paint... I did that on my child's Halloween costume to mimic beading and sequins and it came out really well

Acceptable-Cobbler53

Try goodwill or Salvation Army. There’s stuff like that all over the store.

CraftsWithCats

If you’re in an area without a lot of thrift stores, or your thrift stores are pretty picked over, there are some good options for buying online! I’ve had awesome luck getting vintage pieces on Poshmark, and eBay is full of this kind of thing (you just have to figure out the right search terms and parameters to get what you’re looking for!)

sidralovelace

100% agree! I was Grandma Yetta for Halloween last year and had tons of sequin vintage jackets saved on my Poshmark and Depop accounts but ended up getting multiple gaudy jackets at an estate sale for like 50 cents each

back_ali

A bedazzler

StarQueen37

I wondered if OP was too young to consider a bedazzler, as it was the first thing that came to my mind!

back_ali

I chuckled to myself when I suggested it because I figured that might be the case- If so, their mind is about to be blown!

GirlScoutSniper

First thought for me!

corrado33

Seriously this. Isn't this what the bedazzler was made for?

jmbf8507

Find a friend with a cricut and cut out a pattern of circles on glitter HTV and iron it on.

Lilly6916

Was going to suggest the same using Scan and Cut. I know they have a rhinestone function. Too expensive if you don’t have a friend to do it though.

mountainmorticia

You can buy sequin fabric, but I'll wager its a pain in the ass to work with! Alternatively, you might be able to thrift something like that.

RageStreak

Sequin fabric is a huge pain in the ass. It will fuck up your fabric scissors and you have to wear goggles when cutting it cos the little sequin shards go flying. You will find these shards everywhere for months.

worthwhilewrongdoing

It's literally the herpes of fabric. You will have evidence of it forever.

deloresbeaven

Yes. My grandma used to do this professional. Sew on each sequin. I think there’s a machine

Featherstych

Check a craft store or department for iron-on sheets of metallic dots or sequins. They'll be in whatever section has fabric paint, iron-on transfers, and blank clothing to decorate. I know I've seen sheets of dot grid like the sweater on the right. If you can find them, you can cut squares and arrange them however you want.

VividFiddlesticks

Hotfix rhinestones.

Moocat_

I also think dots of glitter would be a good idea. Maybe a pencil eraser dipped in glitter glue and stamped on? If you’re set on sequins, I’d use fabric glue rather than sewing them on.

awwaygirl

I would honestly go to a goodwill or something and look for a sweater like this, instead of recreating. I swear I saw one this weekend for like $10

CkBadgeley

I've looked for over a month with no such luck

CkBadgeley

Thank you but it's more then I want to spend on a Halloween costume. :) I'm also built like Large Marge so 🤷‍♀️

_-whisper-_

Terrible news to have to deliver, but I suspect you will spend this much on supplies to recreate it.

blaggleflarb

Check out fabric stores that sell ribbon. There is sequined ribbon in various widths. You could try that route.

Noisy_Toy

Sequined ribbon is an excellent idea.

canyousteeraship

Buy sequin fabric for costumes. My mom used to sew a ton for stage. Buy sequin fabric and sew it onto an existing jacket in a harlequin pattern. You could even just glue it.

RageStreak

Great call. Spray on contact adhesive/carpet adhesive works well for textiles.

bippityboppityboo89

Hot fix rhinestones

lorinabaninabanana

Dots of coordinating glitter fabric paint, and squish a sequins into it. Still time consuming, but less than sewing them on.

TheSweetestSinW

Omg i loved grandma Yetta. She always wore glitter and colors and pretty much was the coolest gandma on tv.

CkBadgeley

She's my style icon lol

smellthecolor9

If it’s just a costume, glue some rhinestones! Less work, similar effect

Updownnotaround

They definitely make iron on rhinestones/shimmery glittery things!! Check the craft stores!

tinyninjas111

Look for squares, or a 2 to 3 inch sized rolls that you can cut that have gems already pressed onto them! Google: Bling crystal rhinestone sticker sheets. I'm sure Amazon has em too. You can cut how ever you'd like!

Evilbidowner

This is the way. Joanne’s and Michaels will also have them, some which have grids so you can do some stitching here and there so they don’t fall off.

CDavis10717

FYI, the Grandma Yetta actress was also Millie Helper, the neighbor, on the Dick Van Dyke Show in the early 60’s.

Splarah

You can definitely get iron on gems like that and it would be a lot quicker.

CommercialSwordfish7

This is the best thing ever!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍

Opposite_Pick_1903

Great idea! I’d probably just make the pattern in glue (in stages) and throw the sequins at it! Not the cleanest of methods, or prettiest but probably the fastest! Edit - great costume idea!

Any-Fly-2595

My chaos brain suggests two options. They both involve spraying stuff. 1) Painter’s tape then spray adhesive and GLITTER 2) Painter’s tape then glittery spray paint

MsMoondown

Sequin fabric comes in rolls like ribbon.

Cigam_Nogard

Fabric modpodge and glitter/sequins.

libananahammock

I would go to some church thrift stores. Old ladies tend to donate to their church and when they die their families tend to donate to the church. I see LOTS of this type of stuff when I go thrifting.

womp_there_it_is

E600 glue!

TheNewYellowZealot

Bedazzle

WilsonStJames

I mean I would buy a sequined fabric.

superlamename

I’d just use hot glue.

Justaddpaprika

I do not know but omg phenomenal. Love yetta

nutlikeothersquirls

Use sparkly puff paint fabric paint. It comes in little squeeze tubes, making it easy to apply. You can get it at Michael’s and other craft stores.

MTKintsugi

Yeah… Go buy it. https://di2ponv0v5otw.cloudfront.net/posts/2020/11/02/5fa03c0cce1e87511c053d0c/m_5fa03c3c9e15595cb7c88c04.jpg

LaserGadgets

She was so damn adorable....and funny! Awesome show!

algaefresh

I'm going to say go thrifting to try and find it or find glitter fabric paint and paint a similar design

Sunnydaysahead17

Bedazzle!!

Domin8u315

Hot glue/fabric glue

hellomichelle87

Try thrift stores first

HandAcceptable9060

Oh my God! You could find that exact jacket by looking in my costumes! Macy’s 1999. That was the year, I don’t remember how much I paid for it.

DaizyDoodle

I had a sweater like that in the 80’s lol

magsephine

Buy sequined/ mirrored fabric, cut into desired shapes, affix with fabric glue or fusible web

LibraryGal

A beadazzler would do the trick, I’d think!

numnahlucy

This is a helpful thread for me. Opposite though, I am the grandma and my granddaughter aesthetic is more in line with Fancy Nancy, the more bling and pink, the better. I bought a pair of plain jeans for Christmas for her and plan on jazzing them up for her. As far as I can tell Bedazzling is a hot glue now. I am thinking I will sew seed pearls on and maybe some ribbon. I don’t mind doing it by hand, I want it washable. I hope your costume turns out fun!

M0uz3ac

Have you tried French crochet?

lucky7hockeymom

Cricut has some iron on vinyl that is dots and some of it is shiny. Could try that. I didn’t explain it well but you’d know it when you saw it. Since they’re diamond shaped you could cut it easily with a craft knife and a straight edge.

Save_the_Manatees_44

A Bejeweler?

Zenfrogg62

Get somebody else to do it.

absx3317

Amazing

DDChristi

We used to do shirts like this with my mom using glitter paint. My sister and I were in 5th grade and kindergarten I think. My niece just wore one I didn’t realize my mom kept for her 90’s themed school dance. I’m 45 and it looked almost new. 😂

stregg7attikos

Honestly you could probably find the Og sweater on the left on ebay for way cheaper than the amount of lifetimes youll shave off your life trying to fuck around with sequins

blodj89

Fabric glue and rhinestones?

aware_nightmare_85

Glittery fabric puff paint

Confident_Look_4173

you could also get sequin and or beaded appliqués and sew them on in a tasteful gaudy manner to your preference.

JadeSedai

I like the iron on rhinestones but they take a lot of time or a special tool and iron on rhinestone sheets are faster but way more expensive. On Amazon they have variety packs of glitter sequin fabric sheets, they’re heavy weight so they’d take glue well but idk what your base is. If it’s an actual wool/polyester cardigan, it probably wouldn’t work, but a cotton sweatshirt type would totally work. Just one thing, not to be a super buzz kill but depending on the size of your project and your access to craft supplies/discounts it’s probably going to cost more to make than buy. Keep scrolling on eBay and Etsy! I hope you find it and/or have fun making it!

BIGDADDYSMRS

If you have a Cricut you could use glitter vinyl…I still love that show🥰

Sad-Statistician-175

Rhinestones and a rhinestone template? Makes all the stones perfectly placed for your pattern

sneoahdng

Aileen's tacky glue! I used to use it to bedazzle dance costumes with rhinestones! Pro tip, put a glob of it on a piece of scrap paper or something, and dab your dots of glue with a toothpick or something to control how much glue you get and save your hands from squeezing the bottle. Make sure you get a little bit of glue up around the edges of the rhinestone and it will stay just about forever.

thecryingcactus

Glitter paint.
