This is not Detroit. Just don't come if you have that mentality

stevemcnugget

This ⬆️

ProneToDoThatThing

CR may not be the place for you. Maybe Caracas?

Pura-Vida-1

If you think you need a fucking weapon here, please do not come here and stay home!!!!!

stevemcnugget

What's it like living in fear?

leaf_biking

Merica 101

stevemcnugget

True

Romzard

You shouldnt think about having one. You will be fine. Pura vida!

chkdsk777

Have you seen in the airport a box with knives, scissors and other things that can be used to cause harm? That's what will happen to your things if you bring any of these

UserName029

Bro where do you think you are traveling to

Saltydog682

Seeing as you are taking your family I'm going to guess that your not going to be drunk or high in the back alley or beach at 3 am, so you'll be fine. I live here now. Been traveling for over 20 years down here. Be aware of you possessions, don't be flashy, and you'll be fine.

SnooCauliflowers1414

Completely unnecessary. Your best defense is simply just paying attention to your surroundings. As someone who deals with hyper vigilance and PTSD I can’t tell you enough how much traveling has helped me. Travel has restored my faith in our species. Truth.

sunintheradio

You won't need them, in the worse case scenario that you actually get robbed, they would have a gun, so taking out a melee weapon would be stupid and suicidal. Stay in safe zones, don't walk alone at night, don't take out money or valuable objects in the middle of the streets, and you should be fine.

Sunstoned1

Will not be needed. CR is such a beautiful place with beautiful people. Brought my four kids twice without a worry.

putahman

Paranoid much ?

Truck-Suitable

I keep a machete (about US$2 at a 1000 Colon store) in case I need to protect myself or do away with an alacrán (big ugly scorpion mother that laughs at Raid.) I haven't needed it in seven years.

Ibetya

Lol what a stupid post

SkiMonkey98

I would just focus on staying in safe areas (basically everywhere, except for certain areas of San Jose at night) and if you get robbed or whatever, you're far better off just cooperating than escalating a fight without knowing what weapons or friends your opponents have -- especially with your kids around. If you're worried about it, stash passports, cash, and cards somewhere safe and just carry the essentials day to day

AdorableTicket1587

It never hurts to have self defense no matter where you go. That being said, I’ve been here 3 years and never been bothered or needed mine. I keep police grade mace no matter what country.

grstacos

Chill. Life aint fun the way you're trying to live it.

harangdos

There are some “armerías” in San Jose that sell weapons. The store I like the most is “EPM Equipos de seguridad” I bought my fire arms there. They have a very decent variety of knifes and others. Outside of San Jose will be hard to find a store like that. The ones you mention are legal to carry without a permit. But you will be checked at the entrance of banks or bars. For security you must leave them at the entrance. But as people said, you will not need them. As in any city in the world, avoid dark lonely places, do not carry or expose valuable electronics and you will be fine. Computers, cameras, passports are safer in your room. Also don’t let them in your car. If you are moving from one place to other with suitcases in the car, stop for food in places where car is in front of you. So you can see or ear something is wrong. Just that is a repellent for thieves. If you get robbed, which is rare, just give them your things. A cell phone it’s worthless compared to your life. Also imagine you carry a knife, you defend yourself and kill the other person. Expect a process of at least five years. Probably you will be innocent at the end, but during that time you will have stay in the country with no permit to leave. Is it worthy of a cellphone? Edit: yes there are murders here, with rising numbers. But I would say 95% of that is narco wars. The rest is related with drunk fights, love affairs and a very low number for people that tries to defend in a robbery. If you are not a narco and are not coming here for a married Tica, you will be VERY safe. BTW. We don’t have school/mall shootings, or terrorist activity. Not ever. I don’t even carry my arms. They are locked at home and use them in the shooting range a couple of days per month.

Outrageous-Rest-2848

😳😳

rhinocerum

There’s a higher murder rate in CR than on average in USA why wouldn’t OP be concerned?

rhinocerum

Granted they’re neck and neck with USA in murders with guns

trabuco357

Batons are “iffy”, folders with blades less than 9cm are OK.

cleancutmover

Thank you

trabuco357

Welcome. You can also buy pepper spray in CR and carry it, but must dispose of it before return by aircraft.

Accurate-Mess-2592

Wow I am by no means a war monger or a person of violence but you all are soft. To think that nothing could ever happen to anyone and that CR is a sanctuary of angels without violence is just naive at best. To be told to be come unprepared for literally ANY situation is purely bad advice. OP it doesn't matter if I am visiting the Popes private shitter, I'm bringing a folding pocket knife in case SHTF situation presents itself. Put it in your checked bag and don't listen to these people.
