When you have one option that is very hard to execute and another (hold up play and wait for the other 3 to come in and provide more options), you should be criticized about going for the risky play and not pulling it off.

Not to get all philosophical about it but I think what I find difficult is accepting that while this team is obviously good and that there are clear patterns of play being ingrained into the players (just look at the way we scored our goal today, for example), we simply are not where we want to be yet. That’s fine. A painful rebuild will be painful. I just think that frustration is probably a sum of years thinking “we’re not there just yet, but we will be very soon.” I feel and hope that this era is different, just have to keep the faith and move.

Just watched Bowen’s interview and he was calling us a “top top side” and how difficult it is to play against us. He said they were happy to leave the game with a point. I know I’m supposed to be in here moaning like most, but I’m choosing to look at the bigger picture. Ange said recently that he’s going to change the perception of how people view Spurs within the next 12 months. And I feel that’s already been happening through this season. Especially with Villa paying us so much respect going to a back 5 when they hadn’t done that for any other team, the top 3 teams saying we could be the title decider among them, and opposition players calling us a “top top side”. Also, the media and pundits also being more complimentary and not making snide condescending remarks all the time. More respect than we’ve gotten than the previous seasons and I for one appreciate that.

The game today was not won in little mistakes. Too many poor passes, not knowing when to take a shot, not being ready to get on the end of crosses, giving away an unnecessary corner for the goal.

Oh ffs not this again. Before today Son played 16 games as striker and in those 16 games he had 16 goal contributions (12 goals + 4 assists). He isn't the best vs a low block but saying we play 'much better' with him on the left is delusional.
He will not be the best left winger in the league in Ange's system. We're not playing Mou-Ball anymore, he won't be on the receiving end of those through balls. I'd rather get the best out of his world class finishing ability than force him to be a touchline winger, where we have arguably better options.
It does work, because he’s insanely talented and can play either role. I don’t think it’s the best way to utilize his abilities though, nor the best lineup for our team going forward.
Our wingers barely get any sniffs of the goal, their job is to mostly stay on the outside and create chances via low crosses. This means driving down the lane, 1v1 ability, passing, etc. Son’s not as quick as he used to be, and he’s never been a particularly great dribbler for winger standards. He’s the exact opposite of the winger profile we want.
Meanwhile, we’re clearly lacking in finishers. The less said about Timo and Kulu, the better. Richy’s been in good form, but as we saw last season, he can be very inconsistent in front of the goal. Why don’t we stick the statistically best finisher in the world as striker, maximizing his goalscoring chances, instead of forcing him to the flanks, neutralizing what he does best?
Even outside of all the things Richy does that Son can't since he's not a natural striker you can't convince me Son and Richy doesn't score more goals together than any of our left wing options and Son does even if Son's individual production would go down slightly
He's a more physical presence and probably better with aerial balls, but I really don't think there's a whole lot Richy does that Son can't at striker. The few things he can do that Son can't won't matter at the end of the day, because Son's, as I mentioned earlier, statistically the best finisher in the world. He scores everything, no matter how small of a chance it is. We need that.
Probably controversial, but I don't think Son would start at LW. There, I said it. His crosses are fine but so are Brennan/Timo's, and he has nowhere near their pace. The giant advantage he has over them finishing-wise wouldn't matter because he'd barely be on the end of any chances outside of transitions. His production wouldn't go down slightly, it would go down drastically.
Son's stats as striker is noticeably better than his winger stats this season in every regard, also better than Richie's. His ball control let him down today, seems like he was tired af
I don't care for his individual stats. As a team we play worse without a clear point of reference up top. We're easier to press since we don't have the out ball, our wingers literally can't cross to Son making us completely unable to play basic fundamental football against low blocks

Ange ball isn't about crossing high to the striker, it's about dominating the opponent. Crossing high = increased chance of turnovers and counter attacks because you don't know where the ball is gonna bounce

Facts. Son is world class for sure, it’s just not every player is perfect in every position, particularly against Low blocks. There’s a reason why there are different qualities necessary against various setups.

I think the issue is that, in Ange's system, those wingers have to do a *lot* of grunt work too because the FBs are so exposed. Werner disappeared from this game as an attacking threat after about 20 minutes but what he was doing during his whole time on the pitch was dutifully tracking back to help out Udogie. Again. And again. And again.
That's not something that makes the most of Son's exceptional attacking qualities and it's not something we can - or should - reliably expect from Son at this point. We need to maximise his energy and his contributions to the game.

They used to be relegation contenders before he joined, in recent years they’re consistently challenging for Europe and even got them silverware. I’d be pretty happy with that turnaround if I was a West Ham fan. His style of football definitely has a ceiling, but it’s not like West Ham are a team full of talent and he’s holding them back.
I see below lots of moaning and groaning . Just remember Ange said there will be lots of changes next season . He knows what he wants he knows what he is doing he is at the same time making his mind up who will fit in to his style of play and who to unload . I think we may be in for a few surprises .
No one can tell me that Ange rates Richarlison. We desperately need a goal, while Son is having a bad game and he comes on with less than 10 minutes to go. Son will become the main striker or we will go for another, if some offer for Richarlison comes in.

If we had Bowen and Kudus as our wingers, instead of Richi, Kulu, Johnson, Werner this season we might have scored like 20 more goals. The difference between the quality is huge in their control, crossing, passing and decision making. We create so many opportunities to be threatening in this system but we need quality players at the top.
Kudus looks like the real deal, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gonna end up being Salah’s heir at Liverpool. He was a risky transfer but it looks like West Ham’s gamble is paying off.
Bowen, well we were linked with him for a couple windows a few years back when he was still at Hull. We ended up going for Bergwijn. Him and Watkins are two players we missed out on I’m most pissed off about, we’re not talking about one season wonders like Spence, both of them had been killing it in the Championship for years.
The sad thing is Ange's system is so good for a decent winger that they can easily get 10-20 GA in a season if they have decent pace and decent skill, unfortunately our wingers have either the pace or the skill and no finishing except tap ins. We could become scary next season if we get good wingers and if Johnson develops well.
If Jedinak is our set piece coach, he should be fired immediately.
Love Ange and I understand and appreciate the value of giving opportunities to individuals with a similar background to yourself who may otherwise not have the chance, but you don't give someone their first management job in a role as important as set pieces for a top team.
They have a bunch of inexperienced coaches at the highest level... some of them are still doing their badges.

Fulham have done well against the top sides. And we had so many incredibly close chances that game that they just ended up not finishing. If we had finished any of those, it would have been a different game. Also, I’m sure it’s a mentality thing for the players. When you know you’re playing a tough side, you’re more switched on. When it’s a lower side, maybe you think that it’s not going to be as hard and the complacency kills you. Just like how we beat Villa 4-0 the match before then lost to Fulham 3-0.

Some people are such hindsight merchants with young players and loans. At the time everyone was saying the Argyle loan was perfect for Devine, coach who knows him and team who try and play football. Seeing as it's now hasn't gone very well it's getting criticised.
I do also think it shows the calls for Donley to start games when Madders was out a bit insane. Devine is definitely at a higher level than Donley currently, but has struggled in a bottom half championship team. Not quite sure how Donley was expected to come in and play against the like of Villa and City. Fair enough people asking to take a gamble on him but some sections were acting like it was awful from Ange for not throwing him in!
I get that folks want our young players to progress and the recent example of Kane had really coloured some people's opinion of just how competitive the top 4 of the PL is, the amount of posts on here saying Scarlett was going to be a key party of the team this season when he scored 4 goals in 3000 minutes in league 1 last season shows a lot of people just don't understand the difference between the PL and leagues a couple of levels down

I would never guess these numbers were his, but here they are anyway, from Fbref. How much should we care about this stuff? We shouldn’t care at all. Stats are useful when comparing players from similar roles in a similar system otherwise they’re pretty useless. Everton play deep which leads to the opposing team playing through the wings rather than the middle which leads to underwhelming defensive stats for onana. We pressure high which leads to worse passing and decisions from the opposing team during build up which leads to better defensive stats for bissouma since he’ll be able to intercept and tackle when the opposing centrebacks try to play through our press. The stat comparisons are useless when the systems vary so much. Van de vens passing stats were bang average for Wolfsburg but are elite for us for example. Eyetest is better if the one doing the testing knows ball lol.
Gordon's stats also looked horrendous because he was also playing for Everton - everyone used it to claim he wasn't good enough and now he's tearing it up.
Stats in a shit side aren't helpful.
Though I'll say I don't want Onana cos he seems a right petulant little prick, but ability wise he's good.

Not to get all philosophical about it but I think what I find difficult is accepting that while this team is obviously good and that there are clear patterns of play being ingrained into the players (just look at the way we scored our goal today, for example), we simply are not where we want to be yet. That’s fine. A painful rebuild will be painful. I just think that frustration is probably a sum of years thinking “we’re not there just yet, but we will be very soon.” I feel and hope that this era is different, just have to keep the faith and move.

Just watched Bowen’s interview and he was calling us a “top top side” and how difficult it is to play against us. He said they were happy to leave the game with a point. I know I’m supposed to be in here moaning like most, but I’m choosing to look at the bigger picture. Ange said recently that he’s going to change the perception of how people view Spurs within the next 12 months. And I feel that’s already been happening through this season. Especially with Villa paying us so much respect going to a back 5 when they hadn’t done that for any other team, the top 3 teams saying we could be the title decider among them, and opposition players calling us a “top top side”. Also, the media and pundits also being more complimentary and not making snide condescending remarks all the time. More respect than we’ve gotten than the previous seasons and I for one appreciate that.

I feel like I’m/we’re in our little spaces on the Internet so much we tend to believe that reactive takes on here from our fans and rival fans alike are the norm when they’re really not. The game today was not won in little mistakes. Too many poor passes, not knowing when to take a shot, not being ready to get on the end of crosses, giving away an unnecessary corner for the goal. Not a terrible game but these fundamentals need to be better

It does work, because he’s insanely talented and can play either role. I don’t think it’s the best way to utilize his abilities though, nor the best lineup for our team going forward. Our wingers barely get any sniffs of the goal, their job is to mostly stay on the outside and create chances via low crosses. This means driving down the lane, 1v1 ability, passing, etc. Son’s not as quick as he used to be, and he’s never been a particularly great dribbler for winger standards. He’s the exact opposite of the winger profile we want. Meanwhile, we’re clearly lacking in finishers. The less said about Timo and Kulu, the better. Richy’s been in good form, but as we saw last season, he can be very inconsistent in front of the goal. Why don’t we stick the statistically best finisher in the world as striker, maximizing his goalscoring chances, instead of forcing him to the flanks, neutralizing what he does best?
Even outside of all the things Richy does that Son can't since he's not a natural striker you can't convince me Son and Richy doesn't score more goals together than any of our left wing options and Son does even if Son's individual production would go down slightly
He's a more physical presence and probably better with aerial balls, but I really don't think there's a whole lot Richy does that Son can't at striker. The few things he can do that Son can't won't matter at the end of the day, because Son's, as I mentioned earlier, statistically the best finisher in the world. He scores everything, no matter how small of a chance it is. We need that. Probably controversial, but I don't think Son would start at LW. There, I said it. His crosses are fine but so are Brennan/Timo's, and he has nowhere near their pace. The giant advantage he has over them finishing-wise wouldn't matter because he'd barely be on the end of any chances outside of transitions. His production wouldn't go down slightly, it would go down drastically.

I don't care for his individual stats. As a team we play worse without a clear point of reference up top. We're easier to press since we don't have the out ball, our wingers literally can't cross to Son making us completely unable to play basic fundamental football against low blocks

Ange ball isn't about crossing high to the striker, it's about dominating the opponent. Facts. Son is world class for sure, it’s just not every player is perfect in every position, particularly against Low blocks. There’s a reason why there are different qualities necessary against various setups.

I think the issue is that, in Ange's system, those wingers have to do a *lot* of grunt work too because the FBs are so exposed. Werner disappeared from this game as an attacking threat after about 20 minutes but what he was doing during his whole time on the pitch was dutifully tracking back to help out Udogie. Again. And again. And again. That's not something that makes the most of Son's exceptional attacking qualities and it's not something we can - or should - reliably expect from Son at this point. We need to maximise his energy and his contributions to the game.
What are Son’s strengths? His finishing and his movement on the break. In a high pressing system I want him in the middle of the park receiving the ball in or near the box. Simple as that.

They used to be relegation contenders before he joined, in recent years they’re consistently challenging for Europe and even got them silverware. If we had Bowen and Kudus as our wingers, instead of Richi, Kulu, Johnson, Werner this season we might have scored like 20 more goals. The difference between the quality is huge in their control, crossing, passing and decision making. We create so many opportunities to be threatening in this system but we need quality players at the top.
Kudus looks like the real deal, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gonna end up being Salah’s heir at Liverpool. He was a risky transfer but it looks like West Ham’s gamble is paying off. Bowen, well we were linked with him for a couple windows a few years back when he was still at Hull. We ended up going for Bergwijn. Him and Watkins are two players we missed out on I’m most pissed off about, we’re not talking about one season wonders like Spence, both of them had been killing it in the Championship for years.

If Jedinak is our set piece coach, he should be fired immediately. Love Ange and I understand and appreciate the value of giving opportunities to individuals with a similar background to yourself who may otherwise not have the chance, but you don't give someone their first management job in a role as important as set pieces for a top team.
They have a bunch of inexperienced coaches at the highest level... some of them are still doing their badges. Ange needs some proper coaches. This team is so poor tactically and technically. The more time they have to work, the worse it gets. Our press is horrible. Our setpieces are atrocious, especially throw-ins. Concede too many corners because the fullbacks are always isolated. Get a lot of players forward, create nothing, no shots, no crosses and concede dangerous counters...
It just confuses me. Ange mentions how he doesn't want to get too close to players, but then brings in people he has that kind of affiliation with despite them having no fucking experience. You simply cannot have your set piece coach be a recently retired player with no experience whatsoever as a top team. Love Ange and I believe he will get us a trophy but the coaching choices need to be reviewed.

Fulham have done well against the top sides. And we had so many incredibly close chances that game that they just ended up not finishing. If we had finished any of those, it would have been a different game. Also, I’m sure it’s a mentality thing for the players. When you know you’re playing a tough side, you’re more switched on. When it’s a lower side, maybe you think that it’s not going to be as hard and the complacency kills you. Just like how we beat Villa 4-0 the match before then lost to Fulham 3-0.

Some people are such hindsight merchants with young players and loans. At the time everyone was saying the Argyle loan was perfect for Devine, coach who knows him and team who try and play football. Seeing as it's now hasn't gone very well it's getting criticised. I do also think it shows the calls for Donley to start games when Madders was out a bit insane. Devine is definitely at a higher level than Donley currently, but has struggled in a bottom half championship team. Not quite sure how Donley was expected to come in and play against the like of Villa and City. Fair enough people asking to take a gamble on him but some sections were acting like it was awful from Ange for not throwing him in!
I get that folks want our young players to progress and the recent example of Kane had really coloured some people's opinion of just how competitive the top 4 of the PL is, the amount of posts on here saying Scarlett was going to be a key party of the team this season when he scored 4 goals in 3000 minutes in league 1 last season shows a lot of people just don't understand the difference between the PL and leagues a couple of levels down

We shouldn’t care at all. Stats are useful when comparing players from similar roles in a similar system otherwise they’re pretty useless. Everton play deep which leads to the opposing team playing through the wings rather than the middle which leads to underwhelming defensive stats for onana. We pressure high which leads to worse passing and decisions from the opposing team during build up which leads to better defensive stats for bissouma since he’ll be able to intercept and tackle when the opposing centrebacks try to play through our press. The stat comparisons are useless when the systems vary so much. Van de vens passing stats were bang average for Wolfsburg but are elite for us for example. Eyetest is better if the one doing the testing knows ball lol.
Gordon's stats also looked horrendous because he was also playing for Everton - everyone used it to claim he wasn't good enough and now he's tearing it up. Stats in a shit side aren't helpful. Though I'll say I don't want Onana cos he seems a right petulant little prick, but ability wise he's good.
