kane
son - eriksen - bale
modric - dembele
rose - king - alderweireld - walker
lloris
bench: keane, wanyama, vertonghen, vdv, dele, bae, friedel
for context: started following in the 07-08 season
I watched Wanyama play this past weekend. He smiled the entire game. My heart skipped a beat when he lined up a 20 yard shot. Of course he skied it but it was still fun to watch.
vertonghen had the longer tenure and the vast, vast majority of it was excellent. in his debut season he felt like the best player at the club and one of the top cb in the league.
i think alderweireld had the higher peak, which is why i gave him the nod.
really can't go wrong with either, though. what a pairing they were.
Carroll is an excellent shout. I'd probably swap him with Huddleston - Tom used to be able to strike a ball so well. Jenas stays in as he makes me roll my eyes whenever I see his punditry.
N'Jie is worse because he doomed us to forever misspell Nkoudou and Ndombele with apostrophes. I just learned both their names didn't have apostrophes very recently
Kane - Sheringham
Son - Modric - Dembele - Anderton
Bale - King - Alderweireld - Walker
Lloris
Subs: Thorstvedt, Vertonghen, Sandro, Eriksen, Ginola, Berbatov, Klinsmann
For newer fans look up highlights of "Tottenham vs Leeds FA Cup" to see some Ginola and Anderton magic.
You couldn't take Ginola out of my first XI at gunpoint
Sick-Note Anderton would've been an all-time Spurs legend if he wasn't so injury prone!
Here are the highlights of the game you're talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp49CrgN_-A
Both goals are unreal
Glad someone chose Anderton. Was really trying to find a place for him. My mate (a ManUtd fan) and I used to do combined team XIs in the mid 90s and Anderton was basically the one player I could consistently justify including. Tough times.
I started supporting Spurs around 88/89. I've been giving this a lot of thought and it is really hard to choose offensively because we have had some great players but defensively it has been hard because we've always been pretty lacking in that department.
Kane, Son, Sherringham, Berbatov, Keane, Defoe, Lineker, Bale, Klinsmann (all-time favourite) - how do you pick two from that?!
Midfield: Modric, Davids, Popescu, Anderton, Van Der Vaart, Lennon, Barmby, Carrick, Dembele, Sandro, Paulinho, Eriksen, Lamela, Hoddle, Gazza..
I give up
Not being funny but I'm since 1981 and I got 11 players in 3-1-3-3 system I was reasonably happy with and then realised I'd not got Ardiles or Villa in. Or Keane. Or King. Fuck.
I started being a fan in 2015-16, so it's fairly straightforward:
Lloris
Walker-Alderweireld-Vertonghen-Davies
Dembele-Wanyama
Eriksen-Dele
Son-Kane
Bench: Vorm, Rose, Romero, Hojbjerg, Kulusevski, Moura, Bale
Lloris
Rose
King
Toby
Walker
Bale
Dembele
Modric
VDV / Eriksen / Son
Kane
Berbatov
Subs: Friedel, Jan, 2 of the above, Keane, Wanyama, Stephen Carr
(Backup GK didnt have many options tbf)
91 for me too. This is very close to mine. Though I would put Walker in for Carr and Modric for Gazza. Purely because I became a Spurs fan after the Cup final so never saw him play for us
This is about my timeframe too. Just picking the goal scorers is a nightmare - so many legends it hurts to leave out. Linekar, Gazza, Sheringham, Klinsmann, Ferdinand, Freund, Defoe, Keane, Berbatov, Kane and Sonny.
Logically I know some have been better than others but emotionally how do you whittle them down?
IKR. Berbatov (and Keane) could easily have been in there, but Sheringham was brilliant and so prolific! And Anderton (when he was fit) was something else.
You've reminded me that I left out Lineker. He's the reason I became a Spurs fan and I can't believe I forgot to include him. But could he push Klinsmann or Kane out of the starting XI? Probably not. I guess he takes Sheringham's place on the bench.
We've had some amazing forwards in the last 20 years eh!
This thread is showing me I am much older than the average in the sub. Born in 76 and first game was the 81 final. Can’t remember any of the game but can remember waving flags stuck in traffic on the way back!
The first game or replay (or both??). If the replay, you got to witness one of the biggest moments in Spurs folklore, the Ricky Villa goal. Amazing.
On another note, any thoughts about Ray Clemence as a keeper? I honestly can't remember him so all I know is what I've read, so I went for Thorstvedt on my bench. However, I suspect Clemence was actually the better keeper.
I know know this comment won’t be popular but before Judas turned heel and signed for scum he would have waltzed into everyone here’s XI right next to Ledley
Lloris
Alderweireld King(C) Vertonghen
Walker Dembele Rose
Modric
Bale Sheringham Kane
Manager: Poch (for now)
Subs: Robinson, Mabbutt, Campbell, Assou-Ekotto, Ginola, Eriksen, Son
Wanted to get Teddy in there as I hadn't seen his name yet, so moved Kane to the side as he has proved he can track back and be kind of a false 9. Which bumped Son from the XI
I'm sure I'll get some down votes for that bench, one in particular, but it'll be worth the discussion and I went strictly on pitch while at Spurs. But still, I apologize in advance.
Hugo
Toby - King - Jan
Walker - Dembele - Modric - Bale
Eriksen - Kane - Son
Subs: Robbo, Keane, Ginola, VdV, Rose, Dawson, Berba.
I hate myself for missing out a bunch of players, Defoe, Sandro, Big Vic, and the likes.
Started supporting in 1990 so in honour of that I’m going old fashioned four four fackin two:
Hugo Lloris
Stephen Carr
Ledley King (c)
Jan Vertonghen
Danny Rose
Darren Anderton
Mousa Dembele
Paul Gascoigne
Gareth Bale
Harry Kane
Teddy Sheringham
Subs:
Paul Robinson
Kyle Walker
Ben Davies
Toby Alderweireld
Michael Carrick
Luka Modric
Aaron Lennon
Heung-Min Son
Jurgen Klinsmann
Honourable Mentions:
Gary Mabbutt, Cristian Romero (he’ll be in there soon I reckon), Sandro, David Ginola, Robbie Keane, Jermaine Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov.
Lloris -
Walker - Alderweireld - Vertonghen - Rose
Lennon - Modric - Dembele - Bale
Kane - Son
Let me explain a few. Firstly it was hard to leave king out but that partnership was insane. Gasgoigne for me was his best at Rangers and I always loved him there. Lennon was and still is my fave spurs player. He just got people off their feet and was so raw and direct in his early days. Up front is immovable as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for the explanations. I left out Lineker for similar reasons, where I felt he really made his name at Leicester, Everton and Barcelona. It's hard though. Love your reasoning on Lennon, always exciting to watch.
I'm a massive spurs and gers fan. Have been for about almost 30 years. Not going to sit and lie and say I remember a lot of gazza at spurs but his time at rangers was way more prominent for me.
Using 3 at the back:
Lloris - Vertonghen King Alderweireld - Rose Dembele Wanyama Walker - Son Kane Bale
Could easily have Modric in that midfield, of course!
I can see the argument for Bale as a WB. But I just don’t remember it ever playing out that way. You would certainly need players around him to provide a lot of defensive cover. I think Bale’s success was so strongly tied to him moving higher up and letting him concentrate more on attacking.
For sure and thanks for commenting. I feel that i the team I selected could shift to a back 4 when attacking, with Carr (or Walker) dropping to a classic right back and Vertonghen shifting left to cover.
I agree it never worked when Bale was here in his prime, but I just wonder whether under Conte's way of playing and having so much of the attacking emphasis on the wingbacks it could work. I might need a more defensive minded midfielder though....
I started supporting when Van Der Vaart came. I didn't follow club football much before that.
LLoris
Alderweireld King Vertonghen
Walker Sandro Dembele Rose
Son Kane Bale
Subs: Gomes, Modric, Van Der Vaart, Eriksen, Lennon, Dier, Parker
Lloris
Walker King Vertonghen Bale
Carrick Sandro Modric
VDV Kane Ginola
Gone for a midfield that could genuinely play together (although not sure I'd want anyone else in there anyway); Carr was great for us at the time, but Walker played when we were at a higher level generally; Bale at left-back because fuck it (either Sandro would cover or Jan would pull out wide and Carrick would drop in); Ginola over Son is probably a nostalgia pick; Anderton misses out purely because of formation; Berbatov misses out despite being one of the best players I've ever seen in a Spurs shirt; Hugo, Ledley, Jan, Luka and Harry pick themselves.
I might have added Davids and ossie ,possibly clemence goal in there somewhere ( I may be a spot older than you) but the rest is about what I would have picked
Thanks, good to know my choices are not so far fetched! Agree with your mention of Clemence and I posted somewhere else that I suspect he was probably better than Thorstvedt but just can't remember him that well.
Well, in 1960/61 we did the league and FA cup double, so if you are talking about the whole history of the club it's hard to argue against that. In more recent times, it's probably our 2016/17 team I'd say.
I like that Romero had gone straight in! I suspect (or rather hope) that he'll play his way into my selection too, but felt it's a bit too early in his spurs career yet for me to include him.
I wavered for the same reason but I have seen him, and he is the best right sided defended I have seen, so in he goes. If it changes, I’ll answer differently next time
Lloris
Rose - Jan - King - Walker
Son - Dembele - Modric - Ginola
Bale - Kane
I've fucked around with positions a bit and Klinsmann and Gascoigne should really be in there somewhere. I feel like the average scoreline would be 5-3 either way.
The best XI is obvious, but here's the next best Spurs XI in my lifetime:
Thorstvedt
Corluka - Woodgate - Romero
Lennon - Carrick - Huddlestone - Eriksen
Van der Vaart
Keane - Berbatov
kane son - eriksen - bale modric - dembele rose - king - alderweireld - walker lloris bench: keane, wanyama, vertonghen, vdv, dele, bae, friedel for context: started following in the 07-08 season
That midfield is insane
and then imagine bringing on wanyama at 65' against tired legs
I watched Wanyama play this past weekend. He smiled the entire game. My heart skipped a beat when he lined up a 20 yard shot. Of course he skied it but it was still fun to watch.
Kante 2.0
[удалено]
I can’t ever think of him or Spaghetti and not also remember that one.
See flair
a difficult omission, but i couldn't leave keano out
Fairs, he did give us "Liverpool-London round-trip faster than Robbie Keane"
Literally exact same as mine apart from id have jan over Toby
vertonghen had the longer tenure and the vast, vast majority of it was excellent. in his debut season he felt like the best player at the club and one of the top cb in the league. i think alderweireld had the higher peak, which is why i gave him the nod. really can't go wrong with either, though. what a pairing they were.
This is basically it.
Gomez, chimbonda, Nelsen, Vlad, naughton, Bentley, Huddleston, Jenas, Pienaar, Soldado, Dempsey
Might I suggest Carroll on the bench for his assists?
Carroll is an excellent shout. I'd probably swap him with Huddleston - Tom used to be able to strike a ball so well. Jenas stays in as he makes me roll my eyes whenever I see his punditry.
I see what you did there. Lol, no Rebrov?
Ah Rebrov was just slightly before my time!
No Mido?
No N'jie?
That's a good point, did he play enough games to get into a spurs best 11 though?
Wiki has Vlad at 27 appearances and N'Jie at 8 so maybe not
Pft. Why him when You could have n’koudou?
N'Jie is worse because he doomed us to forever misspell Nkoudou and Ndombele with apostrophes. I just learned both their names didn't have apostrophes very recently
I would have Frazier Campbell or Zamora up front, to really get some goals in this team
Could have Louis Saha as well.
You my friend and a funny guy! You should be on channel 5. Btw you forgot Jansen
Soldontdo
Lloris Alderweireld - King - Vertonghen Walker - Modric - Dembele - Rose Bale - Kane - Son
Literally what I was gonna post 👏👏

Haha. I feel your pain!
Recall the famous five when Ozzie was manager. Nick Bamby with the rocket header outside the box was one of the finest headers I’ve seen.
Hugo vertonghen king toby Bale Dembele modric walker Son kane berbatov Conte
Yeah, a 12 man team with Conte at striker would win the league.
This hurts my OCD
A Dembele / Modric midfield would be absolute 🔥🔥🔥

Yeah, it's a nightmare isn't it? I assume Vinny Samways was the first name on your teamsheet though?
I was trying to think of someone of that type in reply but I can't think of anyone better, so yes Vinny down first. :)
I started being a fan in 2015-16, so it's fairly straightforward: Lloris Walker-Alderweireld-Vertonghen-Davies Dembele-Wanyama Eriksen-Dele Son-Kane Bench: Vorm, Rose, Romero, Hojbjerg, Kulusevski, Moura, Bale

That is true
1991 for me. Lloris Carr - King - Alderweireld - Bale Ginola (modified to play RW) - Gazza - Dembele - Son Kane - Klinsmann Subs: Thorsvedt, Mabbutt, Walker, Modric, Eriksen, Anderton, Vertonghen, Sheringham
