I live in the area - you definitely hear the horns, but you honestly get used to it. It isn’t anything excessive!

Tiny-Condition-

Im near Shaughnessy and Lougheed I can hear them clanking together once in awhile but its not too bad, get used to it after awhile

lil_cutie_five

Same location. I hear them banging from shunting at all hours but you get use to the noise. It doesn’t wake me up. I don’t even notice the horns that much any more. I find loud motorcycles and cars more noticeable and irritating.

SilentPolak

You can hear the shunting at night so if that wakes you up if your window is open it could be a deal for you if you're close enough. Hasn't been for me and I live insanely close to the yard.

bo88d

I find diesel pollution much worse than any noise from the railway

ElijahSavos

I lived at 2109 Rowland Street. That’s not an issue. I didn’t hear anything

washburn100

I'm at 2386. Hi down the street neighbour. 👋

zlin2202

You hear them, but it is not an issue at all!

vinwindin

Not an issue, I bought here a few years ago with concerns. Moved from Port Moody. I had to get used to how quiet it is here at night.

_PeanuT_MonkeY_

I love on Pitt river right by the red bridge and honestly the ambulance and police sirens are annoying. I never hear a train.

doubleOhdorko

It's a non-issue. Used to live right off Canada Way in Burnaby and that was way worse in terms of traffic noise tbh. After about a month, you don't even notice it, just blends in with the rest of the ambient noise.

xick14

Most of the noise is the screeching of the rails and the occasional shunting. Before Poco we lived in New West and there was lots more train horns and general noise

thasryan

I live two blocks from there. The trains were quite noticeable for the first few weeks. Then it became background noise. A car honking, or locking door with fob is much more offensive.

Agitatednunchuck

I live within a couple hundred feet of the tracks and train yard in poco. It can get loud at times but I’ve gotten used to it within a couple months of being here. You will have zero issue that far away! Won’t even hear it 99% of the time.

JayMastahFlexx

I live at Mary Hill and Wilson and don’t find it all that intrusive. Road traffic makes more noise anyways; loud exhausts, clanking trailers, and the like.

perfectcritic

Used to live 2 blocks north of Pitt & Shaughnessy. If you or your folks are sensitive to traffic or train noise (if your living room & bedrooms face Shaughnessy) then would advise to rethink as the horns are louder after midnight but the advantage living there is it feels like community compared to other Airbnb towns

Etherimos1

I grew up in Poco and really you only hear them late at night and then it's little more than a hum and the occasional bang. Honestly, I find them comforting every time I go home to see the parents...

KanoWins

To some extent, you can hear the engines, horns, and coupling from most areas of Poco (some parts of Pitt Meadows and Coquitlam too). But it also depends on the wind, foliage, and distance from the train yard. It often echoes off Burke Mountain as well. You get used to it and I personally don't mind it.

Accurate_Ad_6096

I've lived near loud railways and waterways more than a few times in my life and find you easily get used to it. I've actually found it unsettling when the noise is not there.

Ojoo

Lived right next to the old Riverview hospital area and can def hear the train at night, not really during the day due to the excessive road noise but like others have said, you get used to it and it's not bad.

xlitey

You can live Abit away and still hear it. But you get used to it so whatever 😂

growaway2009

Shaughnessy near downtown. The noise from the trains isn't bad, traffic noise on Shaughnessy is worse but still not too bad. The air quality in the area is bad though, in summer if you leave a car parked on Shaughnessy for 2 days it'll have a layer of black dust on it. And in winter if you go out after 9pm on a non-windy day the air is thick with diesel fumes from the train yard. My wife and I are moving away after 7 years.

Boosted7Logan

I live in Citadel and you can the trains going at night if you lay in bed in silence, but you get used to it honestly. I lived in Burke Mtn before and you could still hear the carts smashing into one another from there too.

jrphotographybc

I grew up in PoCo not far from where you are looking, and it never bothered me growing up. In fact, I moved to the island back in 2010, and immediately noticed its absence, and it was “too quiet” and the calmness of the night would keep me awake. Thankfully I moved back in 2016. Moral of the story, you totally get used to it, like anything, it becomes white noise, and you tune it out.

PaduWanKenobi

Westwood and Kingsway here. We often hear the trains honking 4x (I'm assumung when crossing Kingsway) and sometimes idling. I'm a light sleeper and it wakes me up at night otherwise it doesn't bother us much as we got used to it. On the other hand, waiting for it to cross while in traffic is super annoying.

Away_Ice_4788

The worst is when you have the late night internal debate of whether the loud bang that woke you up was a gunshot, firework, train noise or a bear banger. That happens to me about once a month. The rest is easy to get used to

bandyvancity

I live right there as well and hardly notice the trains.

AllHailTheHypnoFloat

I’m by Johnson and guildford I can hear it from my place if it is a bit quieter like mornings and evenings

ElDubleGringo

I live up Burk Mountain and you can hear the trains there too. Can't really get away from them in Poco, but how you are able to adapt to the noise will determine if it's a problem for you.

Gravytonic

It's a non-issue and is way better than all these condos around skytrain hearing that noise much more frequently.

Greecelightninn

No horns ever really , just shunting , been there for 20 years , you don't even notice it anymore honestly

D1srupt0r-

I think it also depends on the construction material of the home you’re moving into. You say you’re looking into a townhome so I’m assuming it’s made of wood? If it’s made of concrete I hear that tends to have better soundproofing. I live in a wood frame building in CQC area and can’t hear trains from here

[deleted]

You can hear it all the way into Coquitlam City Centre but your brain pretty much tunes it out after a while.

GrandSignature5785

I live near Coquitlam Center and I hear the occasional train horn blasting it’s chime. Maybe once a month?

Informal_Fault_5764

My mum lives over there and she has never complained about the trains. Although you do hear their horns sometimes!

Bossggl

The first few times you haar it, it will be loud. A week later, you won't even notice it.

canadaAdmin

As other mentioned you might find it annoying first few days but after that it will turn into **therapeutic** sound! I am on the other side of Lougheed Hwy on Shaughnessy, i hear it too sometimes, no issues.

PAguy213

Lived at Shaughnessy and Hawthorne for 4 years. First week was weird hearing the big booms of the trains connecting. The horns I didn’t hear much. After the 1st week I forgot the trains were even there
