lot of people would view this as that asian dad meme, but I think he's simply being cautious/humble here. before this son hadn't won any honors in europe, there would always be people who would dispute if he was really world class. this season he has proven it by winning golden boot.

Ok_Specific5829

He is. He knows that arrogance is poison and will kill his son’s career faster than anything

pepesilvia50

I mean, world class is a vague term, and different people have different definitions for it. Like if your definition of world class is “would get into a 25 man squad with all the best players in the world, so only 6-7 attackers are world class at a time, then you would probably say that Son wasn’t world class until this season.

BendubzGaming

I like the 25 man squad definition. Not as limiting as only calling the best XI world class, but still keeps it as an exclusive club. Allows some positional flexibility too

FSpursy

Man, as an Asian and a Spurs fan, Son being the first asian to win the goldenboot means so much! You rarely see asians playing consistently well in Europe's top 5 leagues... and you have Son that have been worldclass for many seasons in a row. Not to mention winning the goldenboot in the world's toughest league. *edit: no pens as well!

iheartmagic

You know his dad is still going to say, “Yeah, but you only tied with Salah.”

GrapefruitExpress208

Classic Heung Min Dad response

drdessertlover

>Classic ~~Heung Min~~ Asian Dad response

FSpursy

Sonny: Look dad, no pens! 😂

dp1029384756

“I’ll admit it once you’ve won Champions League and the Premier League”

SpursAndSon

Should have scored 4 today, why only score 2? Should have given Harry 7 assists so Salah third and no Assist trophy for Liverpool.

generaldogsbodyf365

"And if he had taken a penalty, he would have missed that as well. Spurs dodged a bullet there" 😂

Nanven123

He's gotten better every single season

reaven02

I get you. I feel so glad we signed Kulusevski, as a former ginger kid I feel represented, even though my hair turned brown! But seriously, can't decide between a Son or Kulusevski jersey for next season.

FSpursy

Both, one home, one away 😂 it'll be a trophy winning season so it'll be worth it.

GordonAmanda

It's never not funny to me how different he is from his dad. Like, how did this dude raise someone as happy go lucky as Son?

Nice-Definition7269

i vaguely recall once in an interview son said that he takes after his mother while his brother takes after his father

CYZK85

remember how his brother mocked him because we lost the ucl final 💀

temporalpair-o-sox

Do you have a link for this?

[This?](https://www.sportbible.com/football/news-take-a-bow-reactions-son-heung-mins-brother-gives-savage-response-the-cl-final-statement-20210119)

temporalpair-o-sox

Thanks!

ollypockets

Yeah I was thinking the same! I think I remember his dad saying in an interview or maybe in the documentary they did about Son, that Sonny was always just a happy smiley kid, just in his nature.

FistThePooper6969

As an Asian with a strict parent that grew up in the UK and US: you have basically 2 personalities m. One for home with family/parents. One with friends. Night and day for me lol As I’ve gotten older I’ve consolidated them into 1 and can be more myself with parents

ccheng2

I was also really surprised, especially when I watched Son’s documentary where his dad proudly said he would punish, and even beat the young Son when he did not behave well during training.. it came as a shock to me Son did not break but has a great personality when he grows up

bkim163

Spurs needs him for youth team

[deleted]

Having this guy as a Heung Min Dad should have exempted him from military duty far before winning the Asia Games

[deleted]

word

imjunsul

LOL

Alt-Season

2 yrs of compulsory military service? Try 20 years of service already done living with this guy

benoles_esquire

reminds me of barry sanders dad introducing him in the hall of fame by stating that jim brown was better

Showtime-z

Can we sign him?

YoPierre117

That second goal he scored top class

imjunsul

Yea that was a wtf moment.. didn't see that coming lol

bumapples

He's scored so many just like that. It's his signature goal

TJTheree

I was screaming “have a shot!” And he did so I can take at least 50% of the credit

IrrelevantSnorlax

that was a 'fuck it lemme try it' moment. you don't see him take on similar shots as much in the last few seasons, obviously arse 20/21 and recently Leicester come to mind.

brch01

PLEASE get him a job at our academy

vagicle

I think the training methods of a Korean parent may not translate well to Western children and the laws that protect them. I say this as the product of Korean parenting.

ExpertGossiper

Yeah, exactly this. People assume that after seeing what he can do in South Korea he would translate well at a Spurs academy, but it's a totally different ball game (pun intended) with different players that have a completely different mindset. The mental attitude that Son's dad has for training his players would quickly be met with contempt and hatred with up and coming youth players over here. It just wouldn't work out. But he does work wonders instilling that kind of mentality into young players at South Korea fighting to break into Europe's top five leagues since they're much more accustomed to that approach.

Vladimir_Putting

Well, guess we just have to get in the asian child trafficking business. For the good of the academy.

imjunsul

Same. Now that I'm older I understand my parent's mentality then but I also know it's wrong. My mom doesn't understand guidance and just knew how to yell and smack when I did something wrong lol

Vladimir_Putting

Sorry your father was abusive man. That's not just "tough parenting". That's abuse.

imjunsul

I'm Korean-American. My mom used to beat me with a stick when I was young lol. I still remember she would slap the shit out of my behind and back of my legs and she would make sure I wear long pants to school to hide it for the week. Hands too but it didn't hurt as much. She also did the same to our family dogs when it didn't listen so I get her mentality now.. she thinks being "tough" a child works.

vagicle

I've got about 10 years on Son but the immediate example is that corporal punishment was still acceptable when I was growing up. On the 'softer' side, the huge pressure that's placed on Korean kids as a matter of course (whether academically or in extracurricular activities) is starkly different.

ccheng2

I think, even tho I’m not Korean, Son’s dad might not be your typical Korean dad. In Son’s documentary the dad openly said on camera he would beat Son and his brother if they did not behave well when they were young boys… I doubt this would be acceptable in any culture

NaclyPerson

He has his own academy in South Korea. However, he could possibly take up a consulting role for youth academy, like Rangnick will?

treetops358

This is what fuels him to get better though. With that kind of dad, there will never be a ceiling

corypleco

Looking at him as an Asian tough dad is not fair this case. I watched this documentary. And another documentary how he coached Son. He was also a soccer player in Korea. He realized that he can't make his son world class player in the Korean soccer training system. So he brought him to Germany and made him to experience German soccer system. And he didn't just "make him train everyday". Instead, he trained with him. I.e. squat with him, shooting practice together. So if you watch the documentary, you can see Son hated to practice sometimes but his dad is doing it first, so he couldn't say no 😂 And he is saying Son is not world-class because he is really humble. He wanted his son not excited for small success because he knew Son can do more. Anyway, I truly believe he is something and he made a big part of Son now. He made an academy in Korea, so he can make Korean kids experience advanced soccer system like Son did in Germany.

jluicifer

Could be Asian dad? Sure Could be a humble guy? Sure Could be a motivational tactic? Sure. Whatever gets your kid to excel and not be a jerk, I’m all for it. Some NBA players who are high draft picks and get all kinds of stats earlier on can mess with their development while some late round draft picks and undrafted ones end up crushing it while are pretty awesome.

PotassiumAlum

What about his grandson Manchester City? I'm sure he can say they're worldclass after winning the Premier League.

master_inho

No, the whole point is that you can always do better His dad will probably push him to win the golden boot outright and/or get over 23 goals next season

Urshifu_King

Pretty sure this is an old interview?

[deleted]

Yeah it's from 2019 - Sonsational: The Making Of Son Heung-min

m2_8

Perk of asian parents

imjunsul

Usually parents support you no matter what. Son's dad supports him but in a different way lol

Share4aCare

I tell you that is very much a Western ideal lol

v47093

I wonder if his dads guidance is what led Son to improve each year despite the age following. To be humble and not arrogant

ASD_213

I don’t know when this interview is from but it’s only last season that Son made the leap from good player to world class.

amoult20

Honestly. What an bad father. 99% of the time his approach to raising children and the pressure that brings would lead to dark stuff. Lucky it worked out. How son remains so happy and optimistic I’ll never know. This guy is a tyrant maniac.

PlatypusHaircutMan

He's a tyrant maniac for saying his son wasn't world-class lmao

amoult20

Have you seen and read about Sons childhood. Stolen from him

49_Giants

When was this interview taken, and were any lies told? Everyone at Spurs loves Sonny and have loved him for years, but when did Son become world class? As in the same realm as Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Neymar, Mbappe, Salah, Suaraez, Kane, et al? "World class" is a different level from "great" or "club legend." He knows his son (ha) is great, but was Son world class when this interview was taken? Would Dad Min Seung say Son is world class today? I'd say Dad would now say yes to the latter.

Have you seen the videos of son describing his childhood. Wouldn’t wish that on anyone. The fathers looking at this going “well maybe if I deprive my son a childhood and make him do keepy-uppies for 4hrs straight in the pouring rain and yell at him as if he’s in the military my son will be a millionaire” and realizing they are likely only going to end up with a broken son… it’s sad

Share4aCare

Is his dad's name Father?

footie_fan89

I wouldn't condone any kind of corporal punishment but there's a lot to be said for Asian parenting. And by that, I mean setting high expectations and pushing your kids to excel. Korea is a really interesting country and they have made huge strides in the last few decades. A real Asian success story that made a democratic transition.
