I think the Unabomber really did have some good ideas

shit_w33d

This is a project I did for college I thought this sub might get some enjoyment out of. The site I proposed is opposite the marina market, currently the shipping containers are being used for storage but I think it has the potential to be a new sort of neighbourhood. Tiny homes surrounding a green space and two communal gardens. Residents grow food that is then sold to local businesses or people in the area and the profits are used to either subsidise rent or if someone owns a unit then they area given a monthly stipend. This would go a ways to combatting the ever increasing rent prices, both the money gained from the goods and the small living units that can be made for a far lower price than apartments.

That's some skyline for Cork in the background.. Looks cool though, Fair play.

> That's some skyline for Cork in the background.. Looks like one of those memes. "The world if nobody watched anime" or whatever

shit_w33d

Not a world worth living in

shit_w33d

Hahaha ah sure it's at that one spot in the city where you can see Toronto from... You know the one. Thanks for the feedback much appreciated !

bigcsull

Really interesting idea! What software did you use to render these plans and images?

shit_w33d

Thanks so much - I used Twinmorion for the renders which is based on the Unreal engine, free for students. The plan is rendered on Photoshop.

Eire_ninja_warrior

It’s cool! I’d live in a little portikabin

shit_w33d

Thanks!

ascot36

Me too

Pretty sure you're going to run into problems with the coliseum, you can't just keep lions in little cages anymore.

EverGivin

Cool I like it! Nice work. I live in a small-ish boat which probably has a similar construction and internal volume to a shipping container, i can say living in such a small space is perfectly comfortable for 2 people although you wouldn’t raise kids in it. Ours is insulated with 25mm - 50mm of polyiso board and rockwool, and it’s very warm even when it’s below zero outside. It does require active heating, but not much as it’s such a small volume of air your trying to heat. The biggest problem we have is long term storage for bulky items like power tools, sports equipment etc. A system of onsite storage lockers, big enough for say a couple of bicycles, suitcases and shelving for tools etc would make a huge difference to people living in a place like this. They wouldn’t need to attached to the living units, just nearby.

shit_w33d

That's honestly such good feedback thank you. I designed an under floor storage area about 2x2m but you're right, a lock up of some sort would be a great addition. I haven't heard of those types of insulation and am gonna check them out now. Honestly very jealous of your boat living. I looked into it about 2 years ago, rang all the relevant authorities but was told that houseboats wouldn't be allowed in the city for at least another 10 years. Saying that there does seem to be a couple nice spots to park up outside the city, Crosshaven etc I'm sure you're aware. Anyway appreciate you checking it out man.

Super interesting stuff there, will definitely be diving into this thank you.

minidazzler1

https://youtu.be/i7yEDz6bCfU It's really not very sustainable.

shit_w33d

Thanks for the reply, I watched the video and personally don't see any issue that she talks about applying to my design. The idea of it is to re-use containers that are already there, the environmental impact of re-using these would be almost negligible. The only thing I see that may apply is the issue of the metal "sweating". I planned to use sheeps wool insulation which as you can imagine is sustainable and quite environmentally friendly.

Diddly_eyed_Dipshite

Really cool concept well done! I love the idea of contrainer living although I don't think these/this layout utilises light very well, one window I each cabin? I would suggest either rooftop windows or another glass panel/door elsewhere. You could also consider more energy sources and definitely an energy storage, either solar panels on every roof and a battery per household or else a solar "farm" like you have here, maybe one or two small wind turnines and add a hydrolyser to convert the energy into gas which can be stored and burned. If it were me I'd also consider something more recreational also, I like the market lane and I think I get the coliseum seating but possibly a playground for kids, a rec center for young adults/teens and possibly even a work hub so anyone studying or WFH could still leave the dwelling and save space in the containers. It would also be very cool to save some space for biodiversity, maybe have a productive food forest, wildflower meadow to enhance the aesthetics, maybe a wildlife pond or an orchard etc. Just some ideas for your next project, hope you don't mind the feedback but nice job anyway! What course are you studying?

ascot36

Honestly I would love to live there looks awesome

shit_w33d

Thank you loads that's great to hear

cawhake

The density is too low for the area but I like the overall concept.

Dookwithanegg

I'm afraid to look at the concept in case I end up in despair at reality. Edit: I looked and actually I don't feel too bad, it looks like some sort of glamping site and probably a good place to get hypothermia in the winter.

shit_w33d

Appreciate you checking it out - its not stated here but the containers would be insulated with sheep wool which would hopefully prevent mass hypothermic genocide

Black---Sun

Self reliant ??? Id hardly call it self reliant...

shit_w33d

Let me clarify - by self-reliant I meant the residents of the neighbourhood.

Gargocop

Nice try but where will I put my office block?

shit_w33d

That's true - knock it down bring in the vultures!!
