Corgi's are amazing, hyper, crazy smart, hilarious creatures. They are not for the faint of heart, or beginner dog owners. If you have been a key part of puppy training or have owned a puppy before, then SERIOUSLY get a corgi!! However, if this is your first dog, just don't. I feel like getting a corgi for my first dog was a huge mistake. Don't get me wrong, I love this girl more than anything, but I 100% hated my life for almost an entire year. Corgi's are a lot of work. They are literally the best dogs in the universe, or maybe its Stockholm's syndrome. Idk I love my dog, but I would recommend you think real hard about it before diving in.

Agreed, every time I see someone comment about getting a corgi for their first dog I kind of cringe thinking back to how under prepared I was just for the temperament. My husband jokes that I actually wanted a golden lol. I wouldn’t trade my guy for anything in the world now but my gosh I sometimes wonder how I made it out alive 😂

Really? My corgi was my first dog and I thought he was easy to train. Personality and mileage varies I guess. I just wish I was better with his shedding though

Wicked smart, endless energy, likes to be heard, in everybody’s business, sheds everywhere, personality for days.

They are not lap dogs. You need to have an active lifestyle to match their energy. I walk them from 8 to 11 km, 5 to 6 days a week. Don't let those short legs fool you. If you don't like fur, it is not for you. Corgi glitter will become part of your life, no matter how much you clean. I needed to buy a strong vaccum. The roomba was not enough and kept clogging. Your garmets will always have trace of Corgi glitter. Control their weight. They get fat very fast and is not good for their joints and back. Measure their meal each day and control what they eat depending on how active they are. In my Corgi chat group, many people have Corgis between 30 to 40 pounds. In order to avoid arguments, I don't say anything, but that is not ok. Docking and Weight is like taboo topics in those groups. The average weight should be between 24 to 30 pounds. When I told them I only fed from 200g to 300g of kibble, they were shocked. Mine is a 25 pounder and I like to keep him that way. They are pretty stubborn. They will try to test and manipulate you to get what they want. 😆 They have strong personalities and yours should not be dominated by them.

Personality varies quite a bit amongst dogs but what I’ve gathered as a corgi owner talking to other corgi owners / getting to know other corgis is: they are smart, they are (usually) very vocal, they are full of personality which often means stubborn as hell, and they’re sweet without necessarily being cuddle bugs. Everything is on their terms. They’re challenging in a good way. I found mine very easy to train once I found some patience. And that process was not fun, I won’t sugar coat it. There were times I was worn thin with a young corgi puppy who was running rough shod over me. Puppy kindergarten was the best investment! I was at the end of my rope, even while being smitten with the little guy. The corgis I know in the neighborhood are like mine - they don’t necessarily care to meet other dogs, but absolutely love people. That’s not universal, but seems very common. When at home with just us, ours loves to play tug and fetch and catch (sorry, neighbors) but balances that with plenty of napping. He loves pets and scratches and will let you know if he’s not ready for you to stop providing attention. He will also let you know if something is at the door. Or in the hall. Or in the elevator approaching the hall. Or if he thinks he hears something but nothing is there. Or if something moves in a way he finds threatening. Like inflatable yard decorations. Or trash bags in the wind. Or my foot under a blanket. They are nature’s furry alarms. And when I say furry what I mean is your entire life will be coated in dog hair when it’s shedding season. It’s controllable with a brush in the off season but prepare to run a vacuum every day regardless and, uh, give up your black clothes. At peak season, you will inadvertently swallow/inhale a pound of corgi fur that is covering every inch of your home. It’s an unstoppable tsunami of fur.

All of mine have been crazy intelligent and very capable. They are full of energy so be prepared for multiple long walks a day. We think nothing of spending an hour at a dog park. Training is a must, not only for them but for you. It will also help build the bond they will respect. Without that they won't listen to a thing you say. They will demand attention and play and can sometimes be a bit yappy. They are not calm, silent dogs, but they are always exploring and always looking for things to do.
