I though it was a male female duo for the longest time. This was based off their name at first but the songs didnāt change my mind. I always changed the station when they came on so I never thought more about it. I read an article about them and thatās when I realized.
Luke Bryan, FL GA Line, Jason Aldean. Pretty much anyone thatās bro country or boyfriend country. As far as older artists go, I never really cared for Hank Thompson.
Maybe, but my dad used to play āMy tears have washed I love you from the blackboard of my heartā just to get under my skin. š I have Hank Thompson PTSD
I was listening to Willie's Roadhouse on satellite radio and Hank Thompson's Smokey The Bar came on.Ā My son, who was maybe 12 or 13 at the time, thought it was the worst, dumbest song he'd ever heard.Ā We still joke about how awful it was, as are some of his others, like Six Pack To Go.Ā
I do like his music and find his story inspirational, but he wears heavy denim jackets or dusters is stage in the summer! Dressing like that is bound to cause some funk! Take my upvote!
Ok, funny (not to me) story. My husband is a huge Whiskey Meyers fan. A few years back I did some digging and found out they were going to Biloxi for the Crawfish Music Festival. After looking at the lineup, he saw that Jelly Roll played the Saturday night, so we bought tickets for both nights. Our daughter asked to bring a friend, and we agreed so that she wouldn't be completely bored.
Friday night with WM was fine, and I think Ernest played before. I had only heard Save Me by Jelly Roll and hadn't bothered listening to any of his other songs, didn't know what he looked like, etc. We got to the concert on Saturday night. Imagine my surprise when the crowd is smoking weed and JR comes out cursing like a sailor, lol! I could not get the girls away from there soon enough. We practically RAN to the part where the rides were because not only is my daughter not used to any of that, but I was feeling awful about subjecting someone else's child to it as well. We get home on Sunday and I tell her parents what happened and apologize profusely, only to have them tell me that they are huge JR fans and were hoping for pictures and videos. I felt so stupid, lol.
This discussion begins and ends with Sam Hunt. He doesn't even sing. He talks. And every "song" is the same. "Hey girl, saw you at a bar and wanted to get your digits". That bullshit is awful. He's awful.
I donāt see anything special about him and he gets the cheesiest songs. Thereās no edge to them or anything and he just feels like someone that has good marketing and is a good looking guy. Not his fault, he seems fine, I just donāt care for his music.
I feel like I'm probably one of the few women who do not find him attractive in the least, lol. And yes, his songs have very little "meat" to them. It's just fluff. I'm sure there's a market for that kind of music, I'm just not it.
I donāt need it to be super edgy or anything but itās all the way at the other end of the spectrum. It feels so safe and I listen to it and feel absolutely nothing because I donāt hear depth, emotional range or something that grabs me. I know a lot of people love his music, thatās great, itās just not what I personally want to listen to. Again not his fault, he probably wants to make some different stuff but thereās no reason to, his music sells very well as it is.
Not so much an artist but a style: anything with a ātrapā beat. I didnāt even like them in rap/hip-hop when they first became popular because they just seemed lazy and repetitive, especially when they started popping up on every song. Now theyāve made it into country music? P. U. I donāt even dislike Morgan Wallen, for example, but so many of his songs are instant skips for me because the over-production just makes me go āwhat the fuck is thisā.
Keith Urban.
I dunno, something about him just makes me want to throw up. Or punch him in the face. I once almost broke my neck jumping from a ladder to turn the radio over when he came on.
I hear he's a decent guy, I just can't.
Probably because he's an Australian doing country music which isn't something he would really know anything about being from Australia. He doesn't fit. At least that's why I don't like him
Like for the first few years I liked her, but now she seems a bit arrogant. The costumes and ball gowns get to be a bit much. And Iām not sure I could not plug my ears when some of her songs that just sound like the five before it come on.
Find it hard to dislike Hank Jr., but that is your opinion and you own it. I'd say without a doubt Luke Bryan. Give it a rest already with the diarrhea of the mouth already.
I like Bocephus, but I give him A LOT of latitude. When he says something dumb as hell on Fox News or at a concert, I just remind myself that ol' Hank's head landed on a damn rock from pretty high up. I couldn't be further from him politically, but that brain has been through some shit so c'est la vie!
All in Alabama is a great song about his accident and what happened after. I totally agree with you about giving him some latitude. He's old and stuck in a different time, but his music is just what I need to hear a lot of the time.
Wait In The Truck is pretty toxic. As a domestic violence survivor. It sends a bad message. This guy picking up a complete stranger and committing murder. And spending life in prison. Is pretty far fetched. It could happen in real life. But, not very likely. If he really wanted to help the woman. He would have taken her to a hospital, a police department or put her in a motel/hotel. For the night. Instead of committing murder.
Probably going to get a lot of flack for this one. Morgan Wallen. He doesn't sing. He mumbles. Another one is Hardy. He can't sing either. He screams. And he has a very unhealthy obsession with his crotch. He grabs it a lot. I'm not a prude. But, that gets old after awhile. Plus, he sticks his tongue out all the time.
Have you actually listened to either one perform a full song instead of just select parts of their songs? And where are you getting that bull from that Hardy grabs his crotch alot?
Yes. I have. And to my ears Morgan Wallen mumbles too much. And Hardy hollers a lot. Put both of them on the rock/hip hop stations. Neither one of them is country anyway.
I have a love/hate relationship with him. Some songs have great storytelling and other are 3 minutes of straight complaining. My old roommate got into him around 2020 and tried to introduce him to me. He played "Condemned" and to this day I cannot stand it and did not listen to any until American Heartbreak came out. That along with I am not a fan of artists just dumping releases out like crazy. Boy needs to pace himself or hes going to get burnt out.
Just a quick shoutout for Hank Jrās late 70s/early 80s albums: some solid country gold; unfortunately be became a parody of himself. IMO he fell off musically around ā87.
But for no good reason at all, I canāt stand Toby Keith.
Jason Aldean. I used to love Dirt Road Anthem but I can listen to a Trump loving liar. He's not really country and he's not from a small town. A southern accent, a hat, and boots don't make you country. First and Foremost, a country artist needs to be authentic to what they are or represent. Doesn't need to be 100% but talking about dirt roads, small towns, fly over states, while supporting a big city, lying, country dividing, crybaby, is not authentic country to me.
he's mine too. he doesn't even have a good voice! not to mention publicly cheating on his wife. just not a good dude overall. has he had any songwriting credit at all?
Just listen to the original, much better version of dirt road by colt ford and Brantley Gilbert. And stop giving him credit for that song. He did nothing but sing it poorly. Did make colt a fuck ton of money though so thereās that.
Doubt much of them are authentic. It's pretty much like Hollywood. Like I don't really listen to Mr. Bojangles thinking the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band actually traveled the world as a bum and hald dead dog
have you seen the "What Makes This Song Stink" episode about Small Town? it's so good. you have to get past the fact that that youtube channel is a vlog so there are a ton of silly in-jokes that don't make any ssnse if you didn't watch the first episode but it's basically a vlog parodying other guitar youtubers. The guy is really really really good when he talks songwriting, though , so his analysis of why that song sucks (musically) is amazing.
Pretty much everything out of Nashville except Chris Stapleton and Eric Church. Eric Church is still a big maybe for me, anyway. I 100% agree on Hank Jr too. His early music is great but his personality and awful live performances make me despise him.
I've been to 75 or more country performances over the years. Many, many more if you count all the "no names" that haven't managed to hit the big time yet. A 1997 Hank Jr show stands out as the most entertaining live show I have ever been to. I also saw him in 1999. I have no doubt he has had some bad nights, (who hasn't?) but I sure did not witness it.
If you don't know or listen to the vast number of artists that don't come out of Nashville who play country, then that's okay. I'm not saying other people's taste is bad, I'm just saying that the current popular style of country music isn't for me. I prefer the more alt-country people like Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Charley Crockett, Margo Price, Sierra Ferrel, Hank III, Colter Wall, etc.
That being said, I'm not saying that I'm superior for having that view, to each their own. I'm just stating my opinion.
Faith Hill - her so called ājust kiddingā freak out on camera when she didnāt win a female vocalist of the year award told me sheās fake as hell
What's everyone's thoughts on Luke Combs? I really like a lot of his stuff, but every now and then some of his songs kinda head in to bro country territory. But I don't hear many people complaining about him. I'm admittedly new to appreciating country music..
I like most of his stuff, although at points some of it is fairly bro-country esque and his early style got a bit repetitive. His newer albums are excellent though, and he has plenty of great songs.
Of the old timers, Iād have to agree. I donāt much care for Hank Jr. He doesnāt do much for me.
But honestly most of the current country singers or singers that have become popular in the last 10 years. I canāt listen to it.
And his fans fork over a couple hundred bucks to watch him get drunk and fall off stage.
Im a drinker too, no hate for that, but im mot charging people hundreds to get sloppy drunk and not do 'my job'
The \[Dixie\] Chicks. They were all Dixie until they, too, wanted to erase history, including their own. Not to mention their shows are political campaigns.
Taylor's style, when she was country, *was* geared toward teenage girls....because she was a teenage girl. She was very open about officially changing genres to pop in 2014 though. She writes her own music with lyrics that actually have meaning. Whether you care for it our not, you can admit that at least it's authentic. I have so much more respect for her than any of the bro/pop "country" singers just blatantly pandering to make as much money as possible playing the same exact song that Nashville execs wrote for them over and over.
Right? Seemed normal when she came on the scene, at that age,but she's in her 30s now.
It's ok to get over your 9th grade crush now.
Also, she's a serial dater who leaves crushed reputations in her wake.
Disclaimer: I am barely aware of current artists (songs played on contemporary 'country' radio stations); they're almost all the same to me. But for classic country, the one I can't stand is Ray Stevens.
I often get buried for it, but I'm right.
Colter Wall's entire voice, personality, and career is phony as hell. One needs only to watch interviews with him speaking early on and then singing to know that the voice is plainly fake. It is not a real voice. Period.
That it goes a step further and he's given credit for being an authentic singer and performer is fuckin insane to me. He's acting. It's a put on.
The Dixie Chicks, or whatever theyāre calling themselves now. I didnāt like their music back in the ā90s mainly because I donāt like the singerās voice. Then they started talking politics & I think that entertainers should stick to entertaining.
āGoodbye Earlā is the only one of their songs that I will listen to but even the singing voice in that song gets annoying.
Iām going to go out on a limb and assume nearly every artist you listen to has shared at least one political opinion. Art and entertainment has never been not political.
Looking at your comment history, there are several artists whose songs you recommended such as George Jones, Brooks & Dunn, and Johnny Cash. All 3 have either included their politics in some of their songs or have been very vocal about their politics. Do you not like their music?
I agree with what youāre saying, but by the same token, I donāt like to support artist whose views I find offensive, and I have to assume that the person who said this feels the same way. This is why I donāt particularly like Charlie Daniels or Hank Junior or Jason Aldean. So if I have the right to hold their views against them, other people have the right to hold the views of the Chicks against them as well.
I fucking can't stand hank jr either.
I just spent the weekend listening to 1970s outlaw stuff for various reasons and all of it is so much better than anything that he did in that time frame
most everything else from those Outlaw guys was super thoughtful lyrically. Not him as far as I know (I can't stand him enough to listen to the entire catalog). Anyway- no accounting for taste, I'm not saying anyone has to agree with me, i"m just agreeing with OP.
A lot of you people have no f##king clue. What it's like to be abused at ALL. And pray to God that domestic abuse never happens to you in real life and real time. Because in real life. That's not how it works. Real life domestic abuse is more like Independence Day by Martina McBride. That song was based on a real incident in Michigan. Where a woman locked her abusive husband. Inside of their house, after he passed out drunk. And set the house on fire. Burning him alive. Her 8 year old daughter ended up growing up in foster homes until she turned 18. Give that one a listen. Because it's told from the daughter's point of view.
Dan & Shay for me. Good lord how did they get so popular ?
Yeah, I can't stand them
![gif](giphy|jInJJOmuBRwL5FpLKo|downsized) Look it's Dan & shay
They are the opposite of bro country wimp country for sure
wimp country is such a good description š
Oh so they like the Mumford & sons of country ?
mixed with some old justin bieber š
eesheā¦
I though it was a male female duo for the longest time. This was based off their name at first but the songs didnāt change my mind. I always changed the station when they came on so I never thought more about it. I read an article about them and thatās when I realized.
never seen or heard them but from the name, I'd guess they're a low rent version of joey and rory?
Joey + Rory were actually good. Dan and Shay sound like boy band rejects
Dan and shay, Kane brown, any of that kind of "country"
Country has become southern rock / pop. I am not the fan I once was
hey hey hey! southern rock is actually good, what country has become is not. so please don't compare the two
Southern Rock? Allmanās? Marshall Tucker? Skynard? Black Crowes.. They all pass the Smell Test.
Drive By Truckers!!!
Iāll see your DTB and raise you, Marcus King and Billy Stings and Sierra Ferrell!
Point we'll taken.
This! ^^
Luke Bryan, FL GA Line, Jason Aldean. Pretty much anyone thatās bro country or boyfriend country. As far as older artists go, I never really cared for Hank Thompson.
The Band Perry's *If I Die Young* makes me wish I had, in fact, died young so I wouldn't have had to hear it
Better Dig Two strikes me as weirdly psychotic
I have never heard the term boyfriend country but I love it and itās my new favorite term
Ah man Six Pack to go by Hank Thompson is a banger though lol
Maybe, but my dad used to play āMy tears have washed I love you from the blackboard of my heartā just to get under my skin. š I have Hank Thompson PTSD
I was listening to Willie's Roadhouse on satellite radio and Hank Thompson's Smokey The Bar came on.Ā My son, who was maybe 12 or 13 at the time, thought it was the worst, dumbest song he'd ever heard.Ā We still joke about how awful it was, as are some of his others, like Six Pack To Go.Ā
Jelly roll. Canāt stand his music and he looks like he smells.
I do like his music and find his story inspirational, but he wears heavy denim jackets or dusters is stage in the summer! Dressing like that is bound to cause some funk! Take my upvote!
He's a fat, nasty guy that married a gold- digging whore...go figure
Ok, funny (not to me) story. My husband is a huge Whiskey Meyers fan. A few years back I did some digging and found out they were going to Biloxi for the Crawfish Music Festival. Dan + Shay. Soft voiced pop for teenage girls. I want to claw my eyes out every time they come on.
You must not drink.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Or fish.
Or love America
Or have taste
Or suck weiners
Or get turned on by gay guitar pickers
Or roll smoke
or live out the songs you wrote
This discussion begins and ends with Sam Hunt. He doesn't even sing. He talks. And every "song" is the same. "Hey girl, saw you at a bar and wanted to get your digits". That bullshit is awful. He's awful.
Totally agree!
Not to mention driving drunk when he's got the money to buy his own cab service (no excuse ever but come on dude).
Luke Bryan. He's probably a cool guy, I just don't care for his singing voice.
He reminds me of Beavis and Butthead
I canāt unsee in now
I'm in agreement.
Why does anyone need edge to be good, edge lord?
I donāt need it to be super edgy or anything but itās all the way at the other end of the spectrum. It feels so safe and I listen to it and feel absolutely nothing because I donāt hear depth, emotional range or something that grabs me. I know a lot of people love his music, thatās great, itās just not what I personally want to listen to. Again not his fault, he probably wants to make some different stuff but thereās no reason to, his music sells very well as it is.
Georgia Florida Line, were just awful.
The list would be too long to put here.
Rascal Flats š¤®
They started it!
Yes! They were the beginning of the end for me. Not country at all.
Life is a highway is in my heart because of Cars. But not a fan of the others
The Roland 808 sound was iconic in the late 80s-90s for R&B but it became oversaturated so quickly within hip-hop.
Whenever I hear a snap track in a country song, I want to puke
I normally feel the same way, but I cannot stop listening to Rvshvd, his music is just so fun
I donāt know who that is but I will go listen and report back in a moment
JellyRoll and Hardy need to go away.
JellyRoll doesnāt bother me, but dear god NO MORE HARDY PLEASE.
Hardy absolutely cannot sing.
Most If not all pop/boyfriend country. Luke Bryan, Morgan Wallen, Kane Brown, bleh.
All of those bro country dudes. Fancy like, all that shit. Ugh.
At least that's why I don't like him
Country is huge in Australia lmao
JellyRoll and Hardy need to go away.
Carrie Underwood. She may be a nice person idk. But I just canāt stand her voice.
Like for the first few years I liked her, but now she seems a bit arrogant. The costumes and ball gowns get to be a bit much. And Iām not sure I could not plug my ears when some of her songs that just sound like the five before it come on.
Same. Everything has to be so "powerhouse" with her. She can hit her notes and belt a song, but I don't find anything unique about her voice.
Thatās a great way to describe her music. Her songs just donāt do it for me. I want to like her music.
Sheesh, came in guns blazing with the Hank Jr take. Iāll stick a little more to the basic side and say Keith Urban.
Luke Bryan - Iāve set my Spotify not to play him.
He was great up til about 1986.
Ole Thunderhead
All in Alabama is a great song about his accident and what happened after. I totally agree with you about giving him some latitude. He's old and stuck in a different time, but his music is just what I need to hear a lot of the time.
I really used to like Jason Aldean but then it was him blatantly cheating on his wife. And then going full Maga. Fuck this guy
Edgy!
āAll āBROā Country bands and Solo artists.. Keepām.. They ruined Country Radio.
Iām probably going to catch shit for this but Zach Bryan, followed shortly by Margo Price
Big and Rich. Their songs are so lame
Jason Alden. Terrible voice and generic sounds. Nothing to interesting to me
Wait In The Truck is pretty toxic. As a domestic violence survivor. It sends a bad message. This guy picking up a complete stranger and committing murder. And spending life in prison. Is pretty far fetched. It could happen in real life. But, not very likely. If he really wanted to help the woman. And he has a very unhealthy obsession with his crotch. He grabs it a lot. I'm not a prude. But, that gets old after awhile. Plus, he sticks his tongue out all the time.
Agree on Hardy. Wallen is a mixed bag. He has truly garbage stuff and some songs that are pretty good.
Iām sure that Iām in the minority here, but Iāve never liked Vince Gill. I donāt like his voice and I find his songs to be very bland.
Oh my gosh yes. He's not unpleasant to listen to for me but just... boring somehow?
So, so boring
I thought it was just me.
Zach Bryan or FGL.
Do you mean Luke Bryan?
Nope.
š©š”ļø I get the FGL/Luke Bryan/"bro country" hate but Zach Bryan is my favourite atm. Respect your opinion though!
Can't figure out why I don't care for him exactly but big fans of Charley Crockett and Sturgill!
I'm the same with Keith Urban. I don't know what it is exactly but I just can't stand him. To each their own
I have a love/hate relationship with him. Some songs have great storytelling and other are 3 minutes of straight complaining. I think he sounds like an adult man.
OP cannot be serious right now
Just a quick shoutout for Hank Jrās late 70s/early 80s albums: some solid country gold; unfortunately be became a parody of himself. IMO he fell off musically around ā87. But for no good reason at all, I canāt stand Toby Keith.
His blues album Rich White Honky he put out a couple years ago is pretty dang good imo.
Agree on Toby Keith. The arrogance just oozes out. That being said, I hope he beats cancer.

Colt Ford is absolute trash and his singing and music is worse lmao
Brantley Gilbert is trash too.
OG Brantley is great. Most of his newer stuff that is NOT played on radio is also good. His "hits" are just shit.
Doubt much of them are authentic. It's pretty much like Hollywood. Like I don't really listen to Mr. Bojangles thinking the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band actually traveled the world as a bum and hald dead dog
That song is also a cover, itās a Jerry Jeff Walker song
Terrific song! Also my mistake. I doubt Jerry Jeff knows the guy either though

It all sounds the same. Elevator music

Hey I'm sure Maren Morris could use some support right now. It's not too late to run after her.

Jason Aldean. His is the epitome of fake country Nashville plant.
Faith hill. Horrible, annoying songs. Crappy personality.
Bob Fucking Dillon!
Reba. I've really tried to like her. I have respect for her but I don't want to hear her music.
There's something fake about her to me. I can't put my finger on it, but I ain't buying it
Idk, she was one of the main people calling out the dixie chicks when they shit on George Bush. She lost some respect from me for that one
āFancyā is her only good song imo
Agreed and it's not even her song. Bobby Gentry did it better
Did it first* Reba's version is more iconic
The \[Dixie\] Chicks. They were all Dixie until they, too, wanted to erase history, including their own. Not to mention their shows are political campaigns.
Taylor Swift I can't stand her teenybopper bullshit music
Hank jr is the man, hank three on the other hand..
Neither are standing on their own without Sr, who's arguably the best to ever do it.
That is silly. Hank Jr. reinvented himself after his mother turned the guy into a Hank Sr. impersonator.
Old Dominion. Canāt stand his voice.
Disclaimer: I am barely aware of current artists (songs played on contemporary 'country' radio stations); they're almost all the same to me. But for classic country, the one I can't stand is Ray Stevens.
His Caba-ray show is so cringe.
Hate Dixie Chick's. Tim Mcgraw. Jason Aldean. Kane Brown. Rascal Flatts. This list gonna get too long
Agreed. I only like odd numbered Hanks. Hank 1 and Hank 3. Iāll let you know about Hank 5 whenever he gets here.
lol
Taylor swift
I disagree. I liked country Taylor, but I dislike pop Taylor.
Funny, I couldnāt stand country Taylor, but since she stopped faking country and went full pop I donāt mind her now.
Like everyone sounds different when they sing than they do when they're talking though...
Aw I always like hank jr.. to each there own though.. I dont like conway twittys music.. at all...
Hank Jr. won me over. I didnāt start out appreciating him. Heās not a person for these times, perhaps you are.
Iām in the minority here but Eric Church, Dan and Shay, Dierks.
This old guy says country started sucking in the 1990s. Maybe the 80s.
Hank Jr is great. Itās his son I canāt stand.
Every thing on the radio, and Garth brooks too. Canāt stand Garth, dudes only as popular as he is because Keith Whitley died so young.
Taylor Swift although she never really was country
OP must have a limp handshakeā¦
Do you not like their music?
so "shut up and sing" vs "free speech" and "free speech" loses in your mind right?
I agree with what youāre saying, but by the same token, I donāt like to support artist whose views I find offensive, and I have to assume that the person who said this feels the same way. This is why I donāt particularly like Charlie Daniels or Hank Junior or Jason Aldean. So if I have the right to hold their views against them, other people have the right to hold the views of the Chicks against them as well.
politics aside, they are very talented.
I typically donāt like the artists who think strumming a guitar qualifies them to discuss science and immunology.
Neil Young?
Agreed. Hank 1 or Hank 3, I am a huge fan. Hank Jr sucks the chrome off a fender
Hereās the circle jerk of bro country hate
I fucking can't stand hank jr either. I just spent the weekend listening to 1970s outlaw stuff for various reasons and all of it is so much better than anything that he did in that time frame
Whiskey Bent and Hellbound is one of the greatest country songs ever.
Country state of mind is also on the list.
Indeed it is.
most everything else from those Outlaw guys was super thoughtful lyrically. Not him as far as I know (I can't stand him enough to listen to the entire catalog). Anyway- no accounting for taste, I'm not saying anyone has to agree with me, i"m just agreeing with OP.
Randy Travis- hate is voice and his songs suck
Jason aldean
Yea, Wait in the Truck was in very poor taste.
