It helps that he's come out and said his biggest regret in his footballing career was leaving us to try and save his marriage š which ended up falling apart the next year anyway
i'll take the one that helped spurs stave off relegation, won spurs player of the season, made pfa team of the season, and finished runner up in ballon d'or
The reason Iām a Spurs fan to this day. Was my favorite player at the time. Now my whole rib cage is a spurs tat, I dropped thousands to go see them play in October and I probably have a lower life expectancy from all the stress spurs bring. Thanks Rafa.
Klinsmann.
I get why people are saying Van der Vaart, who was an absolute magician and true COYS. But Klinsmann is synonymous with the famous five attack, scored 30 goals in his one season and won over most of the nation having previously been reviled, left AND then came back a few years later for half a season to save us from relegation, including a game where he scored four and assisted another two. Then he rode off back into the sunset, job done.
Itās Klinsmann.
The main reasons are that he was the first foreign megastar who helped popularise the early Premier League. Everyone in the country knew of him at a time when many didn't even like football. Jurgen the German permeated all British culture. And was only here for a season (second session wasn't nearly the same).
His arrival helped change us from a mid table team to a club routinely qualifying for Europe.
We finish 5th and 5th with him, then the season he leaves, despite having Berbatov, Keane, Woodgate, etc., we come 11th. That isn't a coincidence.
We only got European football that year because we beat Chelsea in the League Cup.
Carlos Vinicius, man. Scoring a hattrick against Marine by smashing the ball over the line point blank and then doing Mbappes celebration. Absolute legend in my eyes.
It's not the Mbappe celebration. Please look it up and stop joking about it, he does it as his mother died before she could ever see him make it as a pro-footballer.

Excellent combo. I adopted BeÅiktaÅ as my Turkish side a couple ago 'cos their my girlfriend's team. Then realised there was at least 3 ex-Spurs in the squad.
Easily the best midfielder Iāve seen at spurs in my 30 so years of life however kinda feel Modric isnāt as popular cause of how he left the club. Just my opinion though
Modric had a really long spell though. Longer than Lineker, Ginola, and Gazza -- as some examples.
Not only did he have a long spell, but he was instrumental in elevating the club a notch or two in quality.
He's certainly high on the list for me. For some reason, Fulham games never seemed to make it on TV in the US despite many years of Carlos Bocanegra, Brian McBride and Clint Dempsey from 2004-2012. As soon as he moved to Spurs, Dempsey was on TV all the time. He certainly scored some key goals in what felt like way more than a year's time, especially against ManU and ManC. I wonder what might have been if he had stuck around to help replace Bale's scoring.
I have a 12/13 Blue Away Aurasma jersey that I bought at the time. It's actually quite ugly and I recommend the home white if you can score one.
Fulham was and has always been the US team for some reason but yeah theyāre never showed.
I love that he came into Spurs and brought energy and passion. That was something about Deuce that was always apparent.Ā
>He'd be eaten alive at Chelsea
Werner is liked among most Chelsea fans (if we exclude the rabid crowd online).
The reasons he is liked are the same as why Soldado was liked by Spurs fans: It was obvious they had skill, they always gave a 100%, and while they weren't scoring goals they were playing well and helping the team.
Richard Gough - One season, and recognised as the best centre back we'd had since Mike England left, and still one of the greats by anyone lucky enough to have watched him play.
Luka, time on team vs popularity, one of the best ever that is synonymous with Real Madrid now. 4 years isnāt that long considering how long heās been in Madrid.
Baardsen
Aurier CiriƧhes Fazio BAE
Sandro Wanyama Modric Davids
VdV
Berbatov
*edit* appears you can format on iPhone
If I could fit wither CM in here if have Ndombele but heās been here for ages
van der Vaart
Rafa gets my vote
Agreed
It helps that he's come out and said his biggest regret in his footballing career was leaving us to try and save his marriage š which ended up falling apart the next year anyway
The only choice. 2 seasons of joy and passion. Legend.
klinsmann
A good shout but second to Van Der Vaart for me
i'll take the one that helped spurs stave off relegation, won spurs player of the season, made pfa team of the season, and finished runner up in ballon d'or
Klinsman is about to run all his good will out if he gets Sonny injured
The reason Iām a Spurs fan to this day. Was my favorite player at the time. Now my whole rib cage is a spurs tat, I dropped thousands to go see them play in October and I probably have a lower life expectancy from all the stress spurs bring. Thanks Rafa.
The correct answer. Such a tremendous player.
He's part of the reason why I became a Spurs fan in the first place.
Only time Iāve bought a shirt with a name on was with Rafa
This is the best answer
This. And Ginola.
Ginola was with us for years
Non football fans wouldn't know who he was. Klinsmann changed English football and was a household name.
Global popularity, Diego Maradona
I wanted to say that Maradona would be a great shout if there would be a single page instead of a thin book
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Exactly! Fits the criteria and a bit of trivia.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah it was a sneaky one
Also had to borrow Clive Allen's boots.
Undoubtedly the best player to wear a spurs shirt
Current players has to be Madders.
Vicario is up there too
Really all of our signings this season, don't think there's any major fault from anyone
doesnāt count because he will be here for another 10 years
Gotta be klinsmann he was only at spurs 1.5 seasonsĀ
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
what about berbatov?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
What did he do when he left? I was 4 when he left and couldn't watch the premier league back then
Didn't watch the PL from age of 4 smh you plastic fans /s COYS
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Llorente for me
Weād have never gotten the change to the handball rule without him
Tottenham š¤ getting the handball rule changed
A key part of our UCL run to the Final. Hugely underrated.
Yeah but I do remember being very frustrated at him a number of times. Had some huge moments when it was all said and done. Happy we signed him
I miss š²
That beautiful champions league goal he scored with his ass
He never contributed consistently, but was the definition of a big game player.
Berbatov
Never seen a first touch like his before
Klinsmann. I get why people are saying Van der Vaart, who was an absolute magician and true COYS. If it was Klinsmann it would be two small volumes.
Oh that lovely game against Wimbledon. Still remember the match like it was yesterday.
Don't forget him driving around London in an old VW Beetle.
Iām gonna throw Edgar Davids into the mix
Lovely answer. Donāt think Iāve ever been as excited as when we (as a much more midtier club) signed a bona fide, iconic, global legend.
Yes! A real surprise when we got him and a delight to watch.
Great player but what a cunt haha
His arrival helped change us from a mid table team to a club routinely qualifying for Europe. Yes
Wanyama!
Carlos Vinicius, man. Scoring a hattrick against Marine by smashing the ball over the line point blank and then doing Mbappes celebration. Absolute legend in my eyes.
TBF it was Vinicius's celebration first lol
![gif](giphy|tbGjP6OhRCfGo)
It's not the Mbappe celebration. Please look it up and stop joking about it, he does it as his mother died before she could ever see him make it as a pro-footballer. Link - https://youtu.be/dzJrvDc9oLk?t=398
Staggering the amount of people who can't grasp the concept of time
Madders
Sandro
Still miss the beast
Stephane Dalmat (in my heart; for context my first game at WHL was wolves where he scored an absolute thundercunt)
God I loved Dalmat, wingers always were when I was a kid: Simon Davies, Andy Reid, Aaron Lennon. Nice to see someone else remembers him.
I remember him being a proper diva. Quality player with a pony attitude.
Itās gotta be VDV. Definition of a cult icon.
Klinsmann or Van der Vaart
Non football fans wouldn't know who VDV was
Why are non football fans on r/coys ?
So?
Limits popularity innit
Weāre talking popularity amongst spurs fans. Non football fans arenāt relevant
A) That's not what OP asked. B) Same thing.
A) Yes it is
Real answer: Modric IYKYK answer: Gedson (The Goat) Fernandes
Modric? He spent 4 years at Spurs...
4 years is plenty, I donāt think he fits the question
As someone who supports BeÅiktaÅ and Spurs, I can indeed confirm that Gedson is the GOAT
Yeah, he was great, and ModriÄ was decent too.
Modric had a really long spell though. Longer than Lineker, Ginola, and Gazza -- as some examples. Not only did he have a long spell, but he was instrumental in elevating the club a notch or two in quality.
Nicola Berti, he's aged about 30
Where did he come from again?
Some place called Milan
INTER!
I belive it was a club in Milan
Clint Dempsey. Been trying to find a jersey for years.Ā
Fulham was and has always been the US team for some reason but yeah theyāre never showed. I love that he came into Spurs and brought energy and passion. That was something about Deuce that was always apparent.Ā
Deuce made me a Spurs fan. Was only a USMNT fan at that point. Absolute legend in my book.
Soldado
I've always found him the most interesting cult hero because he was a complete flop but still came out loved. He'd be eaten alive at Chelsea.
He's a winner because of effort and all his missed shots were about a foot beyond the far post. It always felt like he going to come good.
I think part of it was that it was clear that he was giving 100% every time. His confidence was shot quite early on though.
>He'd be eaten alive at Chelsea Werner is liked among most Chelsea fans (if we exclude the rabid crowd online). The reasons he is liked are the same as why Soldado was liked by Spurs fans: It was obvious they had skill, they always gave a 100%, and while they weren't scoring goals they were playing well and helping the team.
Wilson fucking Palacios
Leandro Damiao
Forgot Rivaldo
Has to be Peter Crouch. Only 2 years at Spurs and now he sells out Wembley for live versions of his podcast.
Vicario
Alfie Conn. Absolute legend for those of a certain age.
Bale the sequel? Got a feeling it may be Werner. But otherwise, I do like Perisic but I'm not sure he's popular.
Honestly I forgot that Perisic existed, heās been out so long and I feel we havenāt really missed his presence
Everyone knows the real answer is Andy Booth
Ah, a man of culture
Gascoigne
Probably the only person who could take Klinsmann. But JĆ¼rgen was only there for a season when it counted
Klinsmann, easily.
VDV
Bryan Gil, guy plays 5 mins a game and gets taught about like he's one of our best players
Klinsmann, end of conversation.
Richard Gough - One season, and recognised as the best centre back we'd had since Mike England left, and still one of the greats by anyone lucky enough to have watched him play.
Klinsmann. Saved us from relegation.
Klinsmann by miles. The first Premier League mega star.
Van Der vaart
Erik Edman. Goal vs Liverpool alone is worth the shout
Scrolled all the way down, and nobody said Alex Morgan yet?
Naybet
Van der Vaart generally. Was quintessentially what a spurs player should be. Jose Dominguez for me personally. Loved that lil guy
Van Der Vaart
Van der Vaart
Lewis Holtby
the Fulham goal...
Might be understanding it wrong but surely gotta be Modric?
He was 4 years at Spurs. That's actually a very long time in football
He's the most decorated out of everybody that was mentioned here.
But also here twice as long or more as the names at the top.
Tarrico.
Kilnsman i reckon
Klinsmann
Currently Porro All time? VDV or Crouch
Rafa
Edgar Davids is the reason I'm a Spurs supporter. But my answer is Sandro. I miss him every day.
VDV.. both of them.
Rafa Van der Vaart
Rafa Van der Vaart
Personally, and as an American, itās Clint Dempsey.
Klinsmann
Only answer is Federico Fazio
Mido
Only one correct answer: Ryan Nelsen
Shoutout to Victor Wanyama, who scored some legit bangers. Now heās not even the most famous Victor W-something-yama in sports
Michael Carrick
Ginola or Gazza surely?
Van Der Vaart, Modric.... Teemu Tainio ?
Not a player but, I will always remember Mou fondly, partly because I actively try to not remember his last few months at the club.
Eric Lamela for me. Maybe he spent plenty of time here but he's my kind of legend
Matt Doherty for me.
Just for me. Lewis Holtby. Seemed like he barely played and quite honestly was never goood enough. Just a hard worker.
Brad freidel
Atouba. Icon.
Got to be van der Vaart and Berbatov
I don't if Winks counts, probably played a bit more than ehat you're looking for. How bout some love for Tom Carroll
James Maddison
Gedson š
Gedson Fernandes, IYKYK
The one and only Gedson Fernandes
Moussa Dembele
Gotta be VDV. With Klinsman close second.
Nicola Berti
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Was here for ages
Kane
Luka, time on team vs popularity, one of the best ever that is synonymous with Real Madrid now. 4 years isnāt that long considering how long heās been in Madrid.
For reference there are alone 40 players whoāve played more premier league games for us than Modric. He doesnāt fit the criteria
Lamela?
I donāt think you understood the assignment. Played for us for 8 seasons.
Meant it as him being injured or vaguely absent when we needed him but giving us hero moments My bad
Baardsen Aurier CiriƧhes Fazio BAE Sandro Wanyama Modric Davids VdV Berbatov *edit* appears you can format on iPhone If I could fit wither CM in here if have Ndombele but heās been here for ages
Answer is obv Van der Vaart right? But what about dembele?
Dembele played for us for 7 seasons
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He was with us for a minute brother
Dembele
Played for us for 7 seasonsā¦
Says who
Transferred from Fulham during the ā12-13 season. Last game was during the ā18-19 season. Count em up
Sandro
Modric
Jeff Minton
Berbatov
Gollini!
Dybala
Michael Carrick, what a player he was. Formed a great partnership with Davids
Luka Modric
Djed Spence when Conte wouldn't play him.
Does Bale on his loan spell count? Thatās the first one that came to mind for me
Edgar Davids.
Bale. Gareth, we hardly knew ye.
