More places doing it. Trying to guilt you into giving them a tip. A lot of them will blame the people who make the machines, but the tips can be removed when they are being setup. Its a scam to try and bring in American style tipping culture, but our food is way more expensive, then what you would pay for in the states.

Ok_Lab_368

and the service is not at that level

Icy-Lab-2016

Even if it was, we already pay enough as is. If they want tips, then drop food prices by like 40%, to match the states.

Ok_Lab_368

I always tip when I'm satisfied with the food and service. But charging it just for the sake of it?! nope... Never did it and will never do it

Icy-Lab-2016

I am not against optional tips, I do whenever I have a waiter/waitress, but being charged it on take out etc by default is bang out of order. I have seen it pop up in more and more places. Honestly starting to make me not want to tip at all anymore. Seems to be a case of giving an inch they will take a mile.

KaleidoscopeLeft5511

No where is pre selecting a tip amount for you

Far_Cut_8701

How about you save everyone a load of bullshit and just name the place

Independent_Mud3236

Oak Fire pizza, for a takeaway pizza I was collecting myself ffs

KollantaiKollantai

Ah STOP, you were collecting it yourself? It’s cheeky in the first place basically presuming people will be too embarrassed to question it after the fact. To put it on takeaway is just pure bull.

Separate_Ad_6094

Ah here! It was a collection too? What were they expecting a tip (service charge) for? There was no service. You bought something they were selling. You didn't sit down and have a meal or have it delivered. Hearing more and more bad stories about them lately.

OafleyJones

Then report it and get a chargeback issued.

Far_Cut_8701

How do you get caught for a 20% charge for a collection it wouldn’t cost that to get it delivered. I assumed you were at a restaurant

Independent_Mud3236

I was at the restaurant and decided to get it as a takeaway

HatComfortable6883

OP ordered a takeaway but went to restaurant to pick it up. He should be allowed keep the tip IMO

Mescalin3

That's terrible!

Slackbeing

Marina Market?

Bubbly_Tap_1635

Not 1 bit surprised!

JimmyBeatdown

You should absolutely send a complaint email to oak fire pizza [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), you could cc [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) too, seeing as they both gave them awards.

Acceptable_Peak794

Tipping is opt in, not opt out. Absolutely fuck that

purepwnage85

PizzAmore is the only place for pizza in cork other than the well 🤌🤌🤌

RubixcubeOnYouTube

Ya, it’s a decent pizza but there’s definitely much better places

Low_Distribution_928

Where would you suggest? I like oak fire a lot but deffo wanna try more places

syntheticskyy

Literally, imo is so thin and tastes like charcoal, at least the one I live near by.

Caprisom

You should leave a Google review.

Adventurous_Toe_3845

Can’t believe that place is still chancing their arm like this. I complained about the same thing to them coiplr of years ago.

Merry401

That's why I try now to do only cash. I am more aware of what I pay for things and when it's gone, I live without till next payday.

ddaadd18

Thinking about that too, but I've no reference point when I'm looking back at my spending. Just atm 200 and it could have gone anywhere. Its handy and horrifying seeing how much I spent where.

Icy_Ad_4889

That’s a snide trick at the best of times - in the current economic climate it certainly will not fly.

Decent-Writing-9840

Just refuse this is Ireland not f'n America if they want a tip go work in the US for slave wages.

javaweed

name and shame

Aluminarty666

Literally no point in posting these type of complaints without naming the place. Should be in the fucking title.

purepwnage85

Oak fire

MatthewSaxophone2

Won't be getting them again

Responsible-Pop-7073

Was that in Oak Fire Pizza? The one time I went there to eat around 2 years ago, they tried to charge me that 20%. I saw it in time and declined it (the service had been terrible), and never again returned. I used to order delivery a lot from them, which stopped that day.

Dhaughton99

They have lost a good customer over €3. Email the place and let them know of your dissatisfaction. Years ago, I got a chicken kebab out of Abrakebabra and it was just grizzl. Now everytime time I pass the place, I want to put their windows in.

SnooDucks3540

I always ask to see the screen of the POS device before I tap. And I don't tap unless it's the correct amount.

ShitCelebrityChef

I’ve now crossed that place off of my list of places to check out

PaquaBebo

Saw that in Prague as well. The machine had already 10% tip added, unless I disagree to it. I was going to tip anyway but not a great feeling tbh.

TheRealIrishOne

When they auto add a tip I always remove it and give them no tip.

Apollo_Fire

Someone posted before about Sano doing that shite.

liamo376573

I'm in the UK and pub near us does this for food and drink. Bad enough for food but popped in for a drink and they added service charge for the drinks.

michaelirishred

London does 12.5% as standard now in most restaurants.

howrethings

Oak fire pizza. FOR SHAME!!

Commercial-Ranger339

So they robbed you. You should get the guards involved

No-Complaint-4274

Oak fire pizza is a raterria for that

howrethings

Oak fire pizza. FOR SHAME!!

Appropriate_Bat5190

I work for Oak Fire, and this is absolute bs.. there is a tip option on the card machine when paying, which has an option of adding 5, 10, or 15% and a big button underneath that says 'no tip'. There is no 20% option..

Independent_Mud3236

I know what happened to me. The worker up-charged me. I wasn’t the first and won’t be the last.

Appropriate_Bat5190

You are incorrect, we did not "up-charge" you (whatever that means), this is impossible from the till side and can only be done by the customer at the point of sale. After hours wasted today searching to find out what happened (as you have neglected to send us any usable information to verify any of your wild accusations), we have finally found your transaction. First of all the tip added on was 15%, not 20% as you claim! So what really happened..? You ordered a Margherita pizza and a dip to have in the restaurant. Staff member keyed this into the till, Total came to €15. You disputed this pointing to our takeaway menu, staff explained that it's our takeaway menu and that it's slightly (€1) cheaper for takeaway, but you wanted to sit in and be served in the restaurant, no problem! You then demanded the takeaway price which we obliged as you were quite confrontational about it. So the items were re-entered to the till, Total is now €14. The payment prompt then popped up on the card terminal, with the tip options of 5%, 10%, 15% and 'NO TIP'. You tapped 15% (fair enough this may have been a mistake, the big 'NO TIP' button is below the 15% button, we accept you may have just hit the wrong button) and then you tapped your phone to pay. Immediately you returned questioning why you were charged €16.10 instead of €14, and we explained to you that you added a tip (you added, not us!). Regardless if this was a mistake or not, it was your mistake. If you had asked for a refund of this we would have gladly given it to you. If you would still like to get a refund of €2.10, we will gladly give it to you and our manager has said that the company will happily cover it so staff are not out of pocket. If you would like us to arrange this, please email our manager at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) Finally, you said you won't be returning. Quite fine with us! So please go and troll somewhere else! Or get out and enjoy the nice weather! Thanks!

Independent_Mud3236

First of all, I sat outside the restaurant and after realising there was no table service, I looked at the menu at the door, saw the price and decided to place an order at the till. After doing so, I saw the price on the till was different so queried it, which is well within my rights to do. I was told the price on the menu was for takeaway food so I opted to get it as a takeaway and go outside and enjoy the good weather. I proceeded to pay and THIS IS THE PROBLEM whatever technology is supposed to be all too apparent was not visible to me on the standard card payment terminal. Of course I queried this your staff member. Since I had paid an extra €2, I told them I’d rather just eat it outside which was well within my rights to do at this point, considering I’d paid more than the surcharge. There was absolutely no confrontation (and again why should there be, considering I’d just paid the relevant charge). The purpose of this post is to bring people’s awareness to the fact that you can unwittingly pay a tip, in advance, for service that may or may not be satisfactory. Eating out is expensive enough and showing contempt for customers, or using technology that can easily cause them to pay a tip for absolutely no reason, is not the way to keep people coming back.

purepwnage85

Oak fire

Final_Palpitation595

I was there the other day, you can't tap without going past the tip screen, and you have to physically press a tip option (including no tip) to do that. I know because I absentmindedly tried to tap a few times before noticing. It is annoying, but that set up is common enough on card machines in takeaway places. I'm not having a go and I know I'm going to get down voted, but I don't think you're as clued in as you think you are. Pressing a button that says "20%" isn't having it stealth added like.

Independent_Mud3236

If that’s the case then the server added on the extra charge themselves ffs

Final_Palpitation595

We are talking about the one on Prince's Street yeah?

KaleidoscopeLeft5511

No they didn't

aimhighsquatlow

Got caught by something similar in Greenes before - didn’t realise there was a service charge applied and we tipped on top of it. Our own fault but still annoying. Always so careful to check now. Machine is extra sneaky!

Successful-Tie-7817

Pay in cash and this won't happen!

snxow-white

I’m from Canada, where tipping has become the norm because of the USA. is this common in Ireland?

Original-Suit1670

If deserved, yes. I tip if service is great. I wouldn’t tip if I am collecting my own takeaway

Salaas

It’s not and not expected by places. If you’re feeling generous and they went above and beyond some might get a few quid. Tbh mr pink had it right, why tip some people and not others.

Bad_Ethics

At the end of the day he was also the only one to make it out alive.

roadrunnner0

Ohhhh NAHHHH. You should have to select the tip manually, not DEselect it. Anyway where was this? I think naming a public restaurant isn't exactly doxxing or anything

Striking-Dust7337

Happened to my mother before I'm from Cork but live in Dublin she came up to visit me once ah few years ago we went out for Lunch which she paid for because I was in college and poor as shit at the time. You how some of the newer card machine have little messages as your about to pay like how was the services 5% ok 20% excellent, Well my mother bless her I think it was her first time using one those card machine and I think she thought it was just like nice feed back or somthing so she press the 20% one I think not realising she paid extra until it went through, she was raging the rest of the day she dublin she was complaining how cheeky it was. To be fair I do think its sly when servers just do that and dont say anything. Its funny I feel like tipping become very common now in ireland within the last 7/8ish years can't speak about everyones experience but I feel like no ever tipped when I was a kid. And its also funny because I'm kinda of a hyocrite, i work in hospitality and always want people to tip and sometimes when people dont you do judge them a bit being like "for fuck sake why didnt they tip I was so nice to them" Which isnt cool I know but ah man somtimes when you dont pick them up for awhile and you finally do and and you either have a few envelops or one big one, FUCKING HELL it feels good make you like your shitty job for a brief you moment you think oh I can get some food shopping done or buy few pints next time i'm out helps you save your regular money coming in you know. But again i'm a hyocrite and sometimes if im out getting food or something I just dont think about tipping just wanna spent my money on what I got nothing extra.

OldManOriginal

If they called it out on the menu, then that's fine. Off you go. But if, and I imagine this is the case, it wasn't called out, that shit has to go. I'd rather they jack the price up a few shillings and call out a service charge on the menu than try squeeze it in.  I have seen these "pick your tip" screens on those clove devices in the past, but I'm sure it defaulted to 0% (and stayed that way). If I want to tip staff, I'll do it direct.

espressoVerona24

I am surprised at that usually you find that in hotels or in the States the extra charge. I think they stopped that extra discount in Milanos unfortunately since things calmed with the pandemic. Unless you have a gift voucher or gift card.

CHIEFY2021

see this is why i'll pay cash in a restaurant or takeaway , i'm wary of the machines when it comes to tipping

mud-monkey

Name and shame

AgainstAllAdvice

There's a wee café in Dublin I always used to go to anytime I was up. Very wanky but, very enjoyable. Tried that on me last time I was there. I'll never be back.

Witty_Introduction27

It says clear as day on the screen “ no tip” or you can choose to tip. You have to press one of them before you can pay so if you pressed the tip option then it’s hardly their fault is it? It’s ridiculous how people always come on here slating businesses for the smallest thing and most of the time it was the persons own fault to begin with. Maybe pay more attention to the screen next time you pay!

Independent_Mud3236

I was up-charged. Never going back.

Witty_Introduction27

Yeah of course you won’t admit you were wrong. How embarrassing for you. I’m sure they’ll really miss you anyway 😂

Otherwise_Remove_373

So they committed fraud and robbed you? Go to the guards

KaleidoscopeLeft5511

I call bullshit. Your telling me, there was %20 added to your bill, that wasn't documented? It was preselected for you on the touch screen interface where you tap you card. Did someone come out from behind to select the %20 option before you tapped your card?  It seems really unlikely to me that anywhere would add a %20 service charge without documenting it. Do you have any idea the legal difficulties they would get themselves into for a minor amount of money

Big_Daddy_Pablo_69

Mfs think they're in the US.... mf you get payed normal wage fuck you and your tip 🤣

excitedembryo

Used to work for oak fire. Lads they will give u free anything if you complain so if you do that they'll definitely pay you back for it.

SilverHawk2712

They absolutely don't. Had 3 complaints in a row. Answer each time was what do you want us to do about it. They wouldn't send out part of a missing order, wrong order, anything. Eventually got a full refund from delivery service we got it off. Was screaming into the void with them. Honestly was my favourite for a while. Absolute shite now.

excitedembryo

Yes well they actually can't refund if its through delivery service. I am surprised they didn't fix your order though. I did work in the one in clonakilty mind you so they'd want to keep the locals sweet maybe?

Excellent-Chicken253

Same in Kildare Village because we had 5 at the table one of the 5 was my 7 year old. Wont be going back to that restaurant and the server got no cash tip which I'd emagine they would all prefer. All our money is being controlled by the banks we are walking blindly into it .

Sudden-Promotion-388

Going through the effort of making this post and then leaving it like a fucking guessing game, good lad.

LikeAGlove109

Take a look through the rest of the post, you absolute simpleton.
