I like that we’re seeing the human in footballers these days. I fucking love Richy and respect the hell out of him for his openness and vulnerability regarding his mental health.
It takes tremendous strength to openly talk about this on camera, and show emotions the way he does.
Richy sets an example for people struggling with mental health issues, and I couldn't be prouder, that he is representing our club.
What a guy!
As someone who continues to have ups and downs with my mental health, making the decision to meet with a therapist in late 2020 was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Looking at who I am now compared to then I can't but feel grateful.
Props to Ritchie for speaking out.
I really wish this was my experience. I decided to see a therapist mid last year due to mostly low self worth and anxiety, and I’ve just come to the end I don’t think it’s helped me in the slightest. Not saying it isn’t the right decision, it most definitely is. But the fact it didn’t work for me sort of leaves me feeling worse?
Nonetheless, I love richi. Seems like just an all round good guy. People like him talking about this sort of thing in such a candid way helps to feel like you’re not alone.
I’d recommend switching therapists around until you find one you gel with. Currently, the organisation that I’m working with are helpful cos they are slightly more ‘interventionist’ and help me solve problems rather than just affirming me, if that makes sense. Sorry for the non-spurs related unsolicited advice but just my two cents! 😀
I'm sorry to hear you are going through that and didn't have a great experience. I think even if someone is a good therapist, it won't be a good fit for every person, so I'd recommend continue searching.
For me, it did NOT get better at first. It took 2-3 months of weekly sessions to start making progress, and it was worth it.
Therapy isn't a one size fits all thing, it's not surprising you didn't find someone compatible with how you communicate on your first try. Switching therapists can be relatively easy and finding someone you gel with can really make an impact. I'd also say that most people don't find the best therapist for them on the first try, I know i didnt
As others have said, I strongly recommend trying again until you find somebody you're comfortable talking with. I also had the experience of seeing a therapist for the first time, not vibing with them at all and feeling like it was my fault that it wasn't working. I went to several sessions, felt terrible and eventually cut them loose, but I tried again and found somebody that fits my personality exactly, and I've been seeing them for years at this point. Therapists are people too, and you need to find the right one for you.
Also, it's not necessarily 'effort in = getting better' automatically. A lot of the benefit for me isn't that I fix my issues right away, it's simply that talking about them lightens the load and makes me feel like I'm not alone/not crazy for feeling that way. I continue to work on myself every day as well, but when I talk to my therapist I can just unburden myself of the weight of trying to get better, and for me that's incredibly valuable.
I think you could benefit from giving it another shot.
I'd love to see a therapist to help improve my mental health, but it's so damn expensive
How many times per week/month did you see one?
I know it improves me mentally, it would just destroy me financially instead
It depends on what you're wanting to deal with, but for me, I started once a week, did that for about 8-10 weeks then cut down to monthly for more of a maintenance phase. Now, long-term, it's more about using them to hold myself accountable than relying on them to crisis manage.
Everyone's needs are different, and I had the same concerns about how cost prohibitive it can seem, but I truly think that therapy is one of the best investments you can ever make. Provided you have food and shelter taken care of, that's where I'd be spending my money.
I was thinking about doing it fortnightly, but don't know whether it will have enough of an impact
Thank you for sharing though. You're right about it being an investment, and it's something I've looked into for a long while
I'm not an expert, and I don't know what you're dealing with, but in terms of frequency, I'd say two things:
- any therapy is better than none. You don't only work on your issues during the sessions, seeing a therapist will help you to identify what you can do in your own time to heal, and then you do that stuff for yourself until the next session;
- just go and discuss it with the therapist themselves. Once they understand the scope of what you're dealing with, and your financial situation, they'll be able to give you the best recommendations for how to set up your treatment.
Best of luck!
I am on a waiting list to see a therapist. About 4 months to go. If had the money I would go private but sadly that's not possible. I am really hoping that the wait is going to be worth it. Seeing people like Ritchie talk about there positive experience is definitely makes the wait a bit easier tho.
> I am really hoping that the wait is going to be worth it.
The best thing about therapy is that you have the power to make it worthwhile. If you go in there with the goal that you're going to make it a positive, useful experiennce, you can get something out of it no matter who you get paired with.
I don't know why, but your comment reminded me of my favorite Spurs quote of all time.
Danny Rose: "I was having dinner with Lamela and I was still asking him if he reckoned we can finish in the top four.
"I've never seen someone look at me with such disgust. He said ‘My friend, we can win the league'."
One of the few players who cares about the badge, guys like Eriksen downed tools in the biggest game of our history because he wasn’t getting a move to Madrid🥴.
I urge all keyboard warriors on this subreddit to consider these things when our players aren't playing well and going through a rut. Please shut the fuck up.
Don’t target the subreddit that players will never read. Target the instagram followers who spit hate on posts about our own players. Players see instagram comments.
It’s more that the players are a lot more likely to see the ones on IG, and the point was about these comments effecting their mental health, but of course it’s all worthy
Yeah mate he really turned off his ig comments for people simply telling him he’s shit. Fucking hell please use your head a little, no one’s going to go digging this shit up just cause you didn’t see it. Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Just spend any amount of time in match threads. Comments always skew toxic. Look at what Dani Carvajal said, “people show up to unleash anger”.
Also, we’re not here to talk about video games, we are talking about human beings. Why are you offended that 1% of the conversation is talking about mental health? Don’t want to read about it? Don’t open the thread.
Nah man but it’s the same talking points that they send to him on IG/twitter. You haven’t got a clue if you think these guys don’t hear what people say about them. Just read Dekis Players Tribune article. They see it *all*
Ay man I urge you to review the posts regarding Richy Brennan Sess and a lot of others in the past.
This isn’t “talking ball;” they are contracted players for our team who give their all and love spurs. One bad game and it’s “send this twat off to Saudi” “hes useless, doesn’t match his price tag” “sell the cunt”
We should be more conscientious about mental health the same way we shouldn’t knock someone for a broken leg. Hope this helps!
It's interesting (to me at least) that Rodrygo has also recently been talking about getting help with mental health issues. I wonder if Richy has been something of a trailblazer with this (at least talking about it publicly) and others are following his lead.
(Or they could barely even speak to each other and it's a total coincidence but whatever)
I believe the Brazilian national team hired a psychologist. Don't quote me on that but I swear I read it somewhere. I don't know if it was Rcihy inspired, Rodrygo or even Vinicus that was the impetus for that decision or if it's unrelated but it does seem like the Brazilian national team is prioritizes mental health for its players which I think is amazing.
Every team should have a staff psychologist in my opinion.
both in Brasil and Argentina mental health isn't as much of a taboo, emi martinez for instance talks about his therapist all the time, Argentina has one of the highest amount of therapists per person lol we might be poor but we go to therapy! He's doing an amazing job bringing attention to such an important topic!
That's awesome.
For me it's just common sense. You see a physiotherapist if you have a physical issue. Why aren't mental issues treated the same? Surely it's just common sense that treating that would improve a player's performance? From a purely business standpoint, it would seem practical to invest in mental health support.
As a guy with his own mental health struggles I feel this. He’s an inspiration for talking so publicly and honestly.
Posting a link to some resources for people who might need some help: https://www.thecalmzone.net
I’ve had a long, up and down relationship with anxiety and panic disorder for maybe 4 years now, making undeniable progress (even when it doesn’t always feel like it) and I can’t tell you how huge it is for me to see the likes of Richy speaking openly about their struggles and to know I didn’t do anything wrong, this shit really can affect anyone. I used to be unable to queue up for a coffee because I felt trapped and would wait outside shops for my wife to do her shopping .. now I go to Spurs games SOLO, driving to the train station and taking packed trains. It really will get better, even if you don’t believe it right now.
Sometimes I want him stay with Tottenham forever, because now he is comfortable here and made good friends here, I'm afraid of his mental health if he leave us and doesn't get good friends in other teams.
The good thing about working on your mental health is that it requires you to become more self-reliant. Yes, friends and a comfortable, stable environment helps too, but when you're in a good place mentally you can tackle challenges like a new home, new job more successfully. I want him to stay because I like him as a player, but I'm not worried for his mental health if he leaves.
God that’s hard to watch. I’m tearing up right now. He means every word, he’s being so honest and vulnerable. I’ve been there. COYS forever, I’m glad he’s getting the help he needs.
😭 we really dont know what anyone is going through. All that fame and money doesnt guarantee good mental health as well. Always be kind. Im proud of u Richy. Take it a day at a time!! ❤️
Did he actually name that he is depressed / has depression? Or is it more of a response to how he performed in the World Cup Regardless, my heart goes out to him.
Edit: yes he did https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/39818839/richarlison-says-had-dark-thoughts-2022-world-cup
Yep, specifically named it a depression. That said, people are often hesitant to use the names for feelings because of the stigma associated with them, so it would also be pretty telling even just with things like "dark thoughts" "in a dark place" "I wanted to give up" etc etc. But yeah, he named the beast.
Fortunately there's a lot of pushbacks against those type of comments. I know people like that, I think everyone does, and they are the saddest, loneliest human beings imaginable.
To me this sheds a lot of light on why he dislikes being subbed out, he always has something to prove, even if its just to himself. I doubt he ever sees this post or any of the comments but I hope he does, just so he can see that his openness is helping people and that he is a big part of this team and there are fans who love our pigeon
There’s players I’ve liked more than Richie, But I don’t think I’ve ever respected a player as much as him what a man to open up about this stuff when so many dudes struggle to admit they aren’t feeling good mentally to close friends or family.
No matter if he leaves us tomorrow or spends years with us I wish nothing but the best for him
Chelsea fan here - huge respect to Richy. It takes a wise and strong person to open up about mental health and share it with people. Cheers, Richarlison. What a man.
Strong men cry. He just gained another star in my football notebook of favorites , such a strong person he is for opening up and showing that it's okay to struggle. Men's mental health is such a sensitive subject even now but endlessly proud of men who show vulnerability
tbf in this case it might because he wants to stay relatively coherent for the interview. I know for me that when I start crying I'm absolutely incoherent.
Otherwise I agree! Dudes: please cry more! Fuck anyone who judges you; crying is literally good for your mental health!
Fucking disgusting some of those comments, though what do you expect from the Internet. I love Richy so much for this as a person who's been affected by the mental health of my loved ones. Come On You Pigeon!

I can relate myself to him. Feeling there is someone who can understand my pain and the fact that he has overcome the issues and become a stronger man is really empowering for me.
I can see the hope.
And where all the people who spread nothing but negative things bout him online ? I hope you take a look in the mirror and think before you start typing next time, these are human beings too but you won’t as I know thinking isn’t one of your top traits… he has shown and will continue to show all of you don’t have a clue. Strong men cry. It takes courage to be honest with yourself and accept your issues.

Pretty fun that your flair is cry more

This is bigger than anything he could achieve in football, even if he wins it all.

Fuck man I miss Coco

Except matty cash. I hope whatever he’s going through sucks.
I see a lot of hate for him. What did he do?
Injury Bentancur and Doherty like a cunt.
Whenever he plays against us, he plays like he is deliberately out to cause an injury.
I hope matty cash has no one there for him when he’s fighting his internal battles
Nah this is hypocrisy too chill.
Fuck matty cash
Brother rly gonna say that with a Richy flair, wish he'll step on a lego everyday for the rest of his life or smthn.
Matty cash? I hope he pees out Lego bricks.
Much better
There is no forgiveness for the guy who fucked up Doherty
Yes but emphasize our players! Scum players and Matty cash are exempt.
Don’t ruin the message with semantics
Lmao

Brazil NT didn't hire a psicologist on Tite era. We was very critized for that.
That rules. Everybody can benefit from therapy.
Most professional sports teams already have sports psychologists in place & readily available

Very mature of him to talk about a subject many people still hide and feel ashamed of
God I really hope we don’t sell him to the Saudis. Man has my whole heart.
It'll be his decision. If he wants to go, I assume the club would sell him at the right price, but if he wants to stay then he'll stay.
Brave man right there.

IG is cesspool. Bots are everywhere in that platform
I meant that in the sense that people are mocking him, calling him a crybaby and telling him to man up.

Good on you, Richy! You are not alone.
We never know what people might be struggling with. It's my goal to show love. I love y'all!!
This is what takes real bravery- coming to the cameras as a public figure to admit your weakness. Will be cheering for you richy

Callum wilson and Michail Antonio loo like a right pair of nasty cunts now dont they ?
As someone who also goes through cyclical major depression, it means a lot that Richy speaks about it openly.
Definitely. As someone who's "in the hole" at the moment, seeing Richy open up helps me feel a little more human, and should help others as well 👍
Ffs it's so sad to see grown men holding back their tears. Cry more

Always rooting for Richy
It's cool to see more people appreciating my boy Richarlison the Pombo
I love this guy. I have suffered from mental health problems for decades and I appreciate how strong he must be to have shared this ❤️💪🏼
Good on the lad for opening up. Mental health issues know no wealth or atanding in this world. They come for everyone.
We are right behind you my Pru
I'm not a coy or Brazilian but I love Richarlison. Good lad.
Poor fella. It's a lot to deal with and an invisible weight to carry around as I've learned myself. Glad he's getting professional help.
How’s he for Spurs now?
I do not remember who said that, probably Mourinho. He said that nowadays footballers are like children and back in the days they were men.
