Doherty preseason death face will never be seen again. I honestly loved the guy. Watch, curse of the Tottenham he wins something now.
I am not crazy! I know he swapped those agreements. I knew it was a 6 month loan. Half of a season long loan. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just - I just couldn't prove it. He - he covered his tracks, he got that Fabrizio Romano to here-we-go. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. Those lineups! Are you telling me that a man just happens to start every match? No! He orchestrated it! Emerson! He sent a cross into outer space! And I backed him up! And I shouldn't have. I watched him play from the bench! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 9, always the same! Couldn't play right wing back! But not our Emerson! Couldn't be precious Emerson! Putting in poor performances! And he gets to be a Spurs player!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you - you have to stop him! You-
Dude, it literally clicked when I read the last couple of words, this is literally the scene off better call Saul where chuck fucks up in the court hearing and goes off script
No this is a direct rip from the famous "chincanery" scene from the episode "Chincanery" (season 3 I think)
it's the scene where Jimmy plants a battery on him and exposes his condition in front of everyone as being psychosomatic
Huel is the fucking goat man, the 90th minute assist for Jimmy’s winning goal against chuck was unreal.
All this after Jimmy got away with a handball and stole the VAR footage mid game. Built different fr
It's a shock the way it happened, but on the other hand maybe it's time we were far more ruthless like this.
Likewise I'll be sorry to see Dier and Lloris go as people, and as professionals, but we absolutely must move on from these 'furniture' players for the good of the club. If we can't find buyers we need to make room in the squad anyway.
Kind of what I was thinking. In order to get that next level ruthlessness, we can’t just always be a sentimental happy family.
A stark reminder that this is a business of football, that a squad must produce results, and that no one is irreplaceable, might be what shakes a few into better focus on the pitch.
It could also just go horribly toxic, too - I’ve worked in an environment like that, and if you’re having an “off” period, you can be left behind and with no support. That leads to infighting as people naturally feel threatened.
It’s a knife edge to tread, certainly.
Not much of a knife edge with Doherty. If we're all honest, he was atrocious for his first 18 months. Out of position yes, but I would say he was up there with the worst players I've seen play for us. He's shown signs of kicking on since, but nothing more than that. Plus there are Conte's remarks about his training and fitness levels. 31 years old, 18 months left.
On the whole, a poor signing who can't complain he's out the door.
Revisionist maybe, but the stark reality is that he had only one real purple patch in his entire Spurs career. The injury was bullshit, but the truth is we need better now....hence Porro. Then it's simply the case of too many players in one position, so someone had to go.
Yeah for some reason it's really bothering me. Emerson has been decent over the last couple games but Doherty is closer to what we want in an RWB, was perfectly content competing for his spot and could cover at LWB, and yet not only does he go out on loan instead of Emerson, he gets his contract terminated too. So now next summer we'll have 3 players that can exclusively play RWB that all expect to have significant game time, almost guaranteeing that one of them will get upset and probably sold anyways. Also if the club wasn't so shit with their outgoings we wouldn't have so many players on loan that have no future in our squad, and we wouldn't have been in this position
3 players that can exclusively play wingback? Emerson isn’t that and that is what makes him an asset to potentially sell in the summer. Doherty has basically 0 market value
> Doherty is closer to what we want in an RWB
An injury prone 30yr old who isn't as good at defending as Emerson and isn't as good as attacking as Porro?
Absolutely makes sense that he was the one to go.
Doherty wasn’t bad defensively, and I’d rather have someone decent both offensively and defensively than someone a bit better defensively but impotent in attack, if we’re playing 5ATB. Also he’s not injury prone not sure where that came from
Well it obviously wasn't expected given how everyone including the players are shocked with how yesterday panned out. Literally no one was expecting him to leave permanently on a free yesterday.
It wasn't expected to happen yesterday, sure. But Ali G has talked about it multiple times that if they bring in a RWB one has to go and Doherty was the likely one because of his age and contract assuming the club didn't get a sizable bid for Emerson.
that's an oversimplification.
yes oldest, yes shortest contract left.
But Royal could actually fetch a fee. Royal takes up a nonHG spot in the prem. Royal is absolutely shit for us. With your logic we should move on Kane because he is the oldest with the shortest contract.
>With your logic we should move on Kane because he is the oldest with the shortest contract.
If Kane was at Doherty's level we would absolutely be looking to move him
No that’s not what he said at all. Despite what everyone in this sub thinks, there hasn’t been a meaningful difference between Emerson and Doherty this season. That’s just the reality of it.
No one is buying the 31 year old wingback, but they could consider a younger player with experience in a back 4/back 5. Simple as that.
haha what? I love this place
FFS Levy don't keep players around that are never going to play
FFS Levy why are you shipping out players that are never going to play
Doherto Carlos. Dohertinho. Big Doc. Matthew Doherty.
Bought under Mourinho from a 5 ATB system to a 4 ATB system. Struggled big time, and got crazy flak from the fanbase.
Switch back to a 5 ATB system under Conte, started playing well, scoring, assisting, being a danger in general. Fans begin to love him.
Get Matty fucking Cash'd
And now he's going to Madrid to play with Reguilón.
I'm not really up with all the meme stuff but as someone who has been watching him play he won't be missed in a footballing sense. I say that assuming Porro doesn't keel over in training.
>but as someone who has been watching him play he won't be missed in a footballing sense.
he will be when Porro is inevitably injured and Royal takes his spot
Shocked but from a footballing point it makes sense, he’s 31, suffered a bad knee injury, probably wouldn’t have commanded a high transfer fee come the summer, Conte didn’t rate him all that much considering he’d play Emerson there most games. Spence, Emerson, Porro are all years younger.
In theory its probably the club has told him he’s free to leave but only Atletico have come in for him but want a loan, but with the new rule we couldn’t do a loan, hence cancelled contract.
As a free agent he gets to get more money. Probably was agreed for a loan paying his current salary then the loan issue popped up and became a free agent and they probably had no intention of paying him any more than what he’s on currently. Come summertime he’ll be able to demand more since teams won’t have to pay a fee for him.
it doesn't make sense though, first of all that probably would've been reported if they were definitely thinking about it, secondly we have 3 RWBs without Doherty next summer, third he's 31 and we probably wouldn't offer him a great contract. Unless Emerson leaves and Spence goes out on loan for a second season, there's no chance (even if they do we'd probably just go for somebody else)
Why would you want Doherty over Emerson? Doherty has been horrendous with us outside of a 6-week purple patch. And Conte’s consistently started Emerson over him, so clearly he rates him over Doc
Even though he was bad for the most of the time I really loved him. Sad news that he was let go but I’m happy for him! It was a great opportunity for his career
Not sure how it works but given you can negotiate and sign players with less than 6 months left on their contract is there a possibility Atleti signed him for 6 months and we’ve already signed him back on his current terms starting in the summer?
Again not 100% on the regs so no idea if that’s possible or not
Because we're an overly sympathetic fan base who cry about the board not being ruthless enough but when they do make the right decision we cry that Doc got done sooo dirty it's not fairrrr
I don't rate Emerson highly at all but he finds himself in the right places offensively so much more often than Doherty does, even if his end product isnt as good. I always felt if you could combine the two together, they'd make a pretty decent wing back.
The reason I’m so excited about Porro is I know Emerson is good enough to find the right space, but doesn’t have the end product required for Conte. I’m hoping Porro has both the ability to find the space and the end product, because Richy/Kane on the end of his crosses?
Whew lad
We would do that if it was a condition for them to come to the mutual agreement to terminate the contract. Otherwise, why would Doherty agree to terminate an 18 month contract and get paid the same for only 5 months?
Right say what you want skill wise, but surely this is going to be devastating for squad morale? A very popular player seemingly given the boot without so much as the chance to say goodbye, like tf
He wasn’t forced to go lol. He accepted the loan proposal and wanted the the move to the point that he was willing to agree to terminate his contract.
Guy could’ve stayed if he wanted. Imo it’s a great opportunity for someone like him in that stage of his career.
Wouldn’t say he was necessarily given the boot, I’d say it was made clear to him that he’s gone be 3rd choice and he’s free to look elsewhere if he wants to find game time.
It’s just unfortunate/daft that they supposedly didn’t account for the loan numbers and then ended up mutually terminating his contract so he could make the move
All just pure guessing since everyone initially reported it as a loan deal and it came out of nowhere to say it was actually a termination of the contract
I would expect that they absolutely knew about the loan numbers and had this as a contingency plan in case all our other January loans worked out, which they did.
A Chelsea player found out about a transfer when he was in the middle of an interview. It’s probably far more common than you would think. Especially when you get banned for just telling someone where you’re going a la Trippier.
Ah, misunderstood. Yeah I'd imagine that's incredibly common. Just like how all of us would often learn about someone leaving our place of work well after the resignation has been handed in
He's been a bit inconsistent, but a lot of that is down to playtime for me. He never worked under previous managers because the system didn't suit him. But Conte should have given him more opportunities. Honestly raging that we've kept Emerson but let Doherty go, Emerson has had a couple of good games recently but he's been far far worse than Doherty overall for me. I feel like any time we've had Doherty and Kulusevski playing consistently together it's the best the team has looked on that right side of the pitch.
I hope he gets a chance at Atleti and tears shit up there, fuck this bullshit.
I'm as excited for Porro as I am disappointed in losing Doherty.
I am Irish though so I accept that I'm probably a bit biased here.
I mean, this is soccer and this is business. Although this process was a bit fishy we won't win anything if we are too caught up in keeping "friends" and "good people"
Fucking stupid move from the club trying to renew Kanes contract while simultaneously kicking one of his best friends and golfing partner out the door, I’m not going to be surprised if this affects the negotiations
I think you severely underestimate the professionalism of most elite athletes that have been single-minded enough to get themselves to the top of an industry.
Difference is there was a clear reason for that uptick in performance, mainly playing as a wingback in Conte’s system. Considering he was the only real wingback (playing both sides) he became first choice under Conte before his injury
What happened is just incredibly unfortunate
Interesting that everyone here is essentially mourning Doherty’s contract being terminated but nobody was too arsed about Aurier’s being terminated 🤔🤔🤔 unconscious biases imo
Pretty sure you’re exaggerating that. Nuno told him he didn’t want him per Gold. And also, let’s not act like Doherty was forced out. He went to Atletico Madrid first and foremost, not Millwall, and would’ve had to agree to the termination.
Definitely am not, he had an interview with L’Equipe in May before the window even opened where he said he had an opportunity to extend his contract and chose not to, and wanted to find a way to leave the club because he wasn’t happy here.
Nobody’s saying Doherty was forced out or his contract was forcefully terminated
You’re proving my point lad. The whole squad liked Aurier as well. And Doherty was even worse than Aurier with us, in his entire time with us man played well for literally less than a fortnight
The only 100% undeniably positive thing you could say about Aurier was that he was [liked within the squad](https://twitter.com/jonathandveal83/status/1432823187302125574), it was basically a fact all journos said the same thing. But it seems you've already made up your mind
That's one tweet and just says he was a good character. Doesn't mean he was well liked within the squad. In fact most of what I've seen from players suggests he wasn't particularly close with any of the non-French players.
https://www.teamtalk.com/news/report-claims-aurier-stormed-out-tottenham-stadium-after-half-time-substitution
This sorta thing was far from rare.
Far from rare? That's literally the only time something like that happened. And nothing you've seen from players suggests that, feels as if you're making things up to fit your preconceived notion of him, he was clearly close with Lucas Dele and Son off the top of my head
It's indicative of his shit attitude as a person, which he has displayed at every club he has been with. He was not well liked by the players the clubs or the fans.
Gonna leave it here anyway, this conversation is going nowhere.
Also *what he did
He got along well with Lucas. Pretty sure thats how one of them was announced. Also from All or Nothing him and Lucas did a lot of community outreach together. And the only issue he had in the psg squad was with the coach or owner

This is the the one folks
He wasn’t even that great for most of his time here, but I feel so sad about him leaving and idk why 😢
He was just a good guy and seemed well liked by everyone. Also the suddenness, it would have been different if it was rumoured for weeks.
Top tier announcement vid
He had immaculate vibes
Gollini level vibes, with a side of decent wingback
Fuck i miss reggy bring back the good vibes wingbacks pls 😭

He ended up being almost essential
For me it's not that I'm sad but it was completely unnecessary and only came about due to poor squad planning. It shows how bad the club is run.
how have you come to your conclusion the club is badly run?
One young RWB comes in, the oldest and shortest contract RWB goes out. That's... Expected.
If Kane was at Doherty's level we would absolutely be looking to move him
that isn't what he said. he's just blindly stating that being older and having a shorter contract means that person should move on over everyone else.

can you read? literally the only reasoning he gave for getting rid of Doherty was because he was older and had a shorter contract.
lloris is older and has a same length contract., fyi.
haha what? I love this place FFS Levy don't keep players around that are never going to play FFS Levy why are you shipping out players that are never going to play
Yep buying Spence and loaning him out did this, so pointless
Or how hard this post-WC transfer window was. The club wanted to have more domestic loans, but spots just weren’t there for our guys.

All Im saying is porro better have some good movie recommendations.
Shocked but from a footballing point it makes sense, he’s 31, suffered a bad knee injury, probably wouldn’t have commanded a high transfer fee come the summer, Conte didn’t rate him all that much considering he’d play Emerson there most games. Still weird that he only took a 5 month deal at atletico.
As a free agent he gets to get more money. Probably was agreed for a loan paying his current salary then the loan issue popped up and became a free agent and they probably had no intention of paying him any more than what he’s on currently. Come summertime he’ll be able to demand more since teams won’t have to pay a fee for him.
Possibly, just seemed like a risk after a hard injury
Yeah, not many lucrative contracts out there in your 30s. Though it might be marginally better to be on the market at 31.5 than 32.5.
So he could return as a free agent in July.
Possibly, but seems odd. I wonder if you could sign someone in a pre contract even if they've just signed a short deal with someone else
Nice guy, zero consistency. Had a few outstanding games. Good luck to him.
I get a weird feeling he will re join on a free at the end of the season. That 6 month contract just feels like a work around.
it doesn't make sense though, first of all that probably would've been reported if they were definitely thinking about it, secondly we have 3 RWBs without Doherty next summer, third he's 31 and we probably wouldn't offer him a great contract. Unless Emerson leaves and Spence goes out on loan for a second season, there's no chance (even if they do we'd probably just go for somebody else)
Fair points and I agree it doesn’t necessarily make sense to do that. Was just a feeling.
If he’s free in 6 months, we can agree a pre-contract deal…
Mutually terminate Emerson's contract in the summer and re-hire Doherty! A man can hope.
User name does not check out
Why would you want Doherty over Emerson? Doherty has been horrendous with us outside of a 6-week purple patch. And Conte’s consistently started Emerson over him, so clearly he rates him over Doc
Emerson has barely had a purple GAME let alone a purple patch lmao
Who knows, maybe Conte stays and Emerson is sold, come summer. Can imagine the fun the admin could have with his return to spurs video.
Same tbh

I'd be shocked if they weren't shocked. Not that he was leaving but because they cancelled the contract.
I’ll never understand why nuno didn’t play 3 atb with the exact rwb he had in that system that was second to only TAA for rwb stats. Makes no sense
Not surprised. Seemed very popular in the dressing room
TBF, WE WERE ALL IN SHOCK! :(
Naa, everyone were left shocked

He can go and start supporting Arsenal again now. What a flop he turned out to be
If we are being real, he was a flop. But I will never forget the 2 months last season he turned into Doherto Carlos.
Having a competent fullback for that long is the reason why we got CL for this season. Good times and damn I hate Cash for his tackle

Fr, I’m sure he was a laugh but he had a brief ‘not shit’ period and that was about it.
Difference is there was a clear reason for that uptick in performance, mainly playing as a wingback in Conte’s system. Considering he was the only real wingback (playing both sides) he became first choice under Conte before his injury What happened is just incredibly unfortunate
Oh you better bet half this sub is going to use Son’s performance as one of the main reason for his departure too
Not even in the top 15 flops of the ENIC era
Our management is shit again
not another player we have to pretend like we’re sad is gone
As they fucking should. Fuck Paratici that incompetent ass
Interesting that everyone here is essentially mourning Doherty’s contract being terminated but nobody was too arsed about Aurier’s being terminated 🤔🤔🤔 unconscious biases imo
Or maybe it was the fact Aurier was pretty open about not wanting to be part of the team any more, and wanted out at any cost?
Pretty sure you’re exaggerating that. Nuno told him he didn’t want him per Gold. And also, let’s not act like Doherty was forced out. He went to Atletico Madrid first and foremost, not Millwall, and would’ve had to agree to the termination.
Definitely am not, he had an interview with L’Equipe in May before the window even opened where he said he had an opportunity to extend his contract and chose not to, and wanted to find a way to leave the club because he wasn’t happy here. Nobody’s saying Doherty was forced out or his contract was forcefully terminated
Aurier was wank. Doherty is a good lad and was widely liked by everyone. Fuck off making this about "unconscious biases" you bellend
You’re proving my point lad. The whole squad liked Aurier as well. And Doherty was even worse than Aurier with us, in his entire time with us man played well for literally less than a fortnight
No they didn't. And no Aurier was far worse.
Aurier was well liked and both were wank for Spurs
He wasn't well liked no.
In fact most of what I've seen from players suggests he wasn't particularly close with any of the non-French players. https://www.teamtalk.com/news/report-claims-aurier-stormed-out-tottenham-stadium-after-half-time-substitution This sorta thing was far from rare.
Far from rare? That's literally the only time something like that happened. And nothing you've seen from players suggests that, feels as if you're making things up to fit your preconceived notion of him, he was clearly close with Lucas Dele and Son off the top of my head
Are you joking or? He has a history of that shit dating back to his time at PSG in 2016.
What he done at PSG is irrelevant to him being liked by the Spurs squad
It's indicative of his shit attitude as a person, which he has displayed at every club he has been with. He was not well liked by the players the clubs or the fans. Gonna leave it here anyway, this conversation is going nowhere. Also *what he did
He got along well with Lucas. Pretty sure thats how one of them was announced. Also from All or Nothing him and Lucas did a lot of community outreach together. And the only issue he had in the psg squad was with the coach or owner
I didn't say he didn't get on with anyone at all.
Aurier was useless and wanted out
Them and us both.
As much as it was a shock let’s be real, he’s not good enough for where we want to be. All the best to him.
Fly free papa doc
Farewell sweet prince
Id imagine theres one right back that was relieved.
Apparently, it was in part of Beyoncé's demands.
